The best thing about these basses (apart from the new colors) is that they come with some quality hardware. So, there's really no need for any upgrades (for me, the pickups sound just fine). I just wish they were a bit lighter lol.

i just ordered by j-bass from HB and i have decently good expectations as i have seen a lot of good comments - if HB considered doing a dingwall-style bass and a gibson ripper-grabber-g3 they would probably corner the market for people who don't want to drop 2k-3k minimum for the originals

Caramelised and roasted are one in the same. The process of roasting maple( or any other wood) is to caramelise the sugars present in the wood by introducing heat over a longer period of time. The time can vary giving different results but the heat must not get so high as to charcoal. The longer the time the darker it will become. It is possible to roast for longer periods creating "double roasted" this has a chocolate colour.I think that the term Caramelized is a short roast and would be lighter in colour to roasted.

Friend used to have this HB jazz bass that he swapped pickups with and did some work on the finish. Blew me away honestly, I liked it more than a American Fender from an shop. I think they perfected use of very good and simple designs and wood choices. Doing stuff with Basswood and maple and so on, woods that are soft and easy to work and cheap, perfect for the typical jazz/p bass stuff. And when they do get a bit fancy It's insane what they can pull out.
Like the HBZ 4000 or whatever they are called. Having Ovangkol wings and whatnot for 300€, stuff you would expect in a 700€+ high end stuff like Warwicks and whatnot.
Just hoping they will make lefty models more, I as a lefty been really eyeing on HB stuff but lack of lefty models is a bit dissapointing.

Hey Jonny! Thanks for this awesome review! I completely agree with the Jaguar suggestion, I'm just on the fence between the surf green version of this one (as the blue is already out of stock...) and the Squier CV Jag in sunburst colour. The latter one has been my target for quite a while, it's a shorter and lighter instrument, but I've never had a JB and everyone is just so hyped about this Harley that I also feel I need one especially for this price. Which one would you choose?
Also, HB just recently released a PJ series with these colours, but a P body, have you had a chance to try those? I'm super curious but there are absolutely zero hands-on reviews available.

The weight of these has always been their Achilles heel. I purchased one of their enhanced J's about five years back and the thing weighed almost 12lbs. I reached out to Thomann when these latest J's came out to see if they could send me a lighter one, being in the US returns aren't feasible for a $200 bass, but they said they are automated with the bass selection so they couldn't.
I believe I know why they are so cheap. It must be they ar laminating many pieces of wood to get one body and the glue is running up the weight. I almost thing they'd be better off going with less laminates and using basswood. These basses are so great for the price but I can't get past the insane weights.

If they were priced higher, they wouldn't sell nearly as well. Also, their weight has been their biggest problem by far, ever since they came out. It's most likely because their wood supplier gives them a good price but those planks aren't exactly "hand picked" so the weight is not even a consideration. They probably get those heavy planks for cheaper price anyway.

what would I like to see from HB next? free (overseas) shipping. this seems like a screaming deal (at first,) until you factor in the $71.68 shipping fee. I know their margins must be crazy tight, but come on. that's quite a bit for a "budget" bass.

Still a well specced bass for sub $300. I imagine shipping costs is something Thomann don't have a great deal of control over. When you put into context shipping a guitar half way across the world.... It's actually pretty good value in terms of cents per mile travelled.
