It's easy to forget how complicated the rigging was on these ancient ships. You make it look easy but I can tell that you put a lot of time in to get it right. Watching you manipulate the tiny pieces is hypnotic. It doesn't look that hard until your finger comes into view and then the actual size of the parts becomes apparent!
For ONE sail there were literally -depending on the size- dozens of different ropes to manoeuvre the sail ALL IDENTIFIABLE EVEN INTHEDARK For a big man of war with 74 gons and about 17 or 18 sails Maybe a little confusing. But the sailors and officers had no problem with that Amazing

I have learned so much from watching your work. I am a kit model builder and am currently working on the Occre HMS Bounty. I have been reading several discussion groups and am trying to decide how to go about the rigging. Some say to build the masts and hang the yards and sails before mounting them on the ship. Others say to mount the masts first to the ship and then proceed to the yards and sails. I would love your opinion as to which way you think is best. Also, I saw how you shaped the sails using potato starch. Can you share the recipe of water to starch? You have made my ship building much better than it would have been on my own. Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
Thank you very much! I do the starch concentration by eye - it's about half a teaspoon of starch per glass of water... But you can add more starch during the brewing process if you don't like the thickness... I prefer to tie everything possible to the yards, so that later the rigging ropes can be run faster, but you still need to tighten everything directly on the model...
Hello everything is fine? Your workers are beautiful! I am a craftsperson! Please answer me: Is there a standard for line diameter thicknesses? Successes!
Depends on the type and size of the vessel. You can calculate for your scale, for example, according to David Steel's tables. Or from similar rigging books for modellers that have copies of these tables... You can check my video library and find something suitable for you. David Steel Books: Issue #122...
Hello Dear Olha, Perfect Ropewalk and a joy to watch. Is all that Ropewalk original as it should be on the ships? Greetings from the Netherlands. Gerard
Theoretically yes, because the sailors had to take the sail away somehow quickly! But in practice, I never found information how to rigg the buntlines. My thoughts were to put 2 additional cleats on the bowsprit, but I'm not sure about that... So what I don't know, I'd rather skip, but if I find a source of information, I can always add buntlines. This is another reason why I like wooden modeling - you can rerigg your model like a real ship. And this, by the way, is another reason why I neglect the instructions from the kits. Because there they tell you to glue the yard to the mast or to tie a flat knot, because this is the fastest way to "sculpt" a bunch of models. But this makes it impossible to repair, maintain or make changes to the model afterwards...
@@OlhaBatchvarov i sail on San Salvador. A 1542 Spanish galleon. Next time I’m aboard I’ll get pictures of her sprit’sl bunts and send them to you. It’s been really cool to watch your rig of this come together because it’s virtually identical to my boats! Again, amazing as always

This is amazing! Great work! So many details! Just a small question; Is there a way to make the sheet more tight and make it seem it is under tension? Because all the other lines, halyards etc, have some tension, but the sheet does not. Maybe with some CA glue you can make it rigid, to imitate that there is more tension on it than there actually is?
@Darryl 603 - This is my standard explanation for all lower sails)))) As if the ship had just been tacked and the sailors were in the process of pulling up the sheets... But there is one boring way. Maybe I'll feature it on my next model! I want to sew sails for the HMS PEGASUS because they are not included. You need to sew wire into the tablings (it is better to find a thin steel one, because it holds its shape well, even if you tighten the sheets, the sail will not fold into a pile...
Ships were very often re-rigged also due to damage... But the quality of the ropes themselves was also important and how the crew takes care of them...

I impregnate the ropes with CA glue and therefore scissors cannot cut thick ropes. And it is best to do it with a knife if there is access to it! Therefore, nippers are a great solution in hard-to-reach places for a rope that has become hard as a wire from glue...
