Run with a buddy, or buddies. That was the biggest thing for me. When I can run a session the same length as the heat / main and still not need to marshal, I'm ready to race mentally.

Your videos are great, and very helpful. Rc racing is tough. I have been doing it for 3 years now, and have got pretty good at my local track. I have got better because I try hard to learn what can make my race go better. Your channel has been a big help/influence! Thanks for what you do man! Keep up the great work! Is that a 450? Spot on with the consistency %. I’m a 40+ guy not the fastest but I get podiums because my % is say 97-98%. I’ll go conservative in spots to not crash. I’ve heard young guys who are faster complain they can’t beat me and every time that’s the case. They are in ‘send it’ mode constantly and crash and are 92%. Makes a huge difference

Do you think you could post a video where its like a picture in picture during a race? One shot of your car on the track and the other shot of how you're hands are working the throttle and steering, timed together. I've never seen anyone do a video like that and it would really put into perspective the finesse required to be fast!

Thank you for this. I needed a reminder as its been about 10 years since I've driven an rc car/been in the hobby. Just picked up a 2020 xb4 a few weeks ago, have been practicing, and participated in a local carpet club race over the weekend, ran 4wd stock class and ended up taking home the win with a 92% consistency in the main! Along with a 92% consistency in two of the qualifiers. It was a very small class, but a great intro back into racing again!

Something that I see a lot of people struggling on race day or qualifers is how they drive after a crash. A lot of the times after one mistake people will try to "compensate" by trying to go faster, and it mostly results in more and bigger mistakes. It's something that I have to be very careful about!
its the mental working that is needed in that case that one mistake that need a marshall that is lost time that cant be compensated for and the only time that can be saved is the few tenths of a second that could be gained on the next guy up or the leader.
crashing is not winning if it leads to more crashes.

Hello, I’ve been following your page since Christmas. Once we started racing indoor. Now it’s nice out and the dirt tracks are opening up. Any chance you have experience with choosing or where to start with diff fluids, Center, front/rear? 4x is new to me and I understand the concept but not sure exactly what to look for when I do make a change. Thanks for your time!
I'm kinda cheap, and we race backyard dirt tracks here, but my tires get filled with mud/dirt after a few races and Its hard to balance them out without a bunch of work. Its expensive for me to buy new tires/rims every time this happens, but don't know if there is a thrifty way to take care of this issue and keep racing on the good tires I like!

so my brother and I just got back into rc we were running the team associated b4.1 worlds and sc10 factory team. Although these cars are from 2013 but well taken care of after every race so there well maintained and in brand new condition. should we consider getting update to date cars or should we continue to race our cars. and yes were still fast with these old cars and always giving a good run for the updated models cars on the track.

One of my biggest hurdles especially for 1/8th scale off road is still trying to figure out the pillow ball system on the AE Buggies and Truggies. But getting a setup that works best for me and how I drive

Lovin the vids bud. I started in carpet racing with the b6.2 about 5 months ago then got the 22x4 and started going to the track 4 months worth of practicing i finally put myself in a 4wd class. 1st qualifier placed 1st with the fastest and most laps. 2nd qualifier placed 3rd put me 5th in the main. finished 5th my 1st ever rc race and had the fastest lap of the night. So glad i chose to watch your vids on the 22x4. yea you race more clay but im the type that likes to make something work on something its not really designed or intended for. do you see yourself doing any kind of carpet racing? Thanks to guys like you making videos like this. BIG thumbs up.

What pinion gears should I get for the TLR 22x-4 as a starting point? As a. starting point. I would start with the 78t spur gear and I purchased a 13.5T motor and I am not much experience driver. I am based in the UK where temps are not very high and plan to start practicing on shorter tracks.

Question: the motor in my 1/8 scale buggy keeps moving around and coming loose and I found out it’s because there nothing under my motor to keep it from moving, what should I use to keep the motor from moving up and down when landing

It would be nice to learn a technique that would keep me from "blipping " the throttle. Especially in corners. It's upsetting the suspension. It's my biggest issue. 1/8 scale buggy and truggy electric. I've had many many practices trying to get smoother. I've switched to the hobbywing xr8 pro g2 setups because they have additional "smoothing " to the throttle curve. I still find myself blipping.

Don't out drive the car. Drive it straight and clean, as fast as the car wants to go. If it's not fast enough to keep up, make a change. And keep doing that until you are running up front. And never underestimate the tire.

Reasons to lose, 1)driving too fast to navigate the track without issues. 2) choosing bad lines. 3) poor race craft.
4) tires. 5) not avoiding crashed cars. 6) poor starts. 7) not handling pressure. 8) poor maintenance 9) being stubborn.
10) if you want to start winning learn to race 2wd mod buggy on med to low grip dirt. it will teach you everything.

I just got back into RC last year and the thing I'm struggling the most with is knowing what to look out for when thinking about setup changes. I'll split it up into two questions:
1: What tells me I need to change what exactly?
example 1: I'm on high-grip astroturf, at which point is traction rolling because of the car's suspension setup and at which point is it just because the tires are providing too much grip and need to be shaved down?
example 2: The track has some bumpy sections (it's an 8th scale track by nature) so there are some parts where the car can "kick up" and lose some speed down the straight. Do I adjust something on my setup so it takes it better when I have to hit it (e.g. because of multiple cars on the track) or do I just keep driving around that as much as possible?
2: How can I tell that something is because of setup or because of my driving/other circumstances?
example 1: There are a few sections that use a different type of Astroturf that's not as grippy. In those, for some reason, my 2WD has more drive out the corner than my 4WD. Do I just learn to live with that? Do I try some setup changes in hopes to get more drive out the corner?
example 2: There is one section where it's incredibly easy to upset the car. If I hit it just right at high speed I can save a ton of time, but over a few laps the mistakes that inevitably happen make the reward not worth the risk. I've learned how to attack it differently to get a slower but more consistent outcome, but I keep wondering if there's a way to set up the car that makes it less likely to get upset at that point, or at least predictable enough to hit that section in the faster way more consistently.
I've never really tinkered with setup much, before my RC break it was incredibly grassroots (in some sections literally) at my track so setups were more like: "wheels on the car? generally pointing in the right direction? ok, looks good!" so all my experience is in driving around a shitty setup ^^
1:if you are traction rolling on astro with tires older than like 8-10 minutes of runtime its definitely setup related. some guys like to set their cars up to where they will roll in the first minute or two of running on a new set of tires, but after that it wont roll anymore. I usually set my car up to where it could only possibly roll in the first minute if at all, then you can run a set of tires in before the day starts for a couple of laps and take the edge off and you will be good from there.
I would play with the shock setup to try to calm it down over bumps.
2:your 2wd car shouldn't have more drive out of the corner than your 4wd, something is wrong with the setup/tires there.
there is definitely a way to set the car up so it won't get upset when you drive it through whatever section you are talking about, although you would need to describe the issue and the section so i could further assist you

1: Forgot to mention, this case is for 8th scale, with yellow Mini Pins. Completely untreated they have so much grip that they'll basically manage to traction roll everything you mount them on, I could probably pop them on a Truggy and they'll roll it (actually, I'll have to try that). Finding the point where I should stop focussing on the tires and start tinkering with setup (and then, what to change) is where my issue lies. I managed to calm it down a lot with less droop and harder ARBs (rn I'm on literally the hardest ones you can get before you have to bend your own) but it's still edgy.
Haven't had any traction rolling problems with 10th scale, I'll likely try to up the corner bite at some point but rn I can't get enough track time (limited due to pandemic restrictions) to really spend a ton of time tinkering.
Where do I start with the shock setup? Harder oil? Slightly higher ride height in hopes that it catches more of the bump before bottoming out? Do I touch the springs at all?
2: The 2WD and 4WD are running the same rears, obviously different fronts though. Aside from tires (I ordered a few to play around with) what setup change could increase drive out of the corner? The specific problem I have is that we have a hairpin directly followed by a drop down(seriously, less than a car length between apex and the drop), on the 2WD I can take the hairpin tight and make the drop, on the 4WD I have to go wide to hit it consistently, otherwise it's a coinflip.
The section where I can upset the car is hard to explain, it's basically a combo of a landing, bumps and a slight bend.
@@KacKLaPPeN23 1: try moving the link on the ackermann plate back, this will calm the car down a lot on the wheel. you can also try raising the upper links and lengthening them, this will make the car noticeably less responsive. It will roll more, but it will have less camber gain and the roll center will be lower, and this will keep the chassis from rising and flipping the car over as you load the outside tires. Usually with oils on a bumpy astro track i run the heaviest oil I can without the car being a disaster in the bumps.

@@RyanHarrisRC Once she's comfortable enough to get around the track without tipping over, get her on a big bike, it makes a huge difference. I myself will always need start blocks on a big bike (165cm, or 5'5 in american units) but the big bikes are just so much easier to ride. They'll always straighten back up due to the larger wheels and riding them on a blown out track is night and day.
Back when I was riding 85cc I had massive problems on a blown out track, my friends always told me that it wasn't that bad and to just "ride over the ruts". Then I had engine problems and got to ride a mate's 125 for the rest of the day and suddenly the ruts were no problem, even though I was even shorter back then I still managed to get around. Sure I had a hell of a time to get back on once I tipped it over as it was set up for a 6' tall guy but once you're on it it's a whole different world.
I hear lots of people mention "race program" how do you develop a race program? What is needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated
A race program is basically the effort you put into it... When someone says, there race program is going well? They mean, the car they run is good, the setup is good the time they put into it, has payed off... it's like... put the things you do on race day, to prepare, and race... and that is your race program. If you are to trying to "up" your race skills? Start working on the things needed, to be successful. Look to those that have been successful for guidance. Good luck! 👍

Practice is the best teacher, but having your cars in good running condition it's key to start with kit, stock setup and go from there with one change at a time. If you do more than 1 setup change at a time, its hard to know what difference either made. Good luck man!

A race program is a solid effort and dedication to getting a car dialed in. You know the car well from countless wrench sessions. You have several base references for setup based on different track conditions. You’ve run several race days successfully to rule out any possible mechanical faults as best you can. The list goes on, but basically you try to develop a solid vehicle and race effort over time 🤘
