      Ryan Harris Thanks so much for your contribution to the RC community; your instruction is fantastic. Is there any chance you might do a video on the best use of modern ESC’s? The modern ESC has so many options to program and I’m struggling to find decent guidance on when/how much to use all these settings for tuning RC cars.

    We need videos about driving technique! Everyone says 'practice more', but few people have specific advice about how to drive well. PLEASE make some videos about proper cornering, passing, and jumping. The best tires won't help terrible habits :) Love your videos BTW.

      Yes the right tires can make a bad setup still work. Yes I agree technique for braking, cornering jumping would be good. Finding the fast line. Really need info on when to change shock oils and diff oils? What happens when you change to a lighter oil compared to a thicker oil?

      Good technique and putting in fast laps comes with time, when you feel the setup is good you just have to put in laps. You can have two fast guys that can put in the same lap time but have completely different style and setup. Therefore it’s very hard for anyone to teach technique beyond “be smooth in your inputs”, “take the inside line” “ keep your corner speed up”. To progress beyond the basics can take years in rc

      @@1stkeyhomebuyers some good points but what if there is one thing your doing wrong. You know some of my races I am only 2-3 seconds behind the fast guys. Closing that gap could be one thing that helps. Tutorial on how to drive better would be helpful.

      @@Adventurekm - That is very hard; to teach technique for an RC car. It's not a physical sport like skiing or baseball where technique takes on a whole different role. It would be interesting to see what tips could be provided but like so many things that are skill based - practice is the best way to get better. Just like how people prefer different locations on the driver's stand, there are many different driving styles that may or may not work for you.

    I check my car every week before I race. (Clean, re-oil bearings, rebuild transmission, make sure everything moves freely)
    And I rebuild my shocks every 2-4 weeks
    And I take EVERY part off of it and do a full rebuild about once-twice per season... and before any big races.

    I race touringcars and for me the mindset is very important too, when i think about the event to much I set myself under pressure. A few years ago I always looked on the entry list and thought about where I should end up in the race. When its not going the right way I start to get very frustrated and just push the car and make alot of mistakes, its almost like I gave up. The best races for me are the ones where I dont think about this stuff and just focus on my driving. My friend on the other hand really wants to win and is very confident when he goes to a race and this works best for him. I think that its very important that you are selfconfident and trust your abilitys.

    These are great and things that you've listed and I learned to do a lot of what you mention as a sponsored driver through 1985 to 1996 and things I assume everyone does or knows about. I even keep track a checklist of all my maintenance items and dates they've were done last. I track them in Microsoft One Note. Each car I own has it's own tab with all the maintenance items listed for that particular car. In my OneNote file (that is Synced on my phone, laptop, and even work computer) that has tabs for Gear Ratios, Rear Pill settings, Wing Setup, Axel Heights, Specific Track Notes, Setting up and breaking in a Differential, and Slipper Clutch setup to name a few.
    I even keep a flash drive with folders for each car. For example, my B6.1D folder has folders in it of each piece of equipment in that car (Chassis, ESC, Servo, TX-RX) and within the Chassis folder I have my filled out setup sheets under a "Setup Sheets" folder along with ones I've downloaded for the car and track like Spencer Rivkin's setup sheet. I keep a binder with me of all this stuff at the track as well, but the electronic files are easier to zoom into and read if I have a laptop at the track.
    I've learned over the years to be organized, consistent, and taking good notes of everything I'm doing or things I've tried while learning how to setup of a car.
    When I was a kid my dad did a lot of the work on the cars and kept a small notebook with him at all times about all the things we tried at different tracks. I took what he started and just organized it a little better. My dad raced dragsters on a dry lake bed in the 40's and 50's and if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have been successful RC racer. I was able to get back into the swing of things pretty quick after taking 20 years off and I owe a lot of that to my dad as well as how I used to approach every day of racing at different tracks all over California when I was younger.
    It's a mental thing for me to know when the car has been torn down and rebuilt and that there's nothing bent or worn out. I have plenty of tires that are ready to go for different conditions that the track I'm at may go through during a day of racing. When I get to the track I know that all I have to do is fine tune the car and work on driving the car.
    As Ryan touched on in the video, the prep you do before ever getting to the track can go a long way in how you're able to mentally handle a race day. Some days are going throw you a curve ball, and that's fine, but the more prepared you are for the day beforehand then those curve balls won't be such a shock to you when they do happen. If I feel like I'm behind the eight ball all day then I figure that it's because I didn't plan for that day ahead of time.
    Great stuff Ryan, keep up the good videos. I've been learning a lot and being reminded of a lot of things by watching your work. I wish you were closer to California, I feel you approach racing in a very similar way to how I approach it, would be cool to share ideas.

    Problem is there is a lot of people that don't have local track like myself that have to travel a hour + indoor or outdoor its not possible to practice during the week like local can only on race day weekend . So they will always have the upper hand when its come to being fast and winning.

    My best tip, and I fail to do it because I have a hectic life, is GET TO THE TRACK WHEN THEY OPEN! Be the first to make some practice laps. The people who complain most about not keeping up are the same ones that are last to the track, rarely practice, don't go through their chassis during the week, and don't practice driving enough. Blame only yourself for your performance. I would bet most guys who win at any club don't have the best motor there. They're the best driver with decent gear.

    I love your content man. I just started getting into this hobby around November. I've learned so much from TH-cam already. Your videos have been some of the best. Unfortunately for me I still haven't even made it to a track yet. I got a Kyosho Ultima Rb6.6 readyset to get me started and I've been wrenching on it as much as my budget allows. I just put a Hobbywing Xerun 17.5T motor with the X10 esc in it. Converted to shorty Lipo and rearranged everything for a clean look and nice balance. I wish I could post pics here to show you. I'm pretty proud of it honestly. Lol Also it would be incredible if I could get any suggestions or tips from you. Oh well. For some reason I'm a little nervous about going to my local track, while I'm dying on the inside to get there at the same time. According to my bumpy, hard pack, dirt/sand driveway the car doesn't even feel like the same car anymore. I have far more control and "feel" with it now. And over bumps and tiny jumps it stays low and flat. I've gone almost all aluminum steering parts including the horn. I'm definitely going to upgrade my servo within a few weeks. I'm also getting a Sanwa radio and receiver. I might sound crazy for doing all these upgrades without having driven on a track yet, but I know what I want. I just ordered my carbon fiber shock towers today, but I'm going to wait until I'm comfortable with the track before installing them. I'm sure I'll make a fair amount of bonehead mistakes and I'd hate to crack up the new ones first. Lol Anyways, sorry about the long winded comment. I just wanted to "talk shop" somewhere where people had the same interests. My coworkers and girlfriend basically tune me out when I start talking rc now. 😂😂 Thanks for great learner friendly videos. You really are helping people. Never stop. You're the man.

    Thanks for the great effort making your channel high quality and so helpful. I just started in 1/10 2wd buggy (clay) - first 1/10, first 2wd. Come from a 2wd 1/8 racing - 1/5 bashing background. I went with a TLR 22 5.0 and am really liking it. Are you planning on doing a "my 2wd setup" update now that you've switched to TLR? I would love to see what you do with your car and what your philosophy behind tuning the 22 is. Thanks again!

    hi Ryan. i think a lot of guys like it, if you make a video about, how to approach the raceday itselfe.
    like for example. (BTW i drive 1/10th onroad F1 on a high level, like ETS series)
    i see a lot of people make a BIG setupchange on a track thats still "damp" or not gripped up, like after the 1st practise.
    this is a BIG no-go, but it takes a LOT of confidence to not change your setup, and trust that the track WILL grip up.
    so with what mindset do you approach the heat your about to drive??
    in my opinion, after the right prep. that i how you win an event. right mindset and train of thoughts.
    i might be able to write a book on, how to approach a race, a heat, a final, a overtake.......
    That why i love racing!!! there is so much in it, and so much to learn

    How about a video on open cell v.s. closed cell foams? Also the prep of foams, I have seen pros punching holes into the foams. Why would you do this? How does the track's traction level affect what foams you want to use? Just trying to see any reason I would run open cell.

      He did a video about charging and discharging.
      But, since you asked, he charges his batteries with 40 Amps and dischargs them with 30 Amps.

    i always tell people new coming in or who want to be fast; every minute of track time is 25 minutes off track... making the car as good as it can be to your ability at home.. but noobs still get hung up on their previous race results vs where they should be today.. at some point i stop talking... and just... rebuild my shocks.. or flush my bearings haha..

    For me i'd say "awareness" you have to be aware of what the car is doing and what you are doing compared to the other drivers... overtime you will understand things more quickly and find speed in your equipment and your driving.

    Ryan, I have spawned a reasonable sized group of traxxas spec racers in my area. It started with one guy, I let him drive my truck,he liked it and bought his own. Now about 6 of his friends also race. The stock slash class is now the largest at the track almost every race day! What I need are suggestions for tire prep. Since we are required to run stock tires what do you suggest for tire prep? I would love to pass on something for these guys to help them out. Thanks for your content! Jim

    Ryan I am getting back into the hobby after what seems like forever, there is a carpet track fairly close so I plan on racing. I have a 17.5 motor/ESC already and a few 5000mah 2s lipos(not shorty) what would you recommend as a kit to race on carpet with

    Quick comment and question. I thank u for ur tips. They r help me on my second year of racing. But i race Vta and gt. All on road. I use ur tips to get better. And the guys at my track n North Carolina sees it. I have made the A-main once. I know for u its old but i was happy and excited. I drive on a poor mans budget but im still on the backs of the guys that r pouring hundreds into their cars with more years than me. Im not going to b awesome like u but my question. Do u know of any other tc drivers who do videos to help out the starters?

      My gearing is 100% subjective to the track layout. Jump types, lengths of straights, temperature all factor what your gearing should be.

    I would only add for the nitro racers that are newer, get a good tune on your engines before race day! Cause I was that guy, and it really sucks putting all that time and effort in preparing for race day, and to show up with new engines and have zero to NO idea on how to tune it! Then your getting random ppl wrenching on your buggy in pit lane, with guys that have zero history of that engine. Or even worse, you're constantly flaming out during your race due to your bad tune, and now your pit guys running around like a chicken with his head cut off scrambling to get you fired back up... hopefully your starter box isnt a pos either... God I love nitro lololol

    Hi Ryan, it's ever a pleasure to watch your videos, i'm looking at you from France.
    Do you already have a 22X-4? i'd like to know if you prefer it from a B64?
    I tried a B64 of a friend of mine and i think it's easier to drive than a 22-4 2.0 on the track of my club track, an old school dirt track that i like, my car is hard to drive.
    What do you think of it?

      @@RC-ty5ym But not this time, i tried the Xray XB4 too and iot's easy to drive too, but Ryan was driving a B64, not a XB4.

    Pro Line tires are overpriced. A pair of schumacher tires costs 10 bucks.
    And they are really good
