  • Guts and Griffith are very much two sides of the same coin in the Berserk manga. So what makes Guts a true hero compared to Griffith? Psychology... and something about slaying dragons.

Sure he got what he wanted, but at the cost of the only people in this world who could truly understand and accept him. @@petergraywolf5765 You... might wanna re-read the Eclipse my guy. And the events leading up to it. Cause that in my opinion is a complete misread of what was going on there. Casca didn't choose to be sacrificed to Griffith, she chose to stay with the band of the hawk and help Griffith heal, because as you know, the man couldnt even hold himself up or speak after his torture. And she couldn't bring herself to leave him behind and be happy with Guts like she was never loyal to him. What Griffith did was a betrayal of his men's loyalty and hope. They didn't have dreams of their own yes, but they wanted to live to see Griffith's dream and reap the benefits. And Griffith threw that loyalty away as soon as he saw that it was beneficial. Those are the actions of a sociopath. The only person to blame for the events of the Eclipse is Griffith. His literal words were "I sacrifice". His men didn't sign up to be killed and eaten by demons. Casca didn't want to be striped and violated repeatedly by both demons and Griffith. But Griffith brought that fate upon them the moment he decided their loyalty and passion for his dream meant nothing.

    I always felt Guts and Griffith represented how people would see their own egos if manifested. People who are fans of Guts are willing to deal with the harsh reality of being human, imperfect fragile and at times wrong. But capable of growing, maturing and being open to others. Than you have Griffith who is superficial, hollow and alone. But has power, influence and admiration. This show how fans and people can be divided in their most simplistic form on how they see themselves. I like both characters but it's Guts who a resonate more and criticized Griffith. The breaking point for fans to see which character they resonate more was the eclipse scene. Some fans became more on side with Guts while other pitty Griffith even though he made a choice to harm others for his own ambition.

    I've been thinkin about this. Basically whom Griffith considered as friend are those who are equal to him in the aspect of dream. These people must be able to livin their live in the name of dream, and must be able to pour themself to realize their dream, whatever the odds. Anything less than this is not his "equals". But Griffith never realized he already had such friend who are equal to him. Griffith maybe never noticed the real reason why he really wanted Guts in his army, or can never explained why he save Guts a number of times, even putting himself in danger for him. That's because Guts is already his equals in his subconscious.
    Guts mesmerized Griffith so much because he is living for the moment, pouring everything and every fiber of his being in his sword. Guts dream was never a grand one. He fight because he know nothing else, he explained this beautifully to Casca, in the Bonfire of Dreams chapter. He live and pour his existence to his sword, this is visible in his style of fighting. Guts did gamble his live to one single strike quite a few times, putting his life on the lines against Basuzo and Zod, thus earned his survival, by wager everything he had to the tip of his sword. Guts livin his life by his sword, one strike at a time. Griffith can never understand this as he live for the future, thus mesmerized by Guts.
    This is why Guts had no interest to court life, nobility or kingdom formality as he chooses to train his swordsmanship alone. He pays no heed to status, and while he respect Griffith, he never worships him. I think this is also why Griffith can only open his darkest scheme to Guts and believe him to get the job done, as opposed to Casca who only know some of his dark secret by accident. and when Griffith told Guts about Julius's assassination plan, he didn't order him, he request him, like a friend should. Because Guts, while he had no grand ambition to spoke of, is already living his life and dream to the fullest at that time even though he didn't know it, as opposed to Griffith that living for his dream in the future. Both of them are living their dream, yet they're completely different in their approach, thus makes them "equal" by Griffith standard. Thats why Guts leavin destroys Griffith, he lost his only friend, who sees him as equals and he himself consider equals subconsciously. And sadly both of them never know that and Griffith ego cannot cope with Guts leaving. And the rest is history.

      1. The Stranger was made by a French Philosopher who wrote and talked about existalism often and the meaning of life. Camus’ conclusion was that the meaning of life is whatever that you make it and that life was made for you to conquer whatever fears or doubts you had. Even that of those around you in comfortable way.
      The Stranger is a very skinny and simple book to read. But the ending is so powerful that it put me to tears. Everyone should read it.
      2. The Way of Kings was made by Brandon Sanderson; Sanderson was completed the Wheel of Time Books for Robert Jordan (who couldn’t complete his story). The Way of Kings follows four protagonist. It is a epic fantasy book under his series called the Stormlight Archive. Depression and embracing your life on YOUR terms is a big theme. It’s Avery thick book but time will pass as you read.
      3. Berserk. I’m getting emotional just typing this. I don’t want to spoil it at all for you. But it does talk about Depression and many great philosophies. Guts character development is out of this world. Teaches you to embrace your pain and your doubt; that you should do what you desire and seek purpose. I loved it.

    “When a man is faced with something he truly fears, he cannot ignore it. He has only two options... He can become subordinate and fall under its wing or he can strike it out and erase the fear.” - Griffith (before he became femto)
    I just finished reading chapter 362. I got through the manga (my first ever) and cant say enough how much I love it. After watching this analysis I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes from the whole story that has affected my life. It’s interesting now, realizing that Griffith said it, but he succumbed to his fears. He ended up being the one who fell under its wing and became the winged coward we know as Femto.

    I always found the circumstances leading up to Griffith's betrayal to be fascinating and very well played out. He reminds me, to a degree, of Walter White from Breaking Bad. Everything that happens to those characters is their own doing, both good and bad. And while the good may overshadow the negative parts for them, they're still present and lurking. Griffith never acknowledges his feelings for Guts to himself, let alone confides in Guts himself, so Guts is completely unaware of how hard Griffith will crash when he decides to leave. I've honestly wondered if Griffith maybe subconsciously knew what might happen to him if he were caught with Princess Charlotte and that was exactly the reason he did what he did.
    But when it all crashes down, he's not able to admit even to himself that his actions, or inaction, was the cause of everything he suffered. I really think that (if it gets finished, knock on wood) the ending of Berserk will see Griffith/Femto realize all of this, he won't have any choice but to acknowledge and confront that fact. I want to know what he'll do after that happens.

    • @Aliens1337
      @Aliens1337 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Griffith didn't plan to get caught. He tried to fight them off. I remember he was looking for his sword but then realized it was broken from the earlier fight with Guts.
      Griffith had sex with the Princess to have another subject to "own" in place of Guts, which he can seal the deal with her and becoming a noble if they married (Charlotte was crazily in love with Griff afterwards, still wanted him even when he's a crippled). But the biggest reason is to get over Guts. He told the Princess to "Forget all fear and pain" which is more likely convincing himself about losing Guts.

    • @jaspertorres6698
      @jaspertorres6698 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Alien I think op was trying to say that Griffith was subconsciously trying to sabotage himself after Guts left due to his inability to be truly open with his feelings towards Guts. It was a kind of emotional self harm.
      I don't think he really "planned" to get caught and then tortured for a year but he knew the risks and did it anyways because he didn't know how to cope with losing the one person he cared about.

    • @megaera2988

    I personally have a theory on Griffith that some of you might find interesting. Guts and Casca are branded. This is obvious. But when Guts was slaying Apostles in the Eclipse, I believe it was Slan that said something along the lines of, his fight is in vain and that the more he struggled, the better a sacrifice he would make. For me, this means two things: Guts and Casca survived the eclipse and suffered afterwards, though arguably not to the same degree. This means that when they die, they will give Griffith power. Not only this, but... and this is a bombshell.
    Griffith isn't a full god. Or at least, not a full god hand, whatever this entails.
    Guts, as a sacrifice, has suffered and struggled for a long, LONG time. Not only that, but has carved through hundreds of apostles I'd imagine. Now that, is one hell of a sacrifice. But here's the kicker - Until Guts and Casca die, Griffith isn't actually at full strength. Of course, he's at like... 98% strength, or something ridiculous. But the point is that until those two die, Griffith won't be at his fullest potential. So in a way, Griffith could still be mortal, could still be killed. Or at least, in theory. I somewhat doubt that Guts even in his current state of power is able to take on Griffith, though I don't doubt that he could; He's already shown many times that no matter what, he won't fucking die. But it also means that if the Black Swordsman fails in his inevitable clash with the Hawk of Darkness, Griffith will remain eternal and untouchable. Miura is a very tactical writer, most of what he writes has some form of meaning. And though it may just be a throwaway line from Slan, I feel almost like there may be some inkling of truth to it. There's also some proof that Griffith is not as untouchable as he seems: Rickert bitchslapping him, for example, is a sign that perhaps Griffith's mortal body can die. And though it might be a long shot, that might kill Griffith for good, considering that he inhabits that body in flesh. Mind, he'd probably just have a spiritual ejector seat.
    Perhaps this is all part of why Guts failed to land even a small smack on Griffith in the scuffle when the Count summoned the God Hand, and also why he is so fucking powerful. I'm not saying Guts is inheriting the power of a dark god, though that may even be the case: I'm saying that a god hand might not be harmed by an aspect of their own power, I.E. Guts. Perhaps that's the next part of Guts' quest, to find a way to exempt himself from the Brand, and therefore escape an eternity in hell and have a shot at fighting Griffith. That, or he might still have it all the way to the end of the story, and become some undying immortal akin to Skull Knight after the events of Berserk's conclusion. To be perfectly frank, I haven't read all of Berserk, but now that Casca is back I'm wondering where Guts will go, what his desire will be, and how he will handle the terror of his beloved, as well as how to deal with the new semblance of normality Casca's newfound sanity will bring to Guts' life.

    Really great video. And I like how you finally explained the basic concepts behind the Jungian psychology that are in berserk.
    But I would point out that in both cases they are not fulfilled. Griffith threw everything away and became his shadow, while Guts struggled through everything to be able to embrace it. Still, they both have each other, it's a projection of themselves on each other.
    The difference is the path a human can make in his life. I could write a really long paragraph here, but to put it simply, the answer lies in Chapter 349 "If you're alone, if it's just your life, you can use it however you please. Wear yourself out, get cut to ribbons, doesn't matter. But when there's two, the blade grows heavy. Fighting like death doesn't concern you become a thing of the past. It's no longer just you. I threw away my life, relied on the strength of others, and somehow pushed on."
    Basically it's the same thing, how difficult of a battle is inside of you, it's easier fought together. Embracing the shadow and fighting together for others with others, makes the life whole. It's not just about the "ego".
    There is an African proverb that says: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." I think it showed how important is to have the battles and experiences to become yourself + the social life with it's difficulties.
    It's the vague idea I wanted to share with you.
    Keep up with the videos. I'm glad I accidentally found your channel.

    Ok, even though i agree with most of the video i disagree when you say that "Griffith does not regret anything". In my opinion he do regret causing sorrow to Guts, when they met in the hill of swords in chapter 178 he declares that "he does not feel and is free", but for a moment he does not look directly in Guts eyes. When he says that Guts "strikes before talking" which he faces him with the same smile that he had when they first met, a fake smile full of solitude and eyes with a cold sadness. After that panel he is always portrayed facing away making the reader unable to see his expression, this simbolicaly is used to portray someone hiding his true feelings and/or lying. After that he declares that "he is free" but when Guts strike and Zod gets in the way Griffth is shown to never faced gut while he saying that he "didn't betrayed his dream". The pre-eclipse Griffth would feel sorrow but would keep his facade and pose in that situation. Even if Femto is the only thing that reamains in him at that moment it was not the member of the god hand entirely but the old Griffth that know that he did something very very wrong and regrets it but can't turn back or say he is sorry, because it would make every bad thing he did meaningless so he goes see Guts even knowing what would happen and not needing to do it, put a mask and told lies to himself for the sole reason to leave his past behind. I believe that Femto and Griffth are two diferent people, since Femto is the dark part that he let take it over unlike Guts who didn't.

      Any fondness or regret Griffith/Femto feels for his actions during the Eclipse come from Guts and Casca's child which exists inside him. You are giving the man too much credit. When he decided to sacrifice them he decided to let go of any emotional attachment to them. Guts and Casca are living on borrowed time and in spite of their destiny to die as sacrifices. To Griffith they are just walking corpses at this point; more people to walk over on his path to his dream.

    Omg I love this. People always say their dream ending for Berserk would be for Guts to kill Griffith in the most horrific way possible, but I don't think those people really understand the point of the story. It's not about killing things and taking revenge, it's about overcoming the desire for revenge. The Idea of Evil controls fate by affecting people with 'swells of emotion' that compel them to go down certain life paths (ambition, revenge, DREAMS, etc), so I feel like what makes Guts so special is how he practically is opposing fate itself by resisting the mindless desire to go after Griffith and focus on getting Casca to Elfhelm instead.
    Personally, my dream ending would be to have a final moment where Guts and Griffith understand each other, and they finally express themselves and see each other for who they really are.
    They should've been friends.

    • @jackmayor3574
      @jackmayor3574 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Charlotte, hmm I can understand that you want that. But I think what is MOST important to the ending of the Berserk is Griffith realizing his persona and relentlessness pursuit of his dream being achieved was the wrong approach all along.
      And while it would be interesting to see Guts forgive Griffith and seek to reconnect, it wouldn't be right to do this if Griffith refuses to self-reflect, have accountability for his actions, and seek to repair what he has destroyed.
      I mean can you really see Guts befriend a power-hungry, repressed persona that has abandoned his humanity? Befriending someone like that would simply endanger the lives of the innocent, the caring individuals he's grown close to since the eclipse. The most deserving of compassion would be at risk to the whims of Griffith's desires.

    I think I just realized something:
    Schierke has taken the role of Guts anima. She is literally guiding him mentally and physically. Not only does she help him to reintegrate his shadow / the beast of darkness, but she also helps him to accept himself by doing that.
    If I recall correctly , it is said that the anima will guide the man through the deepest depths of his own unconscious once he completely integrates and accepts the shadow and her.
    I can actually see Guts controlling the berserker armor on his own once he fully integrates his shadow and his anima.
    I wonder how and if the individual / collective unconscious and the self will also be involved in the future? I am sure they will be thematised considering how the other archetypes are already existing in the story.
    I feel like that Guts will also reach the self in the end, the goal of individuation.

    The whole anima thing i find so fascinating, because while Guts, a very macho strong scary brave manly man is developing his "femininity", Griffith (who looks very pretty, angelic and feminine) is so far away from developing his inner femininity. It's a nice contrast
    I really really love your videos. It's very well researched and you understand the characters so well, it makes me appreciate them even more. If you chose to make a video based on Berserk again, please do consider Farnese and her exceptional character development from witch burner to mage in training. You sound like you know a lot about philosophy & psychology and i think she'd make an interesting subject

    Guts embodies reality:
    Everytime an arc of berserk begins there is the theme of guts being antagonized because of how he straights kill demons, (for example the princess who tried swore revenge against guts because he killed his demon father, also the village after seeing burned kids and even the Vatican itself)
    Despite that guts sees what's real and decides to afront that.
    Griffith embodies fantasy:
    People idolize him, he is the escape from reality, people tend to follow him because they see a light, the problem with this light, is that in reality that light has costed many life misery and the worst of humanity incarnate, that's why he is the villain in every aspect and why guts it's the hero.
