“make sure you’re not letting your opponent get 4 in a row” thank you bro i kept letting my opponent get 4 in a row and i was so confused how i lost. you’re a life saver
- play the centre as much as possible - think ahead and build traps - form the seven formation - check the consequences of your move - block opponent from getting three in a row
There are some times where playing the center isn't going to help you win. Like if your first move is in the middle and your opponent moves in the space directly next to you, then playing in the center on your next move will make the game end in a draw.
Depending on if you go first or 2nd, you want to plan to win in a 3 or 2 spot from the beginning of the game, because if both players know what to do, it'll often stalemate until the last row.
I'm here because I need to win in a tournament in math class. I am the number 1 seed and acted a tad cocky so it is imperative I win. I've been training with the AI and playing practice matches, but your content is by far the most useful resource I have found. Thank you so much!
@jacksfilms I know that you are out there. You have been picking on the connect 4 padawans, but avoiding the real competition. I formally challenge you to a best 2 out of 3 games match. To accept, simply reply to this comment.
I like this. You should also make a video for Othello, or Battleship, or maybe branch into academia by sharing your knowledge on fields such as Math, physics, or even concepts from computer science.
Thx bro. Helped me a lot. Now i'm gonna go and flex my skills and if they ask me how I am playing so good and smart. I would show them this video and tell them to subscribe.
I haven't been through this video yet, but I understand it has been shown that playing in the center is a sure win for the first player (with optimal play). Either side of center is a draw. Playing other columns 1,2 or 6,7 is a loss for the first player.
Yep : ) You're probably thinking of Victor Allis' Masters Thesis on the subject : _"A knowledge based approach of Connect-Four"_ - Victor Allis (1988) (Vrije University, Amsterdam) There's a publicly accessible copy over at Stanford... web.stanford.edu/class/aa228/reports/2019/final106.pdf
my additional tips: -it is not always better to have more winning positions -the lower your winning positions, the better (apart from the first row) -count before you place your disk, and never assign your winning positions at rows 2,4,6, or 3,5. If you can't get the position at row 2, you probably won't get it at rows 4 and 6. The chances would be wasted. Rather, put them at 2,5, or 3,6. Count it right so that if one is missed, the next is waiting -making the 7 figure is cool, but smarter opponents won't allow you to do this, so be prepared to count your way to victory and, don't expect your opponent to be careless and miss your obvious traps -try your best not to allow your opponent to put 2 disks right after one another vertically or horizontally, these connected pireces lead to the 7 trap -sacrificing your winning positions is perfectly fine if you count the potential moves -if, after counting, you find out that you are the one who is going to place your disk into a new column and that you would face a disadvantage and may lose because of this... drop your disk into a column with odd number vacancies, then your opponent would have to be then one who place their disks first. All of a sudden you would be winning. ***the key isn't to create infinite number of winning positions BUT to create them strategically, at the right spots, and COUNT as you play you should always be FORCING your opponent to make their moves, but NOT praying that they wouldn't see a certain trap Good luck winning that family tournament!
It’s amazing how you learnt something from this video btw did I tell you that it’s impossible for someone to teach another person to get better at this game why because only those with experience understand it’s just like how a idiot will never learn but they will get better as they do more
Excellent.. I'm gonna build a large outdoor version.. it'll be fun to put the smokes on when we have summer time bbq's ..when we all CAN have bbq's..(with Cornhole virus and all) Thanks!
reading the board 1 - 7, 1 slot being far Left to 7 being far Right 1:34 Yellow should have played Slot 6. 1:53 Slot 3 or 6 achieve the same setup and outcome. 2:14 Red should have played Slot 5, stopping the forced trap for Yellow if Yellow followed up with Slot 7 as his next move, which would end the game. 2:33 Red can start to develop the diagonal by taking Slot 5 only after playing Slot 7 first, destroying Yellow's first trap. This means the only way Yellow can win in Slot 6 is if Yellow's piece is three spaces up, forming the Lethal Seven shape. So, anything said at 2:40 is all depending on Red not understanding how to survive with the correct follow-up moves and that means Yellow's Win is NOT guaranteed. 3:59 Red should have played Slot 3. If Yellow does the same move next turn, Slot 6 must be done for Red to stay alive. 4:53 The correct move is Slot 5 because is Yellow moves Slot 5 next turn, then Red moves Slot 5 to stop Yellow's Horizontal Row.
some tips were good for basics but u dont try and activate your traps just exert control over the match so that when it comes down to the last play. He is forced to play into your trap. Also using a seven shape doesnt give you an immediate win if your opponent has three in a row connecting to your seven so he will win when he blocks your seven. The entire game builds on finding connecting points between the circles and exerting control on the match. I recommend starting out with a double helix cuz its an aggressive start that can give you a lot of control
Hi keith how about 8X8 board? more room to play with. you also did not mention the odd and evens rule which is very important exspecially setting up a win .i play on a few games sites. If you fancy a game let me know.
Good point regarding odd and evens rule. I think I might make an advanced connect 4 strategy video and will definitely add it to that. An 8x8 board would be fun to play on! Do you know of a website that allows you to play with that size board? Also I would be down anytime for a game of Connect 4! I always love finding good competition

Have been playing for around a year and have decided to step up my gameplay. This, while a beginner guide, even had some tips helpful for me
You're not doing realistic moves for the "other player"
Nathan Garlick he’s playing against comp, it’s automatic
hes playing both players
He plays with comp in the last part, and he still won.
Because he is explaining basic techniques and setups
