I'm 58 and have mostly been listening to new music for the past ten years but I love these reaction videos where young people are knocked out by how great the music of my youth was. This one has always been one of my favorites and I think it's Kool and the Gang's best.

We were spoiled. When I was a little kid - I just assumed every song on the radio was good. For example - this song was released in 1979. Google "top 100 r&b songs of 1979"......and just look at that list, in all its glory. That was every day. We heard stuff of that quality........every. damn. day. And that was not EVEN the 80's yet - where you had the dueling superstars....MJ and Prince....just killing it. Also the growth of rap/hip-hop. And the beginning of MTV, and BET. Then the balladeers came with the Quiet Storm in the mid to late 80s. And then the 90s. Man, we had it NICE...

Most of us took these great songs for granted. It was just the popular music. There was another cut just as good coming on the radio right after it. If I knew it was going to end I would have payed closer attention, lol. But it's heartwarming to see young bros like you with an ear for what's real. I'm not too proud to say I get a little choked up sometimes when I think of the time these songs represent and how much of it has passed. Damn.

The producer was a white guy from Rio, Eumir Deodato. He got his first break at age 17 (irony) when he arranged and conducted a 28-piece orchestra. He ultimately became one of the city’s most active arrangers and pianists, recording for Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim. In 1968, Deodato moved to NYC, working with Luiz Bonfa and scoring the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. His reputation was further strengthened by pop arrangements for Frank Sinatra, Roberta Flack and Kool & The Gang. In a rare talk at the 2005 Red Bull Music Academy, Rio’s legendary arranger underlines the importance of

The album that first featured JT as their lead singer. It changed the "sound" from FUNK to primarily R & B. Another great group that is still kicking today!! Their horns are legendary along with EWF, Tower of Power, Brass Construction.....acoustic sounds were still BAAAAAD!! 1979.....end of the greatest decade of music! If you want to dwell into their earlier work....that greatest hits pic you have with Hollywood Swinging, Jungle Boogie is where you'd start. But one on there....Open Sesame!! THAT is an all-time FUNK groove with horns like no other!!

I remember this song very well. I was about 8 years old when it came out. My Mother, may she rest in peace, used to always play this song. Between my Mother and Father, I grew up listening to Soul, R n' B, Funk, Jazz and Reggae.
MANY years later, I would use this song to describe the temperature outside when some would ask me how hot it was, stating that it was... "Too hot, too hot, Lady... Gotta run for shelter. Gotta run for shade".

Kool & The Gang was THAT group. They dominated the 80s. They crossed over. I really do not get the literal silence about their legacy, or their contribution to music in general. They have more than 2, more than 4, more than 6 classics. Their body of work runs deep.

Kool and the Gang started as a jazz band. You can tell in that smoothness in some of their songs. Too Hot, is one of my favorites and is regularly spun on the oldies stations. Oh, and there is an extended version they did live.

Another great skaters jam, like Give Me the Night, & Ladies Night. The tenor saxophone solo is Ronald Bell, Robert ‘Kool’ Bell’s brother, who was the main producer & eventually he stopped appearing live with the band, while still producing. I think his Muslim name is Khalisse. Woa! Sorry bruh, I’m just finding out that he passed last September, 2020. I hadn’t heard. Wow! Well, great choice of song. That Best Of collection seems to have pretty much all the hits. I know you like Summer Madness, which is the instrumental. You should also check the live version if you can find it. They also had a hit that got a lot of video play called, Emergency.

Kool and the gang were one of the funk bands who successfully crossed over when the disco era came by adding J.T. Taylor. Their sound changed dramatically from such song as: "Jungle Boogie", "Spirit of the Boogie", "Music is the Message", and their classic "Love the Life you Live"....and one of my favorites "Whisper Softly".

This was the second hit on the Ladies Night album. Then came Celebration and they popped out. I'm not mad they went and got the money but the music was never this quality again. The outlier is Take My Heart. For this and Ladies Night, LISTEN TO THE ALBUM VERSIONS!!!!!! It completes the story for this song.

You are right about us oldsters being spoiled with great music.
Back then you could barely get around to it all.
Not enough hours in a day to really get to appreciate everything.
You are the first I've heard to react to "Too Hot."
There is soooooo much to get to.

The 70’s was big in extended versions. They called it 12” versions. They were usually Disco/Dance music 2 keep people on the dance floor longer. Another person who did a lot of 12” versions was Prince. That’s only because that brother had a lot 2 say musically. I’m reverting lol!
Too Hot was a MF cut. Those days was the best musically & otherwise 👍🏽
