My first bike was a V-Star 950. Bought new in 2009. I'm 6'2" at over 300lbs. I love this bike! Added handlebar risers and Ultimate seats with a backrest. Comfortable, nimble, and great power! Okay, I added a bunch of other stuff for aesthetics, like V&H Big Radius pipes, chrome, engine guard, cone filter, coil cover, and other stuff. Designed and machined my own passenger floorboard adapters. Still have it, just over 10,000 km. Will trade wife and kids before this bike.

Jacques Johnson big beginner? Get a KLR 650 or any UPRIGHT bike. The seating position on cruisers WILL get you killed. Trust a guy who easily has 3x the miles under his belt than this guy does. He is a squid. Never ever listen to a squid.

I'm glad I started on an upright bike. The maneuverability saved me a few times. Cruisers tend to be more sluggish with the input response. Not all cruisers of course. Take the Harley riding course. They will start you on a 520lb 500cc bike for training. It will help build your confidence.

Lessons learned from a 6'7" dude weighing over 300lbs for most of his riding career.... 1. Budget for suspension. As mentioned in the video, basically no bike out there is made for your weight off the factory floor. I rode stock suspension for years, but when I finally did pony up for some suspension work, the difference was night and day. The bike feels much more in control and responsive to you, as opposed to the rocking horse effect you get when you weigh more than double what the bike was set up for. 2) Be honest with yourself when you're sitting on that bike as to how well it fits you. Yes, some bikes can be modified to get a bit more legroom or raise the clipons (talking more sportbikes now, obviously), but these are incremental changes. If you don't fit, you don't fit. Thankfully, with the explosion in popularity of naked bikes over the last few years, finding comfortable options has become way easier.

@@dejanjanjic125 for larger guys a 950 is manageable. However with larger bikes it is important to know about push/pull stearing, this is not something to learn from a youtube comment if you dont know about it you need to research it.
With smaller bikes you can throw your weight around and cheat your way through turns but with a large bike its weight can get the best of you then you, when someone says the bike just wanted to go straight this is what happened to them.

6'6" 250lbs here. I ride a Kawasaki KLR 650 and it's got a lot of real world potential to accommodate a big fella. 1 thing to think about is it's flat bench seat. You can slide back to whatever seated position works for you and not be forced into the standard driver position that almost every other bike has. I raised the handlebars and lowered the footpegs and can ride this thing standing up straight.

I didn’t like it at first, to be honest, but I was kind of stuck with it and 6 months later I was very sad to sell it. 900 cc is really all I needed on Maui and it even worked on the gravel road out to Hana. My current BMW R1100R is grand for the leeward side of the Big Island and needs less maintenance. But wouldn't be nearly as comfortable if I didn't have a good beginner bike. I've never owned a bike below 1000cc's. I'm 6'1" and currently weigh over 250. My first bike back in the '80s was a Gold Wing GL1100. It was faster than a scorched rabbit and barely anything on the street could touch it. It wasn't a full dresser so I was spared that weight and I weighed less back then, too.
I currently ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad 1600 and I'm very happy with it. I also own a 1500 Nomad, but they changed enough about the geometry and such with that bike that the 1600 suits me better. I wouldn't have any qualms recommending a Nomad or a Vulcan 900 to a larger rider who was new. If it's your first bike just don't get something new and expensive, it will bother you less if you drop it, and get engine guards.

I don't know what Kawasaki was thinking, but that rear suspension was a kidney punching, spine cruncher. I used to flinch when I saw even small hitches in the pavement in front of me. I guess that is how they keep them so cheap. I put Michelin Commander II tires on it and a Mustang seat, and that helped a little bit, but it was still too harsh a ride for my (mature) body. ;) Maybe Yamaha has done a better job.

Yep i gave $4800.00 for it. 3 years old and 9000 miles on her. I have my back rest though. Just got her set up for this year's season. Better air cleaner, vance & hines exhaust and a complete fuel commander set up and i got about 15 more ponys out of her. I have a 77 Triumph T140V and a 78 Kawasaki KZ650Sr and this 2012 Yamaha xvs950 vstar. The last bike I'm buying off my buddie and that's a 2010 Harley Davidson Road King. A nice 1970 CB750K would be cool. Me and my buddies all ride different bikes. Al has a 2013 Yamaha Raider 1900. Tim a 2008 Kawasaki Vulcan. Dale a 2014 Triumph Thunderbird 1600 i think. Glenn a 2010 Yamaha 1100 vstar. Mark a 2015 Indian Roadmaster. Top has a 2018 Harley Davidson CVO road king. Dave a 2020 Kawasaki verses 650. Dennis a 2019 harley 1200 iron. Jerry a 2008 Indian chief 1800. Tom has a 2010 Victory not sure which one as its all customed out. Nikki has a Harley 2008 Road king. So were a Pretty diverse bunch of guys.

It's a shame that Yamaha left the cruiser market. Granted, the market (and customers) are dying. I have a 2007 Stratoliner, and for my puroposes, best bike ever built. Used ones are now becoming scarce and so cheap I may pick one up as a donor,. Yeah, right, a donor for a Yamaha - It will still be running in 50 years.
Still have a Tenere on my list.

If your 6 feet or more buying a beginner bike is often a mistake. Sportsters and shadows just don’t work well for us. My suggestion is always the same...Kawasaki 900. Nice full frame like a softail without the huge engine

I am 197cm tall, 100kg big guy. Today ive bought kawasaki vulcan 900 classic. It feels ok to sit but still a bit to small for me. My knees just above the tank. When iam tryung to turn it hurts my knees. Greeps punching it. So i need to raise a handlebar and do smth with the seat and pegs. Overall feels ok. Hope i will fix everything by next season

I got a Suzuki 650 that was too small (S40) then got a Suzuki 650 that was too tall (DL650) then got a bike that was perfect. (Honda NC700X) Until I upgraded the seat & now it's too tall. They should just make adjustable height seats! How hard would that be? Bicycles had them for a century!

You can start and stay on a 950 forever. I took a shadow 750 from NV to FL in about 4 days, they're fine bikes at that size.
That said, I hated it and it was underpowered, Honda needs to bring back statelines.

I got a new old stock 2015 Vstar 950 for $5999 recently, and as a guy who is 6 foot tall, and 395lbs, it's not bad, but upgrading the saddle is a must, I couldn't go more than an hour without being in a good amount of pain, I put a Mustang touring saddle on it and have no complaints.
Given, it's not fast, and it doesn't like going over 65-70 for long distances.

I can tell you for sure these bikes cruise at higher speeds with no problem. These are high revving engines, different than harleys. Ive cruised at 80-85 in highway with no problem! The majority of 950 owners will tell you the same thing 👍

My son is looking to get into riding. He is around 5'-8" tall and weighs in around 250 pounds.
I am not sure where to even point him.
I started out riding when I was young on dirt bikes.
Due to life I was never able to get him into riding.
So this is all new to him.
He drives truck for a living so he understand the clutch and shifting.
Where would be a good starting point?
