  • The first of two rehearsals before for the main event. Trooping the Colour this year will be 1st Battalions Irish Guards.
    Major General Ghika CBE Officer Commanding the Household Division.
    The Household Division consists of seven regiments, giving rise to the division's motto of Septem juncta in uno (Latin for 'seven joined in one'):
    Household Cavalry (composed of the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals)
    Foot Guards (composed of the Coldstream Guards, the Grenadier Guards, the Scots Guards, the Irish Guards, and the Welsh Guards)
    As a former Coldstream Guard, who has done his fair share of “Troops” I was very proud to be there and observe this fantastic spectacle.

    Standing nearby is always an option, but even to get to the rehearsals is a rare privilege. The spectacle is unrivalled. Yet some people insist on holding full conversations (not just making the odd remark, which is obviously a different thing) while the march-on is taking place. Can I have their places please? I would honour them more...
    BTW, the square of the massed bands seems to be 20x13=260. At the Trooping in 1985 there were 20x18= 360. Horseguards is difficult to fill with sound anyway, but it looks like even these most famous bands of the Army have been cut savagely, let alone the absolutely butchery that has affected the rest of the Band Service (no more bands of the Paras, Engineers, Cavalry, RCT, Royal Artillery, and so on and so on and so on). Well, I know the Army is tiny these days and we should be grateful for what we still have. Indeed I am. But it is NOT the same, sadly.

    • @_Mikes_Life
      @_Mikes_Life  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The army should be 120K minimum, it’s kept the dole queues down for years.
      When I joined up there were guys who joined up because of the miners strike, their families couldn’t afford to feed them, so they joined up.

    • @sidpheasant7585
      @sidpheasant7585 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@_Mikes_Life of course high tech reduces the need for a large army, but often there is no substitute for numbers (not least when we have crises at home and they say "call in the Army to help out"). So I'm 100% for your 120. Now can we just find a few million more Brits to agree with us that this really matters?
