A monolithic post-punk masterpiece. The guitars are so dark and heavy but the bass and drums are nimble and energetic. I would almost describe TOTBL as gothic, not like goth music but more in the sense of gothic literature. It recalls a particular time and place when the world was still paralyzed in the horrific aftermath of 9/11 and has such a sense of beautiful foreboding to it. I love Interpol's other albums but their first stands out as possibly the most well-rounded and musically consistent.
I'm 30 years old and I never gave this band a chance until now. I only liked one of their really popular songs growing up. Never looked into them. Now this is all I can listen to. There is nothing more relatable and fucking sad than this album. What a coming of age thing for me to love tbh.
I absolutely understand why Musicians like Radiohead and Interpol are underated, but it's a pity that People don't understand this kind of Music ( Lyrics)
Please don't compare the genius of Interpol with the blind luck and arrogance of Radiohead. They are completely different, in almost every respect. Radiohead are actually obscenely overrated in my opinion.
Radiohead underrated? Hmmm you don't know other sides of the internet or you don't know that Radiohead are too overrated, yes they are a great and unique band but unfortunately they are too overrated
And believe me, people are always going to talk wonders about ok computer even though we all already know that it is a good album, at least this one (interpol's) is not as overrated as ok computer or kid a
Radiohead is for hipsters... Interpol is for hipsters who didn't even know what hipsters were or that they were one, haha... In all seriousness (jokes about my early 2000s self aside) I think Interpol is on a different plane than Radiohead as well...@@mardex47gd31edit: and that Radiohead got their deserved notice (i.e. most people had at least heard of them at one point), but that Interpol never came close to that level of recognition...
Could you explain the why? I understand Interpol is underrated, but I never really thought about the why... other than that people suck and don't listen to good music? or, there is just too much good stuff out there? I am sure there are equally good bands I never heard of... and I am deep into post-rock and finding esoteric shit I never heard!
About ten years ago I was very depressed and I thought everything was awful and I told a friend that no new music was good and he said what about Interpol and I said just a Joy Division ripoff and boy how wrong I was they are great

It is incredible that this album 20 years later still sounds sad, lonely and urban at night, cold and icy like the night.
