HEY MIKE when you use that tar especially where you live if you want it to last and I know your not that worried about the roof part of the job but if you use fabric its sold near the tar n stuff put a little fabric in between the layers of tar that should make your chimney job water tight for many many years just in case there not roofing it !

I talk about it some on "How I build a stone fireplace" (Part 1) Mike Haduck. I would think everybody got their own opinion on this and it will all depend on how much you would use it. check with the code guys to make sure. thanks mike

Mike thank you for the informative videos. I truly like your work because it provides information that is not taught in the books. I am hoping you could make a video on how to solve a problem like mine. I am looking to tuck point my 100 year old chimney, it has a witches bend. The chimney section in the basement is in good shape, mortar is good. The section in the attic has the bend, and the mortar between the bricks crumbles to the touch. I was quoted 800 dollars that I don"t have righ now. Bbecause of the bend, I am afraid that one of these days,it will come tumbling down and my home will collapse lol! No laughing matter! I have worked with cement before but never done a chimney and I am not able to find any info on how to tackle this situation. Should I start from the base (from the attic floor up, or from the top where it meets the roof and then down? Should I tuck point just a few bricks at the time to avoid weakening it too much? I am afraid to brush out too much of the old mortar and risking the whole thing to fall down...Help! Your advise is very much appreciated.

Hi baba, it’s a hard question to answer, most people are doing away with masonry chimneys, And going to power vents, because eventually they all rot away, two years after i fixed his chimney, That is what the owner did, I always say just like the dentist, take it down to where it’s bad and replace the bad part, I think that would be your call, I hope it helps thanks Mike

POLYMER MODIFIED MASONRY CEMENT mixed with some PORTLAND CEMENT a trowel or two mixed in like you say for the weather in Pennsylvania be used to attach one section of 13 by 13 inch square 2 feet long terracotta pipe keeped in place a an extension for better draft of my chimney Mike ?? The section will be cemented and inch or two higher than the masonry joint to keep it in place and not get blown off the roof Sir ?? Please give me your best view on this top of the chimney Mike ??

The Spec mix adhered veneer POLYMER MODIFIED MASONRY martor vm-04 website stated the mix is for easy sanding of cement floors. This supposedly has high strength and sealing from weather. I was figuring it should last at least 4 months with some Portland cement mix in with the martor. Please Mike would this work for me what do you think ??? Thanks fella. @@MikeHaduck

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have watched all you videos on chimney repair. My chimney is here to stay. I have a wood burning Buck stove in my fireplace and have a stainless steel pipe up the chimney. It has insulation around the pipe. My chimney top/crown is concrete and has a few cracks letting water inside the chimney. I need to know how to repair them. Chimney is in good/ stable condition, bricks are all good and attached. No loose mortar. Structurally sound. I can't get up there to get you a photo. Sorry. Can you please offer me much needed advice? Thank you in advance.
