  • Glasgow South East Foodbank in Govanhill opened in 2011 and currently feed between 200-250 people every week with numbers steadily increasing.
The food bank is supported by local churches and faith groups, local community groups and businesses and of course by the general public through permanent collection points in local supermarkets, weekly and ad hoc collections and financial donations.
Manager Audrey Flannagan gave us a tour around the facilities on Glasgow’s southside which fed 11,500 individuals last year and is expected to serve in the region of 14,000 people this year.

I remember when I was young in the seventies the supermarket use to bin all the dented tins and bruised fruit and veg in the big skips at back and people use to raid them at night I didn’t understand then until I asked my parents why people did this they replied those people were struggling and needed food to give their children I remember feeling so sad and every harvest festival I took a box full of food to school and now I give to the food banks

A barometer for poverty reduction will be a commensurate reduction in food banks - this is such a sad reality of in our great country 😮

Respect from China 🇨🇳 for the people trying to hold everything together. Why is wealthy Britain in such a mess? Here food and rent are much cheaper. We don't have as many luxuries, but people get fed.

@@Mr.Patrick_Hung I live in the Uk and was born here. I think you have made a very fair observation. It is not uncommon to see luxury items/cars/homes in Britain yet we also have people living with extremely little food/money shelter. The gap between the rich and poor is significant here. I am sure it is similar to different magnitudes in other places. My family had no money growing up. I have only succeeded in earning money because of free university education given to Scottish students studying in Scotland. Without education, life in the UK is extremely difficult.

Now the 1 and only issue I have with this is. How many people going to FB are using them but still spending money on smoking (roll up or pack of 20) or still drinking) while going to a food back for free food. If you have money for Booze or Cigarettes, over feeding your family whether you man or woman. U don't need a FB. If you don't have the money go without the cig/booze.

People like you just stigmatise all those in dire poverty. It is no wonder many people actually feel too embarrassed going to one so don't go, or use other apps like Olio which is more discreet. A lot of them are referred to by agencies. It may come as a shock tp you but some people actually are teetotal, don't have kids or do drugs

Soup would be a choice? If you are hungry you eat anything. My mother use to have a pot of soup on the cooker. In winter is was potato soup, in summer it was vegitable. Does anyone know how to make a pot of soup in Glasgow anymore? My mother always gave a meal to tramps that came to the door, she never turned anyone away. We would walk out of our district so my mother could get a bone for free to make the soup. She called into a butcher's shop "Do you have a bone for the dog?" If they gave it to you for the dog it was free, if you asked for a bone to make soup they charged you. At that time we didn't have a dog. Looks like people have to learn from previous generations. I remember a woman who grew up in the Great Depresion, saying her mother always had a pot on the cooker, sometimes it was soup sometimes it was stew. Her mother went out everyday and bought day old vegitables and anything else she could afford. What ever she got went into the pot. She said we ate it because we knew there were people in our building that didn't have anything.

I wondered as well why many people were going for processed food in these docs, rather than buying bigger quantities of whole foods like rice, dry beans, lentils, vegetables and fruits, etc. which are much cheaper than processed. BUT someone in a documentary said that the food banks in the UK are only giving processed ready to eat foods because the recipients cant afford to use their gas or electric stoves anymore. So they mostly eat sandwiches, or soup from the can. And I imagine many in the UK don't have a back garden where they can light a little fire to cook a pot of soup on, though some might and they would definitely benefit from doing so. I'm from the US so I only know what I hear from these documentaries, but wishing you all the absolute best across the pond. I'm worried and saddened for the elderly who may die this winter :( I hope somehow the government comes to its senses and sets up some emergency action- otherwise they are just marching the old and ill to their deaths 😓
