    Placed my first Hoss order last night and was able to pre-order seed potatoes. Tried growing potatoes for the first time this fall, it was impossible to find any seed potatoes, I found 1 small bag of purple potatoes. Tried growing in a potato grow bag and in a trash can. The grow bag did much better than the trash can method. Any other ideas for folks that don't have large plots or traditional long rows? I also ordered a 162 cell tray to start my onion seeds. I am still very unsure about when to start my onion seeds and when is the best time to transplant them to the ground. I live in zone 6b. Love that you are a family owned company centered on Faith and doing people right and selling American made products!

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The grow bags are probably your best bet for potatoes on a small scale. For the onions in 6b, you'll probably want to plant in early spring, whenever that is for you. I would start the seeds about 5-6 weeks before you intend on getting them in the ground.

    As a side note... my Christmas present to myself is a medium sized high tunnel... with plans to add to it as soon as I get it up and running... probably going to end up with about 80 feet to begin with. tired with fighting with mother nature on the weather... going on in on controlling everything!

    I like those seed collections. If you can get those tins in that size, but taller so you can put the seed packs in there like a file in a file cabinet, I'd really like that. You could put a whole season's worth of garden seeds in there and even categorize them. It could be a garden in a can. If you provide that, I'll definitely buy it.

    if you are like me & have the hearing impaired words turned on, you can't see any ofhing that you might have on the table through the words. If you could hold things about shoulder high before placing them on the table, that would be great.

    Great show as usual. Potato question: this past year I didn't cut many of the seed potatoes due to limited space. I got almost no large potatoes, lots of teeny ones. Does cutting up the seed potatoes matter or was it something else I did wrong? This was particularly the case with the Austrian fingerling variety.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Travis, help me a bit with Parthenocarpy. Do they need pollinators and/or would a cross pollination effect the seedless tendency. Is it different depending on the type and variety; i.e. cucumber vs watermelon?
    Thanks in advance

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't need pollinators. Cross-pollination shouldn't be an issue unless you were saving seeds.
      For seedless watermelon, it's a different game. You're planting a tetraploid seed with diploid pollinators every 3 plants, which results in a triploid (seedless) watermelon for the tetraploid varieties you planted.

    I'd love to be able to grow lettuce. I too live in zone 8b and have tried black seeded simpson, red sails and green salad bowl but I just can't do it. Nobody in my family wants salad and wraps in the winter. Summer is the time for salad but I can't grow lettuce in the summer. Is there a way to store it long term or semi long term? This is off topic but aside from lettuce I can't grow cantaloupe either. The whole family loves cantaloupe but it's my kryptonite. They will look great but a week or so before harvest they rot. I've tried Crenshaw melons too. Same result. A couple weeks before they should be ripe they just rot and die. I've tried harvesting them upon the first sign of rot but they aren't ripe. I've tried elevating them off the ground to prevent rot. Not sure what else to do. Don't know if it's something in my soil or region. Maybe I have some sort of strange microclimate even though I'm in zone 8b and should be able to grow them. I can't grow sugarcane either because my soil is too dry as I'm high up on a sandhill, way above the water table. Any other suggestions? I can't imagine my preplant fertilizer being the problem. Are y’all getting any more Texas legend onion seeds this year? I live in TN 7a but live in the bottom of a holler, my daylight is delayed around an hour. I’ve got some candy onions but want to try some short day onions too. I don’t want onions comin off in the middle of summer if I can help it. Keep it up boys. Thanks abunch!!!

      We were hoping to get more, but not sure at this point. I would highly recommend Cougar as a more than suitable replacement: hosstools.com/product/cougar-onion/

    You guys deal with seed companies, maybe you can answer a question I've been wondering about for a few years. Since sweet corn seed is so uneven in size and shape, why don't they pelletize it. The seed is so expensive, it would save me a lot of money if doubles and triples were eliminated. I have trouble with the Earth-way and the Hoss seeder dropping doubles and triples. If I make the whole smaller to avoid this, then I get a lot of skips. I plant around 50,000 sweetcorn seeds every year and it gets really wasteful and expensive to have to thin out the extra plants.

      Most of the big seed corn producers are selling the majority of their seed to large-scale farmers, who use expensive vacuum seeders to accurately plant the seeds. The backyard gardener/small-scale truck farmer portion of the market is very small compared to the commercial side. So there's probably not enough demand to justify it. Also, a pelleted corn seed would be pretty large, almost the size of a small marble. This would require a much larger hopper on a walk-behind seeder.

      They said it in the video. It’s one bandana, just two colors.

    Too many commercials in here. I'd rather watch a 1 or 2 minute commercial at the beginning rather than the video being interupted every few minutes

      Unfortunately, we don't control the ads. YT does have a premium version where you don't see the ads.

      @@gardeningwithhoss - I don’t see any adds, because I pay the tiny fee for premium, and it’s worth it, lol.
