So glad it’s getting restored, the car deserves it. These 1st and 2nd gen LS cars are some of the greatest cars ever made. I sold mine with 320k miles for $500. And the sad part was it was running like new, just an extra car. I’m still kicking myself.
Quality-wise, it 100% crushed the Merc's of the era. I'd be super happy to buy one in decent nick. Like the 300D Merc, it won't die unless you totally neglect it.

It's a fantastic piece of engineering and I like it better than the LS400 strictly because it has a lot more character and frankly the interiors cannot be compared, but as far as reliability goes it's not even close.
The LS400 was my favorite car of all the cars I have owned since I passed my driving test (first time) in 1975. I exchanged my crysler grand Cherokee for it. I have been driving lexus ever since. Unfortunately due to the side effects of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy neck and throat cancer I haven't been able to drive. I love that you are going to save it. I have been following your TH-cam channel for a long time and your enthusiasm is infectious. Looking forward to seeing the final result. I worked as a Lexus Tech for 7 years and im here to tell you that those cars are made to last the test of time in almost every aspect. All you guys are so Leary to push buttons and operate things in fear of them breaking and then shocked when literally everything works besides a power steering issue.
How long do the 3.3L lexus rx330 last? I got 210,000 currently on mine want to know how much longer I'll get out of it and what issues I kight have with it?
@@Sam21998 they're all really good vehicles. can't stress the importance of regular maintenance enough. ive got a 2004 is300 with 270,000 on the clock and you can't feel it idling. change the oil every 3-4k miles and service other fluids once or twice a year depending on my mileage. oil, trans fluid, and monitoring leaks is always prudent. oil change intervals on the fwd vehicles is top of the list. they tend to sludge in the rear valve cover bc the engine tilts back slightly. So, oil change intervals are gonna be your biggest proponent on the 330's. it gets costly if they sludge.
The Lexus LS is NOT a boring car, it’s the greatest luxury car ever made, Toyota engines (especially their V8’s), are bulletproof. And for a car that’s done over 1.6 million kilometres, it still runs well.
They spent almost 20k on repairs then drove it cross country up and down. Sure they're good for half a million not a million in real conditions. Nobody spends 20k on a 2k$ car

I just bought a 95 Lexus LS400 with 240,000. Just finished replacing the valve cover gasket and currently getting a new alternator and planning to replace the suspension system piece by piece. I rather do all this than go out and buy a modern day sedan.
I am blown away that a lexus (toyota product) hasnt rotted out with those miles! Our most current toyota disaster has been with my wifes 2009 highlander (its been a handful since 88k). Its maintained on schedule but now, with 112k, it will no longer pass inspection due to frame rot (even with undercoatings). Im done with toyota (except the 4 runner or land cruiser). May have to check out lexus. With an insane amount of miles this 400 is impressive!
I had 3 LS400s and loved them all, I only sold the last one at 340000 miles because Toyota were delisting new parts. Some of the best cars ever made, not boring unless you like the excitement of breaking down.

Good, I have a 1991 with the wheels and brakes off of a Series 2 and I love that car. It's on Eibach springs and it handles really well compared to stock. People love to ride in it because it is so smooth and quiet.
When I was 17 my boss had a identical Lexus. He got wasted at a party and needed a somebody to drive him home. We got him inside then took the car back to work, eventually. We treated his new car like a rental for a couple hours. We filled drews Lexus with blunt smoke and returned it when it was almost out of gas.
i have this exact same car at home, same colors, and gold emblems but with LS430 wheels on it, 220k miles and its as smooth as this one is. its my hooptie. needs some love, i keep debating if i want to keep it or not tho. its a second car for me.

I had a 98 LS400 I've had over 40 cars but that one was easily the most reliable comfortable and cheapest to run. We owned it for 10 years used it daily apart from tyres and service item it cost nothing, we sold it for more than we paid. I miss that car..

I’m not sure about your LS400, but I thought my 1998 GS400 was leaking oil at first too. Realized it held oil and had oil pressure. Resorted into looking at other places, and behold the famous 2nd gen issue. Rack and pinion power steering leak. Terrible terrible leakage from the old rack and pinion. Still has power steering though 😮😮
Most common leak issue is the power steering reservoir o-ring leaking on and killing the alternator and misting the entire engine bay with black power steering fluid film. First thing I fixed when I got mine... other than occasionally resealing the valve covers I haven't had any other major leaks.
@@v12alpine interesting, from the sound of it that’s a pretty serious leak. Mine just runs underneath to other steering and suspension components which isn’t ideal but isn’t gonna kill my alternator. Though the power steering is definitely eating all the rubber in my suspension and steering
@@w_swim rack and pinion is another issue fure sure, fortunately mine never got bad enough to change it out (just wet). When the power steering resi or pump goes the alternator is right under it and poof.

I owe a 1997 Lexus LS400 Coach Edition with 75k original miles. It looks and runs like new, beautiful Jade color. Thinking of putting it on action to see how much I can get for it since they only made 2600 or something like that of the coach edition.
I stole one of these at a ceiling fan job I was doing a few years back. Wound up offering the guy $800 and he took it. Had to rebuild the ecu and gauge cluster, but turns out he was telling the truth... 121k on the clock. Drove her for about a year, currently parked awaiting a power steering system overhaul, and now I'm wondering about my differential bushings myself LOL but solid car. Even the factory stereo sounds amazing. Blew the sunbleached subwoofer though listening to rtj ;) Msrp in 1995 was $56k
Hi more power to you .. I have the exact same car with 220K miles on it .. drive straight .. But I think ecu capacitors need to be replaced.. not sure .. the key gets stuck in the ignition and I am unable to get it out without disconnecting the battery 😢..
Just goes to show, when the Japanese make something to rival the Merc S class, which the LS400 was, they do it well. I doubt that there are many S Classes of the same year on the road with a Million+ miles. What would make it far more interesting is to understand the service history of the car. Whats been changed etc in its lifetime. Other than needing every rubber component replaced underneath, and a little bodywork, shes not bad.
Japan makes amazingly durable cars. You've got this million mile Lexus and then there's the indestructible Toyota Hilux that was on Top Gear, need I say more.... 😜

@@v12alpine do you know if it’s a progressive thing with the alternator getting leaked in and going out or is it like an instantaneous problem where the next thing you know the car won’t turn on

I owe a 1997 Lexus LS400 Coach Edition with 75k original miles. It looks and runs like new, beautiful Jade color. Thinking of putting it on action to see how much I can get for it since they only made 2600 or something like that of the coach edition.
I stole one of these at a ceiling fan job I was doing a few years back. Wound up offering the guy $800 and he took it. Had to rebuild the ecu and gauge cluster, but turns out he was telling the truth... 121k on the clock. Drove her for about a year, currently parked awaiting a power steering system overhaul, and now I'm wondering about my differential bushings myself LOL but solid car. Even the factory stereo sounds amazing. Blew the sunbleached subwoofer though listening to rtj ;)

I have the exact same car with 220K miles on it .. drive straight ..
But I think ecu capacitors need to be replaced.. not sure .. the key gets stuck in the ignition and I am unable to get it out without disconnecting the battery 😢..
1988 Toyota Camry with the Transmission button, ECT "Electronically Controlled Transmission" aka hold gear longer and lockout overdrive. haha.

Just goes to show, when the Japanese make something to rival the Merc S class, which the LS400 was, they do it well. I doubt that there are many S Classes of the same year on the road with a Million+ miles.
What would make it far more interesting is to understand the service history of the car. Whats been changed etc in its lifetime. Other than needing every rubber component replaced underneath, and a little bodywork, shes not bad.

Japan makes amazingly durable cars. You've got this million mile Lexus and then there's the indestructible Toyota Hilux that was on Top Gear, need I say more.... 😜
Should take the cluster out and send it to Lexus before it flips. It is a Toyota however and didn’t they offer a new car if reached a million miles?
