The concepts of altered firing patterns in the brain are key to changing some of the elements which contribute to chronic pain. You do a great job of putting this in lay terms. I too have a nail box and use it to model what is happening with body representations in the brain. Dealing with fear components is a spectrum. On one end are fear thoughts that are fairly amenable to education. On the other end is a full blown PTSD type pairing of fear associated with survival strategies millions of years old. I believe the extreme side of fear needs more specific education and processing with a skilled therapist. I had to recover from altered brain patterning and chronic pain connected to PTSD. Understanding the influence of fear really helped my recovery. But, it was a long road to actually dismantle the fear linked to my trauma.

Rachel Katz And how did you go about dismantling your fear?

That's pretty person and situation dependent. Take a look at a process called Somatic Experiencing and see what's there on their site traumhealing.com. It's very good work especially in the care of a good practitioner.

The "nail box" is called: image captor. I use it w/autistic kids who, like all kids, love how it feels, sounds, looks. Etc. You can buy different sizes and colors. You can get plastic pins which are much cheaper but kids don't like them as they don't have the feel and sound of real pins.

I love this - thanks, (though I'd not seen a nailbox before). I'm actually quite sure some nearby ear territory in my brain, has moved in on (or is trying to help?) a shoulder/arm problem. So this is especially interesting ... to visualize. Now - if only I could visualize them .... to move back over. I must work with/on that arm more - I'd switched sides when use of it became too difficult.
