    In the actual raid to get the bombers airborne the carrier was going full speed against the wind and they stripped as much weight as they could from the planes including their machine guns. We owe that generation so much for the sacrifices they made for us.

      Including that it was basically a suicide mission because most of them were killed or captured by the Japanese.

      Also in the raid, they went after mostly shore installations - the most important targets were infrastructural. Yes, they had orders to go after Capital ships like Carriers and Battleships, maybe cruisers, if there were any - and they did at places like the Yokosuka Shipyards, since those are essentially larger and concentrated military installations. But there it is, they were aimed at shipyards, not necessarily a ship in the water - the surest way to disrupt the Japanese war economy was to hit buildings which would collapse in on themselves and destroy the infrastructure it housed, pumping substations, control substations for all kinds of facilities from Military to Commercial. So that's where most of their targets were, not floating in the water, but sitting on land (albeit much of it near water, since that's where many concentrations of such facilities were necessarily constructed).

    Fun fact: In 1963, a series of experiments were done to show that a C-130 could land and take off from an aircraft carrier. Of course it was a Forrestal Class carrier (far bigger than the CV-8 Hornet), and the trials were considered so hazardous that the pilot (Lt. James Flatley III -- USN), was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his accomplishment.

    Of all the things in the movie "Pearl Harbor" that just infuriates me was using the Doolittle raid as way of fixing the love triangle. Bad enough they had Alec Baldwin playing Jimmie Doolittle, but you cannot take P-40 pilots and put them in a B-25. The brave men who flew those B-25s were crews who had been flying together since the war started.

      While this never happened in the Doolittle raid. Their were times when pilots flew different types of planes. Mostly because they didn't have choice.

    My great uncle, who passed away not to long ago..was a Doolittle pilot.
    He escaped beheading, but weighed a scant 98lbs after returning from Japanese hospitality.
    Bet he would have loved to pilot any modern aircraft on that day, given the choice.
    He did live long enough to see many much more capable planes fly...no thanks to the Japanese.

    • @christosvoskresye
      @christosvoskresye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have to agree with the narrator. The raid on Pearl Harbor was unexpected because the position of the Japanese carriers was not known, but just as much because there was no state of war; but the Doolittle Raid would have been considered impossible, because carriers like the Hornet were not designed for that kind of plane. If you like, the raid on Taranto deserves some consideration, too; it was arguably more effective than Pearl Harbor. The Israeli airstrikes at the beginning of the Six-Day War also deserve mention, though a WW2 newsreel could not know about those!

    • @Skiamakhos
      @Skiamakhos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christosvoskresye eeeeehhh... It was *kinda* expected. Dusan "Dusko" Popov was working in the years before Pearl Harbor as a double agent feeding the German Abwehr crap information from a network of ficticious spies he said he was running in neutral Spain. He was reporting back to the British intelligence service, and taking misdirection stories from them to feed the Germans. The Germans approached Popov with a questionnaire from the Japanese, which was asking about the British naval attack with torpedo bombers and dive bombers on the Italian navy at anchor in Taranto, from carriers over the horizon. Popov put two and two together and approached the Americans, specifically J Edgar Hoover, telling them in no uncertain terms that the Japanese planned to attack Pearl Harbor. Hoover, according to Popov, "sat on the information". It is interesting though that on the day of the attack, the carriers were all out at sea on exercises. One would be forgiven for thinking that someone (maybe Hoover) had thought, "America doesn't want to get involved in another world war. Public opinion would crucify any president who took us into it. But if we were attacked on our own soil... That would be different." Having the carriers out of harm's way meant they had their casus belli but suffered no great strategic loss. If you can gett a copy, I highly recommend Popov's memoir "Spy: Counterspy". He's one of 3 or so real life spies that Fleming knew & based his character James Bond on.

The AC-130's left-mounted guns are a lot easier to aim if you fly a circle around the ground target with the tip of the left wing pointed at the target. The weapon system is not designed for making straight-line strafing runs.

    One effect of this raid was a marked increase in radio traffic among the Japanese navy, and most of it about finding the hornet. The American code breakers took advantage and broke the navel code.

    How about one of those wonderful "what if's" and have a few AC-130 variants go back in time and do the Doolittle raids?
    Maybe one plane per target with a limit of one or two circles (manned) using guided munitions and the big gun on one pass and the Bofors and Gatling or Bushmaster (depends on what mod) for cleanup on the second?

    The actual Doolittle raid was an act of excellent bravery.
    I have a recommendation for everyone: watch the movie "Midway".
    In the actual raid, the weather was horrible at sea. I can't remember the weather over Japan.
    The original bombers didn't have the fuel to return to the carrier they launched from and actually were ditched over China.
    Is there anyway to modify the aircraft from DCS? for example, could you modify an A-10 to carry a dozen Sidewinders? (Strictly for use in WW2.) Could you modify a B-29 with laser guidance pods (and carry laser guided bombs)? Could you modify a C-17 (or C-5) into an AC-17 (or AC-5) with GAU-8/A Avenger cannons? (My dream planes!) Could you modify a B-52 (or an AWACS) to carry several dozen AMRAAMs and Sidewinders? (Even better, how about a few dozen AIM-54 Phoenix missiles?)
    Anyways, Merry Christmas, everyone!

      They never intended to land the planes back on the Carriers. If everything went as planned they had a safe disignated landing strip for them in China. But since that little patrol boat saw them they left 10 hours early causing half of the pilots to ditch into the sea and the other half crash landed in contested Burma.

    Is thrust reversal modeled on the DCS C-130 and variants in DCS? If so, I imagine it would be useful in landing on a Wasp class sized ship. I live fairly close to Straton Air National Guard base in Upstate New York, home to the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Gaurd, and have seen them land many times. I am not sure how it is on most C-130s, but the C-130s used by the 109th (specifically the LC-130H Skibird variant) need the thrust reversers for their mission landing on ice and snow in Arctic and Antarctic locations. Incidentally, a LC-130 with their props in reverse thrust is probably the loudest I have ever heard any aircraft.
    Now, as an alternative for this scenario, consider this. A modern F/A-18E/F is capable of carrying up to 8,000 kg of ordinance. Obviously not particularly far, but that is significantly more than the 900kg each Mitchell carried in the Doolittle Raid. Even a more standard load of two sidewinders and four 450kg would give more lethal capabilities with its standard configurations. Some changes might have to be made based on what modules are available, but it could make for an interesting "what if" in a "Final Countdown" style.

    Returning to the carrier was a bit silly. while I know that you guys had landed a C-130 on a carrier before, one problem you skipped, was that the carriers wouldn't have stuck around to recover the Hercules. Because there would have been the little matter of the Japanese fleet coming out to intercept the carriers...and since the task force commander knew tha, t the task force would have "gotten the hell out of Dodge"...and when the C-130s returned, the carriers wouldn't have been there.

      I somewhat love that USS Shangri-La was named after the Doolittle raid, after FDR said that the strike came from "Shangri-la", not releasing the name of the carrier who delivered the strike. Both Hornet and Shangri-la have skills that utilize B-25sband have them in their skins in Azur Lane. Love the little details in that game that get me to look up histories of ships and try and find those little details.
