i agree that shakkanhou is the best for building with, it has the advantage of being "human-scaled" (like feet/inches) and the advantage of being base 10 for easy calculation (like metric), the best of both!

「立って半畳寝て一畳天下とっても二合半」は私の座右の銘です。貧乏人のひがみですが 笑
人間基準と言えば、１フィートが１尺にとても近い、３尺がほぼほぼ１ヤード、そしてどちらもしつこく使われているというのが面白いですよね。

やっぱり、人間が使うものを作る事がほとんどなので、体を使ったスケールの方が使いやすいってことですよね。
「天下とっても二合半」を鴨長明の方丈庵からとって、「立って半畳寝て一畳天下とっても４畳半」という言い方もあるそうです。
そういう人になりたいなーと思います。

the meter is now defined as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299 792 458 of a second. Although you're original story of the origin is one I've heard.

It seems to be as you say.
I believe it was redefined that way so that it would be the same length everywhere in the world.
