Your excitement and enthusiasm is contagious, Danny. Please keep the videos coming! I am getting a new respect for old cars and their preservation thanks to channels like yours and a few others I watch on TH-cam. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos that share with us, your passion as well as your progress on your projects.
reminds me of when I first started my old 1958Bel-Air. Smoke should go down once all the oil in the cylinders is burned off and everything warms up and becomes free. I bet the Imperial I am working on will smoke just like that lol
I was patiently waiting to see this old gal fire up! Hopefully the smoking will calm down after she gets back in the groove, I used a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in a old engine that was smoking from sitting for years and it really helped stop the smoking and revitalize the seals and gaskets. Congratulations Dan!
D. J. did you put it the tank or in the oil. My comet is doing the same thing after sitting for several years with only occasional starts and never smoked before? Thanks
Jeff Portman, I put a quart in with the oil change, minus one quart of oil so the crankcase wasn't overfilled. Also I put some in the gas tank, about 2 pints..filled gas tank with fresh gas..It really works, breaks down sludge and varnish even helps with sticky valves and piston rings..it's not real expensive either...
Jeff Portman, if you going to use Marvel and drive the car, I'd drive it about 500 miles then change the oil and filter again..and the marvel in the gas tank will help your fuel system and combustion chambers and valves. I know old timers that swear by Marvel Mystery oil..
I had a mazda b2200 pickup that smoked up the block every time I started it. some old man told me it was the valve guide seals. I put marvel mystery shit in it and it stopped smoking
Wow cooool let that baby run a while. It more than likely needs valve guide seals they dry out or rot after thirty years. Would love to see run long enough to burn the oil off the manifolds. I hope it quits smoking after all the oil burns off the pistons and the intake and all.
Right at 1:38, Coldwarmotors would be superimposing spinning letters that "fly out at you" saying "It's a runner!" CONGRATULATIONS! Keep up the good work!
one of my dream cars great to see it running again it should clear up after u run it a few times the rings always stick when left sitting my Riviera was the same way
Nice to hear it come to life again. Did you change the valve seals, I am sure they are shot. The left side seemed to have more smoke coming from under the car before it came out the pipe than the right side. That was a load off of your mind! Glad it is running! Bernard
It nice to see a video of starting an old Shaker up but I really think you should be most concerned with oil pressure and making sure things are handling those first firings and such. Anything can run. An engine with every rod bearing wiped out if it still turns can run, that don’t mean it’s going to be any good. Unless you live in Oregon or Arizona it going to have to be good to make it to Cal. Good luck, I hope it keeps loosening up and clearing out. Looks like a pretty good car. 4 door Hardtop, little on the rare side. It doesn’t have big rust hole in the floor, that is access plate for getting to bolts for taking transmissions out the bottom. He has it off. Not sure why you can see the what looks like torque converter from the top. I don’t remember any having hole up on top. What transmission does it have?
Rusted out, no bed floor, no brakes, weak clutch, gotta use an external fuel system, Mickey Mouse home made shifter.. What's not to love, it's an ol Chevy. In my youth, I used to screw around with these things, and flip um
Good job Dan. Glad to see it running. I will bet the smoking will clear up after some run time . Sounds pretty good ,considering how long it sat, and how short of a time you let it run.
Like most of us that have been subscribed to (Dan The Man) for a while, we know the process that he follows. Dan knows his stuff. Nice job Dan. We all know that it would smoke like it is on fire. It will take some run time to free stuck rings, lifters, valves, and such. It would be a good idea to do a fresh oil & filter change before running it very hard. the big unknown is now known. It Runs!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats my brother.
Wow! I love it! You have to forgive my ignorance on cars that have been sitting up almost forever.., but I read in one article a few years back where the author said never try to start a car that has set up for over an x-number of years., citing that the oil would be jelly and ruin the motor., and they need to be properly flushed and new fluids replaced immediately. This is the 1st chance I've had to ask someone who actually does car restores and stuff. Have you ever had that problem?

That's a great feeling when a motor starts up after not being run for years. Good job keeping the old cars alive.
Nothing beat a Chevy!What a beautiful sound.

D. J. Tanner, Thanks, I thought so and will try it tonight! I am a jerk for letting it sit!

Sounds great 👍👍👍 it was worth the wait to hear that beauty run man
Good job. I really like that you didn't give up on that engine.
Maybe the smoke is in part due to bad valve seals.
I had a mazda b2200 pickup that smoked up the block every time I started it. some old man told me it was the valve guide seals. I put marvel mystery shit in it and it stopped smoking

Nice to hear it come to life again. Did you change the valve seals, I am sure they are shot. The left side seemed to have more smoke coming from under the car before it came out the pipe than the right side. That was a load off of your mind! Glad it is running! Bernard

Nope. Maybe in real cold climates that happens, but none of the warm climate cars i get have jelled oil.
@ImTheDaveman You're probably thinking of even older cars, maybe in a 1912-1928 Model T that's been sitting for 60+ years you'd find that.
Nice Congrats !!
So cool good job.
I knew he could make it run. No problem.
OOHHOO! This is the best time after buying and old car! The first start up!!
