    I thought it was alot better than the trailer made it out to be. There were even parts where I teared up. It definitely wasn't without it's flaws, but I didn't think it was half bad

      Disney Channel trailers in general are hilariously misleading, especially for episode previews.

    This was actually a really good movie not the best advertising but still a good movie. I like how the lost of a parent was an actual plot point and not just some random fact to make you go awww and then we move on. I agree with you with Peyton's acting and I feel the same goes here with Jacob (I watched Kirby Buckets and there was just something there that rubbed me the wrong way) I also agreed with you on Jake respecting Ellie's body. For example when they did body swapping in the Scooby doo movie the first thing Fred did was look under the girl's shirt. I was kinda hoping for a little bit more Devyn but I agree the movie doesn't depend on the support cast but mainly on the leads and their family dynamic after the lost of a loved one. My favorite supporting cast members would have to be Jake's brothers. I was proud of Disney taking a step forward and not backwards like how they did with Zapped. They used something that many kids do go through and I liked how Ellie's life wasn't terrible when her dad left it was better if she allowed for change to happen and when Jake had her let go her life started improving. The re designing of Jake's room was nice and it showed how he despite what his dad has tried to establish Ellie still believes that he needs comfort and love. Jake needed to teach Ellie to let go and Ellie needed to teach Jake you can't push everything over into a corner and pretend that it doesn't exist.

    At the beginning I thought that the movie would be what the previews said it was, but the more I watched the more impressed I was by the movie and its message. One thing I loved was that Jack's brothers cared for him and weren't jerks like in other DCOMs. Thanks for the review and btw the GMW Halloween episode is actually worth a watch this time around, just thought I'd let you know. :)

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I also loved that about Jack's brothers! Kind of reminded me of the guy that played Jason Dolley's brother in Read It and Weep, but two of them and given a larger role.

    There were definitely some parts where I got a little misty-eyed and stopped and thought to myself, “Is this Disney movie actually making me cry right now?” Like When Ellie was opening up to her mom and Jack to his dad, that made me get all up in the feels so hard.

    Me: OK. Now that I have seen the movie, let's go to The Disney Brain!
    I really like the movie. Of course it had some silly elements, but it had a lot to offer. Besides, I liked the fact that (SPOILER) they don't end up together. I think that a lot of Disney movies could be good if they don't focus so much on having a love story for the leads. You can be happy and single.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I actually really liked that element as well. And I liked how the movie didn't even try to play if off like thy might have feelings for each other because they work better as friends and that's perfectly alright. And the best part about that is how it adds to the emotional expression message because nobody really ends up officially together at the end which makes sense because there's a lot of baggage each character needed to unload before they made such a commitment.

    I got an advance copy of the book this is based on a couple years ago and it totally blew me away. There wasn't any rhythmic dancing and it was less Disney-fied + Jack and Ellie's parents got married at the end so they ended up being step-siblings. I liked the movie a lot, but I definitely recommend reading the book for this plot done 10x better (and with no magic cellphones). Great review as always!

      Comparing a written plot to a movie plot doesn't make any sense. They are two vastly different mediums relying on vastly different senses and utilizing vastly different storytelling techniques to get their points across.
      I'm not trying to put down book purists here, I'm just saying that I genuinely do not get why everyone has this fascination with comparing the two for literally every movie version of anything when the value in doing so is minimal at best. Am I missing something? Because I feel like I'm missing something.

    • @voletmoonblaze
      @voletmoonblaze 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Disney Brain Just seeing this, whoops. Generally I think about books and their movie adaptations as completely separate things and I was pretty much able to do for this movie. I just wanted to let people who enjoyed the movie know that there *is* a book for this (since I didn't see anything about it being an adaptation) that's really great. Lol, I love books but I definitely wouldn't consider myself a book purist when it comes to adaptations since they're such different mediums.

    This was a lot better movie than I thought it would be. I actually liked it. It was funny and sad. Just like a Pixar movie! The commercials and promos were honestly very misleading.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, completely misleading, as with most Disney Channel previews and trailers. But because of what this movie revealed itself to be, I'm actually glad. I like the feeling of coming into a movie and having it exceed my expectations.

  • @saintwinona
    @saintwinona 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Adventures in Babysitting was OK, but it disappointed lots of people because it was over hyped and didn't match our expectations. Since it was the 100th DCOM and a reboot of a popular 80's film, people expected more. Honestly, if it was not overhyped, lots of people would like the movie. The trailers mislead us...

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think you make a good point about the marketing and the hype machine that surrounded it. But I never thought it would be anything special based on those advertisements so it had the opposite effect in me where I was questioning why over market this movie at all? It was a strange choice to make the 100th DCOM not only an average distraction, but barely original.

    • @saintwinona
      @saintwinona 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In my opinion, Descendants should've been postponed so it could DCOM 100. I love that movie. Anyway, nice videos. Subscribed.

    I really enjoyed this film, even more than expected. Peyton was hilarious in her role, I knew she'd be great in a Dcom, and hope she gets more. The movie was very entertaining, nice co stars, and the story about the parents was really sweet.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "More than expected" seems to be the general consensus. But, at least this time around, I liked that DC seemed to purposely keep all the important stuff hidden until you actually watched the film :)

    • @mikeysampopowich7459
      @mikeysampopowich7459 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point about the time it takes to learn new skills, espec among different genders, which is why I liked this movie more. With Disney, and most Hollywood, some suspension of belief is required, but it's the main message that is important in the film, and creativity.

    • @mikeysampopowich7459
      @mikeysampopowich7459 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more I think about this movie, the more I appreciate it. You're right, the characters did develop well over the film, and it may have been tough for Jacob to play the more sensitive type, but almost equally challenging is Peyton playing the male role who is supposed to hold their feelings back. Again, that's why I liked this movie so much, the important, and current issue of gender. It was also really funny, Peyton cracking her neck like a boy, the doctor's appt., the spa day.

    This wasn't that bad of a movie. I didn't expect much going into the movie, but there were some really powerful scenes. Some parts I even started tearing up. I'm glad they didn't follow the cliche of Ellie and Jack get together. The beginning was okay, but it got better has the movie went on. Overall, I quite enjoyed this movie. It's not perfect, but it is pretty good.

    • @TheDisneyBrain

    I watched your review before watching the movie, and you are right. The movie wasn't perfect but it made me feel something I haven't felt in a DCOM movie, my aunt recently passed away so I really understood Jacks struggles (which is slightly harder, since it was his mom, and I definitely shed some tears) There were some hit or miss moments that didn't really push the plot forward but I am really glad I have this movie a shot. I think I actually commented about this movie before on one of you other videos, it's funny how some times what you first see is not what you end up with. This was so much better than Zapped in so many ways and even better in my opinion then AINBS which ironically was supposed to be really good (at least the advertisement made is seem so). I encourage anyone who is skeptical to watch is cause it has some really good things to learn and take away.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for sharing your personal take on the matter.
      I'm glad what we got here actually felt important. It's not something many DCOMs have been able to claim recently and honestly, The Swap might arguably be the best DCOM since Let It Shine, and that's saying something.

    personally i was kinda dreading this movie mostly because it's based off of a book that i actually really enjoyed (probably one of my faves) and i figured this movie was just going to ruin it. Although they kinda got rid of the best parts of the book (scenes and one of my fave characters) it was much better than i thought and i was really surprised. nice job writers

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I too was genuinely impressed with some of the back end writing, but I was more captivated by the way they framed the scenes that needed to hit. It's a lot of little details with shot composition, timing, and acting working together that made those elements work well.
      I'll never be the kind of reviewer that compares books to movies, but I do feel like the best parts of this film simply can't exist in text form because of the inherent limitations of that medium. Not trying to bash a book I've never read, just saying I appreciate the camera work in this one.

  • @beyw3152

    such a good movie. I only watched the movie to see if DCOMS still had it especially after seeing the terrible adventures in babysitting. definitely became a Peyton and Jacob fan after watching this film. during the moments where Jack was reading the paper he wrote and that his mom signed and Ellie going through the old photos with her dad and ex bestfriend really made me tear up. let's just hope Disney has more great DCOMS in store for us.

    • @TheDisneyBrain

    I had already watched your review before actually getting to see the movie, but still it surprised me all the way. I didn't like the protagonists on their respective shows but I just loved them here (specially the guy, I don't remember his name right now).

    This was definitely a better movie than I thought it would be. I was skeptical about watching it because of the trailer, but I decided that a lot of times Disney Channel is very misleading in their previews for their shows as well as their DCOMs, so I decided give it a shot and I'm glad I did. It wasn't the best DCOM, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible either. It was good.

    There is also muscle memory to account for. Muscle is when you practice something son long that the muscles the perform these actions do them without the nerves "asking" it to. In this case the muscle would not have them transferred in the body swap.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but that isn't something that's built into the muscles through motor memory. A region of the brain called the basal ganglia is what primarily controls learned response to outside stimuli i.e. playing hockey or dancing in a particular way, which is why I made the point that the only way to make that situation plausible is by swapping certain parts of the mind while leaving others. But also the science behind that movie mechanic is also nonexistent so there's also that, lol.

      The Disney Brain I'm back! I finally watched the movie and watched your review. I agree with everything that you said and idk but throughout the movie Peyton list looked like her stomach hurt or something. Idk if that's a good thing or not but it because of the fact that she's playing a guy in a girls body so I understand why the character would look uncomfortable. Btw it's funny how your pronounce words that start with the letter "h" towards the end of the video; you get really into it. I also agree that they should've put a bit more attention on their friends and the movie should've been like 20 minutes longer so that they could've put some more attention on other characters

    This was a great movie. Even though I'm a girl I always feel bad that guys don't get the same kind of treatment that girls do. So for this movie to show that guys have feelings as well I found that great. I have to agree that Jake was really great in a body that wasn't his. I love how they make you think that they have one problem but at the end they have a different problem. This worked so well in Avalon High and it worked well here. I felt they could have used a different way to make "The Swap" but other than that it was a great movie.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they found a way to keep most of the emotional elements the same while removing the swap itself as a plot device along side some of the writing that followed it, then I would easily call it a top 20-25 DCOM all time.

    I just watch this like literally 2 minutest ago and it's one of my new favorites and I think I laughed at every joke no matter how cliche it was LOL and I loved the amount of depth it I mean it wasn't great but i really wasn't expecting it based on the commercials it looks a lot more wacky and stuff than it was and I was very surprised and even though it was a minor detail I 100% agree with you on the jack having a lot of respect thing or at least a ton more than most teenage boys would and yes I know it's a Disney film but still and even though it had such a small part in the movie it was one of those things that I was still thinking about in the back of my head till the end of the movie and also the acting was 100% on point like I can't even explain it

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also really liked how the different camera shots used in the movie conveyed different angles on the emotional moments. There was a lot of interesting nuance with the way they filmed those parts.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say that I have seen that movie. But just in terms of comparing to its peers, I'd say it's better than Invisible Sister, does more with it's characters than Descendants, and has close to the emotional execution of a Lemonade Mouth.

    • @rubyoise796
      @rubyoise796 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Disney Brain can you explain your opinion on how it is better than Invisible Sister?

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ruby oise Of course! So with Invisible Sister, you have a core mechanic that works because it provides a great metaphor for figurative invisibility. That makes it a smarter movie but a lot of the elements within the movie don't work cleanly at various points. What The Swap does is sacrifice being a smarter movie for being a better movie in my opinion by going further with how people love, connect, and properly move on, which are elements not nearly as present in Invisible Sister since the sister relationship is given as much depth as the characters of Ellie as Jack here. I could go on but those are basically my thoughts.

    I did really see the movie yet, but I have seen some clips. and I really liked them. I saw the parts that had the sad, teary parts in them and that's what sold me on the movie as a a whole. and my thought process is put that way, so that if I see something that allows me to cry( something I love to do firing movies because most movies that are sad enough for tears are very deep emotionally.) I'm all about being in touch with my emotions and sometimes I'm a very spiritual being, so tears equal good with me, if that makes sense. I plan to watch the entire thing, and at least now I really know from somebody else that it was good. I always need a second or third opinion when it comes to movies because like I've said several other times in other comments, I love like eveything I watch. and it's weird, if I cry during a movie sometimes because usually it's hard for me to cry, but I'm an empathetic feeler, when other people have step g emotional responses to things like anger orcrying, I get the same way. so, I end up crying at a lot of movies that I see. like suicide squad, after Harley thought the joker had died, I was in tears.
    I swear I wasn't this girly when I w as little, but I see it more as being in touch with my emotions.
    anyway, this review was great and it helped me make a really important decision on whether or not I would watch the full movie. and I always knew that Jacob Bertrand looked familiar. now I know he was in jinxed. I love that movie so much it's not even funny. but I loved swindled even more, how about you??? also did you ever see one crazy cruise(another Nick movie)??
    well, until next time!!

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can relate to most of your points. I don't cry a lot in movies but I do feel for many characters.
      I think Swindle is probably the best put together, most fun Nick TV Movie to date, unless you count the Big Time Rush Movie, which is even more fun if not less sensibly plot driven. But beyond those two and Rags, I haven't seen many Nick TV Movies. I'll probably watch Jinxed at some point though and probably review one of the four movies I mentioned.

      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheDisneyBrain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @zupergurkan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Disney Brain I haven't seen the movie in a few years so I don't remember but I looked it up on Halloween Wikia where it says that it's implied that he's dead, so that's one yet so far against like 10-20 at least or something^^

    • @breannamay8800
      @breannamay8800 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That soccer movie with Emily Osment. The movie starts off after her dad dies. I think it's because there is a stereotype that woman are more parental and caring, so they are less likely to leave and not have any relationship with their child.

      Manuel Danner that's true, but Disney can still be enjoyed by both, like I watch a lot of boy shows, like yu-gi-oh zexal digimon fusion and dragon ball and naruto (anime but still) but I get where your coming from there are some shows just for girls and boys, like winx club (a really girly show but still cool through seasons 1-3 but really girly through seasons 4-6 but go's back to awesome season 7 and can't wait for season 8) but I think Disney isn't like that, I think all shows can relate to both, whether it's a female or male lead I hope I make sense
      But I probably don't so sorry for wasting your time :(
