  • @SouthernFlyer1011
    @SouthernFlyer1011 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Well this is it, the worst train disaster of all time.
    It's sad to think but there was absolutely nothing anyone could have ever done to stop this from happening it was just nature being nature.
    I think this must have gotten the same level of respect as the Tangiwai disaster considering both were caused by nature and occurred on a holiday

  • @JohnDavies-cn3ro
    @JohnDavies-cn3ro ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Sadly I will never forget this for two personal reasons - on the morning it happened a friend said to me as we entered church, "There's been a bit of an earthquake in the Indian Ocean." With hindsight, the greatest understatement ever made. At that time we had no idea just how serious the tragedy was; the full news hadn't reached us. The other occurred a couple of weeks later, at the office where I worked. An important payment hadn't been made by another company - it was found awaiting action on the desk of a secretary who'd gone to Sri Lanka for Christmas, and never came back....... the ripples from that tsunami spread as far as central England. "No man is an island."

    Somehow, in all the news and devestation this flew under the radar. I don't recall the papers in the UK covering it much or maybe it was different papers, I just remember the pictures all over the front pages but not too much about the train. I knew the train disaster but not all the other details. For some reason I thought a second train was swept out to sea, though that may have been misreported at the time however. 1700 wasn't even that high compared to some places or events but it is still absolutely incredible, and to think that could happen again within our lifetimes. Nobody knew in 2003-2004 that the plates were gearing up for a 9.0 quake and what it would entail. Not train related but the tsunami itself is absolutely incredible as to how far it traveled and just how many countries were impacted directly and indirectly by the tsunami. The images of the beaches afterwards are burned into my brain and they are absolutely haunting, so are the images of the flood hit towns and industries as well. This was truly a once in a lifetime event but I feel like with the way things are going, it may well happen again. At least the tsunami warning system came out of this for the Indian Oceanwtsusnami
    EDIT I thought I read somewhere that people were on the roofs or clinging to the sides before the tsunami hit, though again I'm not 100% sure on that claim.
    Also I thought you did a vid on Ufa, I know someone else did and I don't remember who, but I thought you did though as well?

    I don't want to spoil anything about the wreck, but I will tell you something else about the background.
    So, this is 2004. The Indian Ocean was about to have the first and the worst tsunamis ever. Countries like India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have been affected by the situation. The reason why it happened for obvious reasons was due to the high magnitude. The Earth's crust violently shook the Indian Ocean waters leading to a Tsunami on the South side of India and Bangladesh. But the entire of Sri Lanka. Not to mention, it happened on Christmas Eve. Which lead to the worst train wreck in history.

      Agreed. My heart would sink to the earth's core. Can't imagine the PTSD the helicopter crew felt

    Intense descriptions of death and destruction set to *Thomas the Tank Engine Music* and being played straight kinda...removes a lot of the value of what is being presented.
