Geoff you know what you are talking about! I did (as a proj engineer) several projects for oil mill clients, mainly crushing rape seeds and sunflower but also coconut. The screw indeed ran in a barrel as you said. The barrel consisted of parallel steel bars fixed in a cage. The barrels themselves were tapered. The oil was squeezed through the narrow cavities between the bars and collected.

I believe that is the central part of an expeller press used to press edible vegetable oil from oil seeds e.g. rape seed, coconut, sunflowers, palm kernels etc. Normally the screw is made of surface hardened steel. Oil seeds in contact with the rotating screw are quite abrasive you know!
Not that it matters for a screw shaft, but that I could hear that surface finish from here! With a follower steady rest like that, i have to assume the reason the cut was so slow was just due to the machine's power with such a broad cutting surface?

Thats the most wasteful and rediculious way to make screw conveyor flights I've ever seen. You can find the flight dimensions online for how to cut flights, bend and weld them all together onto a rod. So why not do that and be correct?
If you look at the finished shaft the flights as such are tappered so it's for compression, if they were making an augur for moving stuff then I would 100% agree.
