You do need to be registered to fly a drone. So asking for drone ID when someone looks like they are about to fly a drone is well within their remit. They would be well within the law to arrest you for failing to provide your ID after you have actually flown it like in this video.

You dont need to provide proof of your operator id unless the police office has reasonable grounds to suspect that you have or will commit an offence.

An operator ID being visible on the drone would also satisfy the legal requirements. The police have no lawful right to detain for refusing to show ID. Police can only detain for a stop and search, for a breach of peace, or when searching a property. Every other time, they have to go for an arrest - which requires more proof to carry out, and after which ID must be given. Police detain people because it means less paperwork and most people think that the police are acting lawfully.

The hostile and unpleasant attitude and behaviour indicates that they are thinking of themselves as some sort of judge when their only job is investigation and service to the public. I think that a significant factor in this is the fact that they are trained to tell suspects that they are being held on 'suspicion' of an offence when they do actually have sound evidence because it is only in court that the veracity of that evidence can be established, this leaves them thinking that 'suspicion' alone is enough, it is not!. The repeated insistence that their concerns are legitimate is of no concern to you, as you repeatedly tell them you are breaking no laws and are under no obligation to explain anything, every time you say that they insist that you must prove your innocence, the most outrageous perversion of English common law. All they can manage is more of the same copwaffle, in the end one of them suggests you might be an auditor, if that his what he really thinks why is he making any fuss at all or does he want to make an exhibition of himself and if so why?. There are no other places where such drones must not be flown and no restrictions anywhere on filming apart from those exclusion zones therefore no licenses are needed, please try to remember photography is not a crime!.
