Today, we resurrect a project that has been sitting for way too long, my 1997 Lexus LS400 with over one million miles on it. Famously owned by Matt Farah and driven by nearly every automotive journalist on the planet, it has the most history of any Lexus LS400 on Earth. @@TheJohn8765 I have a W140 Mercedes, the model this car was meant to compete against directly. It's a fantastic piece of engineering and I like it better than the LS400 strictly because it has a lot more character and frankly the interiors cannot be compared, but as far as reliability goes it's not even close.

These 1st and 2nd gen LS cars are some of the greatest cars ever made. I sold mine with 320k miles for $500. And the sad part was it was running like new, just an extra car. I’m still kicking myself.
Even with 320k miles, theres a car similar with 3x the price for sale in my area😭

They should, but they won't even sponsor the bad dashboards, ABS units, or timing chain tensioner in the LS, their most expensive car

The Lexus LS is NOT a boring car, it’s the greatest luxury car ever made, Toyota engines (especially their V8’s), are bulletproof.
And for a car that’s done over 1.6 million kilometres, it still runs well.
As someone who has one, it is a pretty boring car but the lore and build quality is pretty fun to experience

I worked as a Lexus Tech for 7 years and im here to tell you that those cars are made to last the test of time in almost every aspect. All you guys are so Leary to push buttons and operate things in fear of them breaking and then shocked when literally everything works besides a power steering issue.

The LS400 was my favorite car of all the cars I have owned since I passed my driving test (first time) in 1975. I exchanged my crysler grand Cherokee for it. I have been driving lexus ever since. Unfortunately due to the side effects of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy neck and throat cancer I haven't been able to drive. I love that you are going to save it. I have been following your TH-cam channel for a long time and your enthusiasm is infectious. Looking forward to seeing the final result. I live in the UK but I seem to be more connected to the US since I was 17 and all being well I will be celebrating my 70th birthday on 8th October 2025 in New York and your welcome to come and have a beer. Strip the motor to the block. Let's examine every single bearing. Then put it back together with the original internals, but all new bearings, gaskets, rings, and timing set. The old warhorse deserves it.

I hope my 2007 Accord makes it that far. Currently at 663,000 miles and climbing, original engine and trans and running great.
I am blown away that a lexus (toyota product) hasnt rotted out with those miles!
Our most current toyota disaster has been with my wifes 2009 highlander (its been a handful since 88k).
Its maintained on schedule but now, with 112k, it will no longer pass inspection due to frame rot (even with undercoatings).
Im done with toyota (except the 4 runner or land cruiser).
May have to check out lexus.

Good, I have a 1991 with the wheels and brakes off of a Series 2 and I love that car. It's on Eibach springs and it handles really well compared to stock. People love to ride in it because it is so smooth and quiet.

I had a 98 LS400 I've had over 40 cars but that one was easily the most reliable comfortable and cheapest to run. We owned it for 10 years used it daily apart from tyres and service item it cost nothing, we sold it for more than we paid. I miss that car..
I just bought a 95 Lexus LS400 with 240,000. Just finished replacing the valve cover gasket and currently getting a new alternator and planning to replace the suspension system piece by piece. I rather do all this than go out and buy a modern day sedan.
I'd still love to see a 100% restoration of this "historically significant" (to the youtube car enthusiast community) like The Car Care Nut did to an LS430 on his channel. Complete disassembly, cleaning, repair, detailing, etc.

I had 3 LS400s and loved them all, I only sold the last one at 340000 miles because Toyota were delisting new parts. Some of the best cars ever made, not boring unless you like the excitement of breaking down.
I have a 1998. Bought it with 180k miles. Now has 250k. Been through a couple alternators but never left me stranded or unable to find parts.
This was my first car in the US. I drove that thing through high school,college and 2 years after graduation. It had close to 400k miles before i sold it.

You can't kill these cars. I towed around 20 cars, 60 miles with a rx350.
Smoke out exhaust is likely power steering idle up valve when it fails will feed power steering fluid through vacuum and radio and climate control is under hood fuse box large square fuses to left of box should be second one up
Japan makes amazingly durable cars. You've got this million mile Lexus and then there's the indestructible Toyota Hilux that was on Top Gear, need I say more.... 😜
