Rutting Season Chaos on Wicklow's Top Hiking Trail | Ideal for Beginners

  • The Spinc is a popular hiking trail located in Glendalough, County Wicklow, Ireland. Glendalough is known for its stunning natural beauty, including lakes, valleys, and dense forests, and the Spinc offers a great opportunity to explore this picturesque area.
    The Spinc is a well-marked hiking trail that provides breathtaking views of the Glendalough Valley, the Upper and Lower Glendalough Lakes, and the surrounding mountains. The trail is a part of the Wicklow Way, a long-distance walking route in Ireland.
    Difficulty Level: The Spinc is considered a moderately challenging hike, suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. While not extremely difficult, it does involve some steep sections and uneven terrain. There are many routes to chose from which make this area excellent for beginners. It's important to wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for changes in weather.
    One of the main attractions of the Spinc is the panoramic views it offers. Hikers can enjoy stunning vistas of the two Glendalough Lakes, the ancient monastic site of Glendalough, and the surrounding mountains and woodlands.
    The Spinc trail is approximately 9 kilometers long, making with 380 metres of elevation. It is a relatively short hike that can be completed in a approximately 3-4 hours. It's ideal for a half-day outing.
    Visitor Center: Glendalough has a visitor center that provides information about the area's history, geology, and hiking trails. It's a great place to start your visit and learn more about the local environment. The carpark is free to use which is fantastic and gives great access to the nearby monastic site. There is a carpark at the upper lake which costs €4 to park your car and has toilets on site but I would recommend parking at the visitor centre if at all possible.
    The Spinc trail is generally accessible to most hikers, but some sections can be steep and challenging. The main thing is to take your time, and be prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear. Additionally, check the weather conditions before setting out on your hike.
    As with any natural area, it's crucial to follow the Leave No Trace principles and be respectful of the environment to preserve the beauty and ecosystem of Glendalough.
    The best time to hike the Spinc is during the spring and summer months when the weather is milder, and the landscape is at its most vibrant. However, it's a year-round destination for those who enjoy different seasons and weather conditions.

    I don't think there's any greater sight in wildlife, especially in Ireland and the UK, than the deer rutting season. Just so wild and awe inspiring to see. Nature at its best. Thanks for the video Jason, enjoyed that.

    Having walked the Spinc loop for the first time about 3 weeks ago I really enjoyed this video, thank you. Despite the loop being well signposted and nigh on impossible to get lost I somehow managed to do just that, ending up on top of Lugduff SE! Didn't mind at all though, stunning views and thrilling to be so close to so many deer (unperturbed by my presence), so beautiful. Had lunch up there before making my way back down to the boardwalk to continue on. Deffo plan to go again - may even go back up Lugduff and on around the red loop next time. Well done on picking up so much litter. Will aim to bring an extra bag and do the same myself on future walks, rather than just tut-tutting as I walk past! Thanks again.

    You're right Jason, it is stunning there. It's an artists paradise - with a potential painting around every corner. Thanks for taking us along with you mate. Can I ask you something? In your experience, do the hiking poles help when you are walking? I have trouble with my knees, especially when going downhill and are considering whether or not to get some. Cheers

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There some beautiful spots down there and the area around the round tower was really beautiful. I can honestly say that I wont ever go hiking without at least one hiking pole. They really do make a big difference.
      They make crossing uneven ground and streams so much easier, they have saved me from falling and rolling my ankle countless times. They take the pressure off the knees going downhill and give you something to push down on while going up.
      Get yourself a cheaper set and give them a good go. It will take some time because they can be awkward at first. I can't speak more highly of them

    Great to find your channel. Loving the content and your presentation. Described you to my Mrs as this real nice Irish lad that respects the country side and has an infectious laugh. Brilliant. Anyways back to this video. Looks like a lovely place, those board walks are a brilliant idea, don't see much of that over here. I'm getting on now days being 62 and lived most of my life in big towns. Since my mid 50's I took up walking all over Scotland and England and never once came up close to a stag, always wanted to. But by the sounds of it they're something to stay clear of, do they attack? Cow's, now that's another thing. I do everything possible to avoid them. Anyhoo as I say, love your style, respect for the country and cheery attitude. Big thumbs up from me. ATB to you and yours. Dave aka wackyswanderings 👍

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks a million, I'm delighted to hear it. Yeah the board walks are very handy, it's there to protect the ground from the large amount of hikers on the trail. This trail has been closed resently for 3 months. They'd just started to remove and replace the board walks so I'll have to head back to try out the sexy new boards 😆 The stags are harmless 90% of the time, once you keep your distance they won't bother you. I came withinn 8 feet of one once, we surprised each other. He was a huge animal with a full set of antlers, absolutely stunning. He just jumped out from the woods on a quiet country lane one morning. On this particular hike it was rutting season which means the deer are breeding so the males have a surge of testosterone. That can make them a bit more aggressive. I'm raging I din't have my mirrorless camera, I would have got some lovely shots of them all.
      The cows, I completely agree. I avoid them wherever possible. I don't trust them. Thanks again Dave, hopefully you might stick around for the next video. You won't have to wait long as it's up tomorrow 😄 Have a good one 🙌

    Good job on the video. Strange they not charging for parking at the visitor centre normally are and is always full in the day. I tend to park at the free overflow car park opposite Laragh GAA pitch. Walk up under the woolen mills arch into the forest and about 10 min walk to the visitor centre Or go left and up the hill to a logging road and right for better views. The “cave” you was talking about was a old mine entrance.

      I'm not entirely sure what you mean but I take a hiking pole with me every time I head out, even when I'm down in the woods. I have degenerative disease in my back so the poles help to navigate uneven ground and take some pressure off when I need it. I bought the Leki's because they are aluminium with a cork grip and they weren't stupidly expensive. Cheers for watching man 👍
