I remeber watching this with my family in the 70's on a Saturday night - a ham sandwich with pickled onions and cheese in hand, half the couch in my posetion (my brother had the other half), the sounds of my mum knitting and keeping count with the occassional 'sniff' sound when she chanfed pattern, and the cloud of smoke at maybe 2 and a holf feet as my dad light up his pipe and settled in for the night with a beer and a whiskey by his side. I always love Cameron Mitchell as one of the baddies/Goody-baddie and if only Gary Cooper had more ... Charisma! So glad to rewatch this as an adult and catch more of the nuance. Thank you SO much xxx
One of the networks had a weekly showing of TV first runs back in the mid-'60s. I think it was NBC later in the night on Saturdays. That's where I first saw this one. I remember how tired I was.
Watched this on TV sometime around 1961 or so on NBC Saturday Night at the Movies and could not get over the magic of the Bernard Herrmann score. I became a fan of Herrmann, Cooper, Hayward and Widmark in an instant.
Best Western I've seen in a long time, scenery was spectacular. Story was real, and actors perfect. Editing amazing, considering length of horse riding.
When movies, and actors, had real class. Gary cooper in High Noon, standing out awaiting his fate, the sheer horror in his eyes. One of my favorite scenes of all time. Pure class.
Greatest saloon scene ever. Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark drinking while a beautiful woman sings. This movie just had so much atmosphere. One of the greatest westerns.
yes. before all the spccial camera plates and special effects. real boating, beach, horses, people and of course acting. loved this movie. always have. thank you for putting out here to watch again for free too. God bless
What a Classic Film this really was. With an Excellent Storyline, the Cast was outstanding and the Cinematography was just Outstandingly Gorgeous too See. IT's always been One of My particular Favorite Film's. Thank You for Sharing.
Cooper has said some iconic lines in westerns like when the man ask " what does the sign say ," Cooper says , " it's Apache " . The man response, "what else " . Cooper " that's enough ". For us men that grew up watching great westerns like this one , this is a real threat !
How did they , casting, know to cast Susan Hayward. That is amazing. The audience , the men, had to be convinced that just by the sight of Susan Hayward, that they too would also fall for her. They were absolutely right ! Love at first sight. Me too.
Man that actress that plays the first bar girl has a most beautiful voice! Just just a timbre or or a technique but the whole package of control the way it resonates and she is almost in a smoky sound but not really almost a clean sound but not too much not too deep and yet floating while she makes it vibrate beautifully! I LOVE HER NOW! Even though she's dead she so sweet!
Good story well told, performed by excellent actors with lots of location shooting in Cinemascope. Even with the unrealistic Indians, an outstanding adventure film. In case no one else mentioned it, the cantina singer is Rita Moreno.
The fantastic music of Bernard Herrmann immediately puts us in the mood for exciting drama! I've seen this before but it's time to watch it again. Thanks for posting!
Superb movie. And calling it a western doesn't really do it justice . This is really more an ADVENTURE movie drama with western trimmings....and a VE RY good one.
Thanks bro for this movie great story and dialogues like, in the end It goes and somebody goes with it "" wow such deep meaning wonderfully acted. Too stand out Richard W. And Gary.C.
One of the rarest Western (wild west) movies where the locations are full of greeneries, pine forests, palm trees with hardly any desert or dry canyons....
Gary Cooper the ultimate Western movie hero. He died unfortunately when the westerns started becoming much more gritty (like this one). If you watch this then you know that John Wayne is nothing but an imposter; he made so many western movies and so many of them is like watching the Little House in the Praire. He must have been so jealous of Coops.
Once again the great Richard witmark his presence always leaps out at you,Cameron Mitchell not bad either,,Gary Cooper, well, less he does who cares??ye,all great actors in this film,,,I rest, Jim,cvw
Starting at roughly the 20 minute mark, those old town 'ruins' started to look familiar. Did they use the same location in the movie " The Magnificent Seven", I wonder ?
I have always liked this film. Great cast in stunning landscapes. The lurking menace of the Indians is very well done. My one gripe has always been the labeling of the Native American tribe as Apaches, when they are clearly not. An unknown tribal group would have played better.
Not the sort of film I would normally watch as my father is more the old western fan and I old noir which no surprise led me to Richard Widmark which led me here and I rather enjoyed it.
!" Apaschis,Y Actores, de México,..Cine!' USA. Garry Cooper, Con Sus 4; Participantes, en él, Drama; completan. La Pelicula: Garden of EVIL /,: Gran, WESTERNS;
Dialogue rather laconic from cooper Obviously widmark more eloquent But that's their different natures Mitchell nasty as ever! Hayward the temptress! What a crew!
People with questionable morality coming through in aces in the end always makes a great plot line.Widmark especially plays it with a special cool ala Steve McQueen.but he always acted with that calm ease.In my top 20 mainly for the ending.Little known 'Rocky Mountain" w/ Errol Flynn should be seen by all Western fans also for great build up and finale.
I watched this movie many times because its interesting, but something I didn't understand where is that lake at the beginning of the film and they landed as they are in Mexico but nothing else says where they are , this movie is incomprehensible !

Yeah!
My favorite Western film of all time starring Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark!! Even they were both good friends together.
I'd rather Apaches did not get shot that often left and right
You know that most of those Apaches were white actors with dyed skin right ?
Richard Widmarrk is absolutely perfect in this movie.
About right. A hand full of dirt.
From dust we came and to dust shall return.
Great movie.

Beautiful First Nation warriors, unfortunately killed left and right in battle scenes
But full,of makeup…
Gary Cooper and a Bernard Herrmann soundtrack. Wasn't aware of this one-- thanks!

A SPIRITUAL western!!! Loved ❤❤❤it !!!!
If you mean the spirit of Marx, you are correct.
One of the best Westerns, cast, direction, music, cinematography, Cooper at his laconic best.

What A Great Movie.Great Actor Gary Cooper And Richard Widmark.👍❤️
Very good dialogue, not a word more, but strike right to the head of the nail and leaving you a lot of things to think about.
Richard Widmark in all his movies from young to 90s seem to have a natural COOLness or SWAG about him - e.g the Alamo
Beautiful brought all the fifties back
