    The people here complaining about the water being left running--please educate yourselves on the importance of infection control and prevention. Nurses and doctors are aware of all the nuances about it and are trained specifically to leave the water running. Any attempts to turn the faucet off with elbow or soaped up hands invalidates the entire handwashing session. This is how it's been done for years. You'd be surprised at how surgeons meticulously wash their hands. With knee-controlled or foot-pedalled faucets however, it completely erases the need to leave the water running, though not every hospital has implemented it because it means extra costs.

    From the daughter of an RN, the granddaughter of a WW II Medic and the stepdaughter of a surgeon: One thing nobody is teaching is unbelievable to me. When you go to surgery you scrub under and rinse those nails!! NOBODY ON TH-cam OR TV BRINGS UP GETTING UNDER THE NAILS OR KEEPING THEM TRIMMED AS LOW AS IS COMFORTABLE. This is not the time for manicures and long nails. Try getting out in the dirt in your garden and you'll see later just how much work it takes to get the dirt out of the creases and under your nails even with a great nail brush. Imagine the virus and bacterial particulate matter that is invisible to the naked eye. It's also not about how LONG--though that is important. It's about getting every single place as well and rinsing thoroughly.

Even standing under the shower for a few minutes is NOT waste unless you're doing it to just simply waste. I too abhor water wastage but I also abhor vomiting and diarrhea. Paying close attention you can see the actress put the water stream on a little more than a trickle. There is some wastage, yes but way more water will be wasted if you contract gastroenteritis, not to mention loss of work productivity, time and money spent at the doctor's office/hospital and money spent having to buy rehydration therapy and 💊 at the pharmacy so I'm going to go with a little water wastage. However, this scenario can be improved my installing motion sensored or foot controlled faucets. It's something to think about when building or renovating.

    • @BedCrunch
      @BedCrunch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No. The faucet in the video can be very easily shut off by using an elbow. Thus, wastage is prevented. Probably the reason WHO didn't go for this practice is that many faucets are not built to allow this possibility - then you of course have to use the hand towel.

    • @hsmith1180
      @hsmith1180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      there is no reason to keep that tap running. I was raised in a region where water is scarce & it's very simple to keep the tap handle clean or keep your hands away from the handle. In this case she need only use her elbow instead. This is reprehensible. That was more than a trickle & in any case that's still a large amount of water being thrown away. In this age of better knowledge there is ZERO excuse for WHO (of all people) to recommend "leaving the tap running".

Many public restrooms have since converted to automatic sinks that don't require you to touch a handle for the very purpose of helping with conservation. In older bathrooms, simply push the handle down with your elbow prior to drying your hands. And don't discard the paper towel immediately when finished if exiting requires touching a knob. Use it to open the door, then toss the paper towel in the nearest trash can.

      Yes, you can use one of the single-use towels to open and close tap while washing.

      Keep in mind this video is five years old.

    So you don't actually have to scrub while under the water as long as you lather and scrub before turning on the water?

      Well, common people aren't nurses or doctors who need to be clean all the time since they're working in a clean environment.
      You can still clean your wrist from time to time or during the shower.
