It's hard for new viewers to appreciate just how stunning this was in the theater. CGI was still a new thing, the images on the screen were huge, and the surround sound made you feel as if you were going to be torn apart by a t-rex.
Fun fact: It's because of this movie that Peter Jackson realized he could make a movie with monsters and creatures in it.... he ended up making Lord of the Rings.
When this was shown in theaters, they had already come out with "surround sound". Not only could you hear the dinosaurs steps, the speakers in the theater were all around you, and you could actually feel the vibrations. It was some scary stuff.
This movie kinda ruined my life. lol I was told that for the rumble effect when the water vibrates they had to invent the technology to transmit that low boom. Apparently that low note wasn't possible before except in live performances. That's why now you hear the cars go by and the subwoofers shake everything. I'm sensitive to noise so having those stereos in my neighborhood makes my life crappy. So every time I see the water in the cup shake, I remember how cool it seemed in the theater but then not knowing that it would be the end of peace and quiet.
I remember all of that!! I also remember that this was the first movie that featured SUVs... before that, I didn't really see that many around. This movie catapulted the success of the Ford Escape. One of these days, I need to read the book. I also remember getting really freaked out by the T-Rex! "Where's the goat?"
@@HeatherDeweyPettet definitely read the book, it definitely fleshes out some of the details and there are parts in the film I wish were in it. You will be surprised who actually lives in the end and who does.
In the novel it's even worse, they make it very clear that he cheaped out at almost every possible stage. Hammond was a far less sympathetic character in the novel.
That T-Rex scene…no one had ever seen anything like that in a film. It was intense, loud, the theater was shaking, the acting was incredible and the effects were just mind blowing!

Found out that the part where Dr Grant is struggling to secure his seatbelt in the heli because he has two 'female' fixings, but then just tied them together, was a deliberate reference to the dinosaurs being all female but managing to breed. "life finds a way".
"welcome to Jurassic park." that moment was not only one of the greatest moments in this film, but also a defining moment in movie making. Because in that scenic wide shot that follows, we got to see the full power and possibilities of CGI. It changed things forever.
Having been lucky enough to see this in the theatre when it was first released, I love that every time we've been to Universal Studios in Florida since then, whenever you walk into the Jurassic Park section of the theme park, you pass under that JP arch and the music starts up, and you get that EXACT feeling that you had watching that exact scene. It's such a cool thing.
I think they would love the Princess Bride. After Jurassic Park & Shawshank, they could do with some light-hearted fun. (They found the Goonies scary!) 🏴☠👸

I can't believe it has been almost 30 years since this came out. I remember seeing this in the theatre. When the T-Rex roared, everything shook! I was blown away by the realism of the special effects - I could almost believe dinosaurs had actually returned. Even by today's standards, the dinos still look good.
It still looks better than any of the recent sequels that rely on cgi and an oversaturated polish where you lose the sense of realism and grit. New ones look "produced", while the classics have a more sincere feel. Wish I was born 10 years earlier so I could have watched it in cinema

Most of them are made by TH-cam "experts" who are baiting for views and discussions rather than staying scientifically objective (aka they have the latest data, but they use their own subjective interpretation of that data and act as if it means anything they say is scientifically accurate - but often times they neglect a lot of context that people who actually study paleontology and biology would know and incorporate into their opinions and suggestions). The main way to determine if a "historically accurate JP" vid is a hoax, is to simply see how often the content creator is featuring self doubt and questioning their own findings. If they don't do this at literally every step of the way, and with no further explanation as to why not, then they're likely a hoax who's just farming views and engagement.
I worked at the theater at universal studios Hollywood when this came out. They did a huge production. I got to sit in on one of the premieres, when the 1st dinosaur appeared on screen, everyone gasped and started clapping. It was a breakthrough in computer graphics.
Jurassic Park isn't really an especially good movie, the story is really stupid, the acting is meh, and the dinos are laughably overpowered for what they are, but Spielberg absolutely knows how to hit the emotional beats. That reveal of the first dinosaur out on the plains, the rising music, the crescendo as it literally causes a mini-earthquake coming down... Few moments top that in any other movie. And he managed to get quite a few similar moments (of other emotions) out of this movie.
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 They don't focus on it in the movie but the dinos in the park aren't 100% copies of the originals. The designers may have embellished some traits more than others to make them appear more like what we would expect a dinosaur to be like. At least that's the in-universe excuse.

There is depth in the lunch conversation. Attenborough's performance about the flee circus is well done. There is suspense, wonder, and horror throughout. It is a perfect movie.

Rob, as the helicopter flew away from the island, you said "Thank goodness for regular birds". Ironically, within a couple of years of this movie's release, scientists determined that modern-day birds are, in fact, direct descendants of the dinosaurs, and not merely of the flying dinos, either. In the almost 30 years since "Jurassic Park" was released, it has become commonly accepted as fact, that today's birds are, basically, modern dinosaurs, evolved. It has also been discovered that author Michael Crichton, a medical doctor himself, got it wrong about the poor eyesight of the Tyrannosaurus Rex; that beast could see you perfectly fine, whether you were moving or not. And Velociraptors, for all of their intelligence, brutality and strength, were only slightly larger than today's chickens.
Many people have replicated that look by using resin, I think theres a guy here on TH-cam that recreated Hammonds cain with the amber handle using I think bamboo and resin.
You guys know where the error in this movie was?? Well, lets consider the billionaire old man ,who kept saying, "I've spared no expense", Really John? Then why the HELL didn't you have a BACKUP company, for the security system, in the event there's an unhappy employee,like Dennis, and he shuts down the security system, you should have to call a secondary back up company, to give access, before shutting down the security system! Viola. That would have kept the park opened for everyone to enjoy, but that flaw, of course, created the movie. The old man certainly spared some expense because a secondary company , probably not that expensive, on shore somewhere, should have been required as a double back up, before shutting down the fences.

Michael Crichton is an amazing storyteller & having this movie done by Steven Spielberg made it one of the best movies of all time! To give you an idea of how long you've waited to watch Jurassic Park, the actress who played Lex is 42 today & little Tim is 38.😳
Micheal Crichton has written some brilliant books & several of them have been made into great films including Timeline (one of my favourites), Coma, Westworld, The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Sphere, Rising Sun & The 13th Warrior .... such a talented storyteller ....

It struck me as I was reading that this would make a good movie, it could be easily transcribed into a script, and I think he probably did it that way with hopes of a future movie. When they movie was announced, I was vindicated. Perhaps I just got lucky but those were certainly my feelings at the time.
The dinosaur you asked about is a Triceratops. Which literally translates to three-horns-on-face. It was a herbivore that could get to be 30 feet long, 10 feet tall and weighing in at around 26000 lbs.
Fun fact: Triceratops was the only herbivore species that not only _could_ beat T-rexes on one-on-one battle, but did it often! That why Triceratops has been my favorite dinosaur since I was a kid. 🤓
In the book, the triceratops were eating the African violets but it was throwing them up which is why it wasn't found in the poop. If you are into reading the book is fabulous.

I get the whole "No, not the cow" / "No, not the goat!" But.... I mean, whether it's a velociraptor or a shark, or an eagle, predator's are gonna hunt. Even Fluffy the housecat will kill chipmunks and whatever else gives it an opportunity.
Lol. True but, honestly, that doesn't mean people wanna watch it happen. My wife was a vet tech and, as a result, we fostered a lot of dogs and cats over the years (as well as a goat, a rooster, and various other animals). When we had indoor/outdoor cats, I knew the cats were out there hunting birds and rodents and whatnot but I def didn't want to watch them killing one. Nature is, for lack of a better word, natural but I don't need to be standing by rooting it on. So, yeah, knowing it and spectating it are two separate things. I will never understand why people like to watch RL videos of animals fighting and/or killing other animals. I mean, live ya life but watching RL violence just isn't for me, dawg. The world is rough enough without making the darker parts of it your entertainment. With movies, I personally don't care as much bc it obvs isn't real (horror movies don't bother me at all for the same reason) but, idk, I think it's kind of sweet that J&A have enough empathy that it's hard for them to watch even the fictional depiction of a cow or goat getting munched. I mean, hell, they even felt bad about Newman and the bloodsucking lawyer getting eaten. That's a level of niceness and sweetness you don't run across too often and I'm here for it.
I saved several chipmunks from my cat before she discovered they were delicious. They play 'possum. I remember staring at one when it's eye opened, and upon seeing a lumbering primate staring down at it, promptly jumped up and ran away.

When my husband and I were dating he wanted to see this movie near where I live because in his city they had smaller screens, our city we had bigger screens and all that Dolby digital surround sound all around the theater hearing all those creature noises around us! O my goodness! I must say this movie is popcorn tub worthy for us!
It's a Steven Spielberg movie, the special effects are top-notch. I recommend as films to comment "Alien" (1979) by Ridley Scott and "The Thing" (1982) by John Carpenter, two classic films that you will like a lot, ha ha. Saludos

I was managing a cinemaplex in Pittsburgh when Jurassic Park opened in June of 1993, and the public response was unbelievable. I had not seen the likes of this since the Star Wars movies a decade prior.
My sister and I were a bit too young to watch this movie when it originally came out, but I remember seeing the commercials for the movie, toys, video games, and other merchandise. It was really hyped up!
“They’re like animals that aren’t prehistoric! Thank goodness. They’re regular birds!” You mistook the ending. When you see the birds flying at the end and Grant sees them, he smiles. Not because he is happy to just see birds but because he is adamant and knows that dinos have evolved into what we simply call birds today. It goes back to his first scene in the film where his paleo colleages laugh when he posits that certain kinds of dinos have evolved into modern-day birds. Grant’s smile at the end is less “Thank god, no more dinosaurs” and more a bittersweet, “They’ve always been living among us, all this time”. I’ve always wished this film dealt more into that.
@@robertsmith3883 No, he got it exactly right. The goal was for the audience to feel a sense of relief, after the the high-tense moments they just wittnessed. It's the end of the movie, the time for philosophical reasoning was at the beginning of the film. You're looking into messages that aren't there.
Hammond was played by The late Richard Attenborough, brother of Sir David Attenborough, easily the greatest naturalist in history. His nature documentaries are amazing, and he just released a five-part miniseries on Apple TV+, “Planet Dinosaur”. An incredible look at dinosaurs and their behavior. For a new perspective at the opposite end of the spectrum I highly recommend it!
Richard Attenbourgh was a knighted lord. He pretty much founded modern Britsh Cinema. Ad well as a good actor he was a great director too. Won an Oscar for Ghandi

One of the most incredible movie theater experiences in my entire life. I grew up loving dinosaurs and prehistoric planetary life. Seeing this on the big screen was magical.
This is my absolute favorite movie in the entire world, I can watch it over and over. I know every scene and every line. I own it on VHS, DVD, BLU-RAY, DIGITAL, DVRd it, and I have the book. I was 6 when it came out and I remember sitting in the theater with my cousins and uncles and just mesmerized by this movie. I became a network security analyst because of this movie because of Lex. I love this movie so much.

AWESOME!!! My wife and I saw this in the theater five times. And countless times in our home theater. After Dr. Grant grabbed the dead fence and turned around and smiled, my wife said, "what a butthead!" Everyone in the theater laughed at her line so loud they missed what the kids said. 😂😂
@@thegladve I was going to mention that one too! I was at Disney World when they had the WFRR ride and the Dick Tracy tie in. All the costumes from the movie were there...makes you realize how short the actors are, lol! I had my picture taken in a Roger Rabbit car with him, so funny!
@@charlottemccaig578 Speaking of the unexpectedly small stature of some actors, I had a similar (but slightly different) experience at the Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. When checking out all the famous handprints, feetprints, and signatures in the cement outside the theater, I saw what appeared to be the prints of a tiny pair of ladies' high heel shoes. Then I read the name: John Wayne. They were his bootprints. Although John Wayne was 6'4"-ish (though Robert Mitchum claimed he wore 4-inch lifts in his boots), he apparently wore men's size 6 shoes. Katherine Hepburn described him as having "a pair of small, sensitive feet, carrying his huge frame as though it were a feather." Another time, on the Universal Studios tour, we got to see the "western town" facades and street where they filmed a number of westerns. On one side of the street, they built the doorways larger and, on the other side of the street, they built the doorways smaller. For certain shots, they filmed the ladies in the larger doorways so they looked smaller and more petite and they filmed the guys in the smaller doorways so they looked larger and more heroic. Hollywood magic!

I was a senior in high school when this movie came out and, since it stayed in the "dollar theater" about a year, saw it about 15 times. My favorite thing was taking people who hadn't seen it yet. Listening to you two react while I made dinner was like reliving those experiences lol. And I really wish I could have told Amber early on that the kids were going to be okay.
A bit late but fun fact, the kids' screams during the T-Rex attack were so good because it was very real. That glass roof wasn't supposed to break or give so that was VERY real panic and terror.
That music when they first see the dinosaur herd gallopping into view has never, in 20 years of watching this movie (I'm 27 now), failed to put tears in my eyes :D John Williams is such an amazing music maker! :D
One of my absolute favorite movies of all-time. I won 2 free tickets to see it when it opened in Denmark, and since I was 16 I could take my brother (who was 11 then) along to see it without one of our parents coming too. We both love dinosaurs, even today, so this was a great afternoon at the movies for us.
My friend and I went to see this when it first came out. Right around the time that Laura Dern goes to turn the power back on we both had to pee so incredibly bad. But neither of us were willing to get up and miss any of the movie. We suffered through to the end and all the tension and scares, about to burst. When it was finally over we ran to the bathrooms but no one else was going to get up and go either during the movie so the line was all the way down the hall. We ended up running to her car and breaking about 20 different traffic laws to get to a KFC down the street. Good times. :)
Since you like the 60s, I thought this movie "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" might be something you might like. It's an adventure/comedy starring Mike Meyers who is the voice of Shrek. He plays 2 different roles in this movie. There are 2 other movies that come after it as well. Amber, you are gonna LOVE the clothes in this movie!!
The final scene, the pelicans flying over the ocean, actually has a deeper connotation. The current theory that birds are direct descendants from theropods, two-legged dinosaurs, means our fearless friends have not completely escaped..... good starting point for a sequel, eh? The CGI, animatronics, and puppetry of "Jurassic Park" has held up very well over the lact several decades.
Sauropods and other large dinosaurs could not live in today's environment with a thinner, less oxygen saturated atmosphere. Dinosaurs also are hyped by Hollywood. The fossils only comprise a smaller fraction of total animal fossils. The average size of a dinosaur was also the size of a sheep. There is also scant evidence to show birds (warm blooded animals with completely different physiology) are in any way related to reptiles. The current evidence shows this, despite what the uninformed think about the "archaeopteryx" fossil. There is also evidence both from recent 1990s and forward and centuries to 1000 years old that there has been relatively recent deaths of certain species of dinosaurs (soft tissue, blood vessels from Montana /Utah/Dakotas; pictographs from Egypt, North America of things appearing to be sauropods - long necks, think bodies, long thick tails, with one showing what appears to be men controlling/riding/training them). A temple in Cambodia has a carving 700 yrs old with what appears to be a stegasaurus. An image in the UK several centuries old at the tomb of a bishop shows what looks like sauropods.

They were showing the birds at the end because they mentioned during the movie that they are the closest relatives to dinosaurs that we still have genetically speaking.
I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out. It stood out because in the midst of the scariest scenes someone in our theater had a heart attack. They stopped the movie and we were told to stay in our seats until paramedics arrived and could tend to the person. We were then told we could stay and continue to watch or receive a free pass to watch another showing.
This was a great reaction! This movie's special effects were so groundbreaking for the time. Seeing it when it came out in theaters as a 9-year-old dinosaur-loving kid is still my favorite movie-going experience ever. Nobody had ever seen anything like this before and the whole theater was gasping, screaming, and cheering throughout. Just a warning if you're going to watch the whole franchise though, NONE of the sequels come close to being as good as this, though some of them are still pretty fun. Spielberg gave us some real movie magic with this one that IMO none of the subsequent movies ever quite managed to recapture. Since you guys have already done "Jaws" and this one, you should keep going through early Spielberg. The "Indiana Jones" movies and "E.T." would be some great follow ups
This film came out when I was 10 and I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I can’t even articulate how amazing it was seeing them on the big screen and looking so realistic. My 4th grade class went to see it in the theatre and it blew everyone away. A masterpiece.

The sound company DTS was created by Spielberg for this movie. Some of the scenes of the storm was an actual hurricane that hit Hawaii while they were filming.
The feeling of relief that you guys expressed about seeing the pelicans at the end of the film made me laugh a little. Birds are now widely accepted as genetic descendents of dinosaurs. Like how you pointed out that the gallimimus running resembled ostriches. Many therapods such as t-rex, deinonychus and velociraptors have skeletal structures much like birds. One other note about Jurassic Park - they exaggerated the velociraptor. They were actually closer to the size of the dilophosaurus (the frilled therapod that gets Dennis Nedry in the Jeep) and dilophosaurus were actually a bit larger than the velociraptors in the movie, but smaller than t-rex. As a dinosaur nerd kid this film blew me away. It came out when I was 12 and I have always loved it.
The Dinosaur lying on its side that you asked the name of is Triceratops (Tri Cera Tops = Three Horn(ed) Face). Only the Lawyer from the guests got eaten, but most of the main staff did too. The point of showing the birds at the end wasn't to show 'regular' wildlife lol, it was to show that Dinosaurs were ALREADY still amongst us, that's what birds are, dinosaur descendents, specifically relatives of the Raptors.
After watching this movie as a kid, it led my sister and I down the dinosaur movie rabbit hole. After 30 years, it still stands the test of time. Great reaction, after we saw this we saw Carnosaur and other movies. Still have a documentary on them as well
The few minutes of tension and fear in the dark rain soaked T Rex paddock, is especially amongst the best movie moments you will see anywhere. No soundtrack needed either you'll notice for those scenes.

Imagine if you will, a world without amazing CGI in every movie and seeing your first realistic dinosaur on the big screen. It's a great movie, but I really wish you could have the Gen-X experience of movies. Terminator 2 came out in '91 and that blew our minds too. This is up there with the Star Wars opening in the 70s
I remember seeing Star Wars in the theater and the simple effect of streaking the stars when jumping to lightspeed blew my mind. Creativity wins, whether large or small.

Of course, the swelling music and "Welcome...to Jurassic Park" from Lord Richard freakin' Attenborough probably helped. 😂 But we'd never seen anything so fantastical look so real. Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park really started the CGI revolution. Those films are up there with Star Wars, movies that changed everything. These films are iconic legendary masterpieces. I saw Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park at the cinema, and I realised that I was seeing a revolution in cinema unfold before my eyes.
Just Gen-X? Hello! Baby boomer fascinated with dinosaurs from age 8. Jurassic Park has some cringe worthy moments, but the dinosaur effects were goose-bumps. Star Wars. I was a college freshman in LA that year. I went home for Xmas break when there were still lines around the block for it. In Richmond VA they let me and my friend Scott sit through it twice in a row. They weren't even clearing the theater between showings. :0 LOL!

An incredible theatre experience that I will never forget. The ending as they fly away from the island on the helicopter and they see the pelicans gliding along with them is meant to show the connection between the non-avian dinosaurs and their modern counterparts.

I annoyed the hell out of my parents back in the day with my dinosaur obsession... then this movie came out, my parents took me and my friend to the theater as a surprise - it was a great day :) When we walked out my Dad said "so I hope you shut up finally ;)"

seeing this in the theater was a SURREAL experience. i was in high school and i think it was my first time in a fully packed auditorium, everybody screaming and yelling and jumping at all the right moments. totally fantastic.
I know the effects look somewhat dated, but keep in mind, this movie was near the beginning of CGI effects, and it blew people's minds when it debuted. If I can give you some feedback...I would encourage you to have more commentary after the movie. Maybe take a few minutes to talk about elements such as the story, characters, acting, even things like effects or environments and costumes. Definitely talk about how the movie made you feel or react in certain scenes. I think people want to hear your thoughts. Even before the movie it might be interesting to hear what you know or think you are getting into, then after you can revisit how right or wrong you were.
It was mind blowing back in 1993 when it was in theaters. It was the perfect blend of physical animatronic props for the dinos and CGI. I personally would take physical props over CGI any day because no matter how good you are CGI doesnt age as well as physical props do.
@@matthewsuchomski2593 Yeah, a lot of the "Jurassic Park" FX still look great because Spielberg learned the value of obscuring the limitations of an effect from his experience on "Jaws." And, of course, as always, he surrounded himself with people who are really smart and REALLY good at what they do. In the early part of the movie, though, when the sun is still up and everything's in relatively bright light, the effects are, by modern standards, a little rough. This is at least partially because ambient occlusion wasn't a thing at the time and, without it, the contrast on the dinos is pretty flat, especially when compared to the light and contrast of the people and things around them. Once the sun goes down, though, the filmmakers start using a lot of intense directional lighting, edge lighting, rain, lightning strikes, etc. to confuse the eye and obscure the flatness of the old CG. It's really well thought out and well done and this is why, e.g., the T-Rex CG still looks so awesome, even this many years later. Corridor Crew actually did a really great video on it. As far as The Phantom Menace goes, I haven't watched it since it came out and I saw it in the theater. I'll take your word for it that the FX don't hold up as well because, honestly, I have no desire to revisit that movie. Jar-Jar me once, shame on you... Jar-Jar me twice, shame on me.
Great reactions to this film. My son was 7 when this came out and he begged us to take him to see it. We finally did and while I was jumping out of my seat scared to death, he was having a ball. Loved dinosaurs then and now as an adult. I agree with Meredith that Princess Bride would be a great movie to see. My heart needs a rest after this one.
Fun fact when the t-rex dove in through the moon roof of the jeep, the animatronic accidentally went through and the kids' reactions were in genuine fright and Spielberg decided to keep the take lol.

Pure magic. My favorite movie of all time. Saw it when I was 8 years old. CGI wasn’t really a thing yet. The only way you saw dinosaurs up until JP was books or toys. I had always dreamed of seeing one in real life, somehow. When that Brachiosaurus appeared on the screen, my dream came true. Like it did for millions. I saw the movie 5 more times in the theater. One of the greatest experiences of my life.

This movie helped me decide what I wanted to do for a living (animation) and it's also the movie I've seen the most times in a theater (about 8 or 9). :) Nowadays there are CG creatures everywhere you look but when this first came out, nobody had ever seen animation that realistic. Oh, man, I loved your, "maybe it won't hurt him" line shortly before he got attacked by the small one LOL. My friends and I were in art school in '93 when this came out and were blown away by the fact that for the first time dinosaurs looked real. Not like some lizards with prosthetics glued to them or other nonsense no one believed. We were in Florida and after leaving the theater we kept looking over the tops of the trees and were suddenly very jumpy at the geckos darting in between the bushes. But the we went back and saw it 7 more times because the T-Rex scene was incredible on the silver screen. And 3o years later, I still love this film.
OMG just watched this & was wondering if you guys have seen it! So excited to check this out after I make dinner!! I'd recommend checking out Galaxy Quest (comedy with Sigourney Weaver from Ghostbusters) & A Hard Day's Night - which is a Beatles movie (literally, it's the Fab Four in a fun romp where they essentially play through the entire album, like a feature length music video with a simple plot & you get to see their hilarious sense of humor & relationship with each other)

Triceratops… Also this movie was truly a marvel a true gem know one of the true gems of Steven Spielberg's greatness as well as the people that worked with him. This movie along with various other 90s movies used both practicality and CGI effects Fun fact: in the park with the raptor looking up at the vents in the computer room you see the codes for DNA. Fun fact: the velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus rex sound effects were used using dolphins dogs tigers and other animals, all with subwoofers and alternating sounds. Fun fact: the shaving cream can makes a final appearance in the final Jurassic World movie...just something for you to look out for when you see it. Fun fact: The actor that played Dennis nerdy has starred in a few shows like Seinfeld and has starred in a cartoon called catscratch on Nickelodeon I hope you guys remember that all the dinosaurs on this island or female Fun fact: the Dilophosaurus scene was a lot different in the book… And more gruesome. 24:00 you bailing to the bushes you're easy pray, remember the Tyrannosaurus rex vision is based on movement the moment it sees you fall off it'll think "mmm, easy food", then you're Rex food... that or you get stepped on At the end of the movie the pelican scene was supposed to be a representation of what dr. Grant said about you'll never see birds the same way again.
I saw this as a kid in the movies. Was so scary with the surround sound and everything. I was obsessed even dressed like Dr. Grant for a little bit haha. Still love this movie at 40 years old lol. I still get chills every time that scene of T-Rex roaring at Grant waving he flare. Great reaction.

It's hard for new viewers to appreciate just how stunning this was in the theater. CGI was still a new thing, the images on the screen were huge, and the surround sound made you feel as if you were going to be torn apart by a t-rex.
The CGI was soooo good for the time. That first moment when you see the sauropod… majestic.

When this was shown in theaters, they had already come out with "surround sound". Not only could you hear the dinosaurs steps, the speakers in the theater were all around you, and you could actually feel the vibrations. It was some scary stuff.
This movie kinda ruined my life. lol I was told that for the rumble effect when the water vibrates they had to invent the technology to transmit that low boom. Apparently that low note wasn't possible before except in live performances. That's why now you hear the cars go by and the subwoofers shake everything. I'm sensitive to noise so having those stereos in my neighborhood makes my life crappy. So every time I see the water in the cup shake, I remember how cool it seemed in the theater but then not knowing that it would be the end of peace and quiet.

I remember all of that!! I also remember that this was the first movie that featured SUVs... before that, I didn't really see that many around. This movie catapulted the success of the Ford Escape. One of these days, I need to read the book. I also remember getting really freaked out by the T-Rex! "Where's the goat?"

He cut corners in countless places, he "spared no expense" when it came to having fancy food and celebrity voiceovers for the tour.

Found out that the part where Dr Grant is struggling to secure his seatbelt in the heli because he has two 'female' fixings, but then just tied them together, was a deliberate reference to the dinosaurs being all female but managing to breed. "life finds a way".

"welcome to Jurassic park." that moment was not only one of the greatest moments in this film, but also a defining moment in movie making. Because in that scenic wide shot that follows, we got to see the full power and possibilities of CGI. It changed things forever.
Having been lucky enough to see this in the theatre when it was first released, I love that every time we've been to Universal Studios in Florida since then, whenever you walk into the Jurassic Park section of the theme park, you pass under that JP arch and the music starts up, and you get that EXACT feeling that you had watching that exact scene. It's such a cool thing.
I think they would love the Princess Bride. After Jurassic Park & Shawshank, they could do with some light-hearted fun. (They found the Goonies scary!) 🏴☠👸

I can't believe it has been almost 30 years since this came out. I remember seeing this in the theatre. When the T-Rex roared, everything shook! I was blown away by the realism of the special effects - I could almost believe dinosaurs had actually returned. Even by today's standards, the dinos still look good.
It still looks better than any of the recent sequels that rely on cgi and an oversaturated polish where you lose the sense of realism and grit. New ones look "produced", while the classics have a more sincere feel. Wish I was born 10 years earlier so I could have watched it in cinema

Most of them are made by TH-cam "experts" who are baiting for views and discussions rather than staying scientifically objective (aka they have the latest data, but they use their own subjective interpretation of that data and act as if it means anything they say is scientifically accurate - but often times they neglect a lot of context that people who actually study paleontology and biology would know and incorporate into their opinions and suggestions).
The main way to determine if a "historically accurate JP" vid is a hoax, is to simply see how often the content creator is featuring self doubt and questioning their own findings. If they don't do this at literally every step of the way, and with no further explanation as to why not, then they're likely a hoax who's just farming views and engagement.

Special effects in this movie were game changers.....Folks had NEVER seen anything like this.
I worked at the theater at universal studios Hollywood when this came out. They did a huge production. I got to sit in on one of the premieres, when the 1st dinosaur appeared on screen, everyone gasped and started clapping. It was a breakthrough in computer graphics.
Jurassic Park isn't really an especially good movie, the story is really stupid, the acting is meh, and the dinos are laughably overpowered for what they are, but Spielberg absolutely knows how to hit the emotional beats. That reveal of the first dinosaur out on the plains, the rising music, the crescendo as it literally causes a mini-earthquake coming down... Few moments top that in any other movie. And he managed to get quite a few similar moments (of other emotions) out of this movie.
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 They don't focus on it in the movie but the dinos in the park aren't 100% copies of the originals. The designers may have embellished some traits more than others to make them appear more like what we would expect a dinosaur to be like. At least that's the in-universe excuse.

The story concept was original at the time. The mosquito explanation is clever. There's comic relief galore. There is depth in the lunch conversation. Attenborough's performance about the flee circus is well done. There is suspense, wonder, and horror throughout.

Rob, as the helicopter flew away from the island, you said "Thank goodness for regular birds". Ironically, within a couple of years of this movie's release, scientists determined that modern-day birds are, in fact, direct descendants of the dinosaurs, and not merely of the flying dinos, either. In the almost 30 years since "Jurassic Park" was released, it has become commonly accepted as fact, that today's birds are, basically, modern dinosaurs, evolved.
It has also been discovered that author Michael Crichton, a medical doctor himself, got it wrong about the poor eyesight of the Tyrannosaurus Rex; that beast could see you perfectly fine, whether you were moving or not. And Velociraptors, for all of their intelligence, brutality and strength, were only slightly larger than today's chickens.
Even in the movie, Dr. Grant said that some scientists thought that birds might have been related to dinosaurs.
I’d like to recommend the Indiana Jones movies, starting with Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The stone he holds up in the beginning with the mosquito is called Amber. It’s actually hardened tree sap, but very pretty.
Many people have replicated that look by using resin, I think theres a guy here on TH-cam that recreated Hammonds cain with the amber handle using I think bamboo and resin.

Well, lets consider the billionaire old man ,who kept saying, "I've spared no expense", Really John?
Then why the HELL didn't you have a BACKUP company, for the security system, in the event there's an unhappy employee,like Dennis, and he shuts down the security system, you should have to call a secondary back up company, to give access, before shutting down the security system! Viola. That would have kept the park opened for everyone to enjoy, but that flaw, of course, created the movie.
The old man certainly spared some expense because a secondary company , probably not that expensive, on shore somewhere, should have been required as a double back up, before shutting down the fences.

Micheal Crichton has written some brilliant books & several of them have been made into great films including Timeline (one of my favourites), Coma, Westworld, The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Sphere, Rising Sun & The 13th Warrior .... such a talented storyteller ....
She is an artist and Joseph Mozello is still acting. He went on to The Social Network and played Queen bass guitarist, John Deacon, in Bohemian Rhapsody

It struck me as I was reading that this would make a good movie, it could be easily transcribed into a script, and I think he probably did it that way with hopes of a future movie. When they movie was announced, I was vindicated. Perhaps I just got lucky but those were certainly my feelings at the time.
The dinosaur you asked about is a Triceratops. Which literally translates to three-horns-on-face. It was a herbivore that could get to be 30 feet long, 10 feet tall and weighing in at around 26000 lbs.
Fun fact: Triceratops was the only herbivore species that not only _could_ beat T-rexes on one-on-one battle, but did it often! That why Triceratops has been my favorite dinosaur since I was a kid. 🤓
Don't worry if Luka turns out like my son was from ages 3-5 y'all about to know all the dinosaur names.
In the book, the triceratops were eating the African violets but it was throwing them up which is why it wasn't found in the poop. If you are into reading the book is fabulous.

Lol. True but, honestly, that doesn't mean people wanna watch it happen. My wife was a vet tech and, as a result, we fostered a lot of dogs and cats over the years (as well as a goat, a rooster, and various other animals). When we had indoor/outdoor cats, I knew the cats were out there hunting birds and rodents and whatnot but I def didn't want to watch them killing one. Nature is, for lack of a better word, natural but I don't need to be standing by rooting it on.
So, yeah, knowing it and spectating it are two separate things. I will never understand why people like to watch RL videos of animals fighting and/or killing other animals. I mean, live ya life but watching RL violence just isn't for me, dawg. The world is rough enough without making the darker parts of it your entertainment.
With movies, I personally don't care as much bc it obvs isn't real (horror movies don't bother me at all for the same reason) but, idk, I think it's kind of sweet that J&A have enough empathy that it's hard for them to watch even the fictional depiction of a cow or goat getting munched.
I mean, hell, they even felt bad about Newman and the bloodsucking lawyer getting eaten. That's a level of niceness and sweetness you don't run across too often and I'm here for it.

I was managing a cinemaplex in Pittsburgh when Jurassic Park opened in June of 1993, and the public response was unbelievable. I had not seen the likes of this since the Star Wars movies a decade prior.
My sister and I were a bit too young to watch this movie when it originally came out, but I remember seeing the commercials for the movie, toys, video games, and other merchandise. It was really hyped up!

You mistook the ending. When you see the birds flying at the end and Grant sees them, he smiles. Not because he is happy to just see birds but because he is adamant and knows that dinos have evolved into what we simply call birds today. It goes back to his first scene in the film where his paleo colleages laugh when he posits that certain kinds of dinos have evolved into modern-day birds. Grant’s smile at the end is less “Thank god, no more dinosaurs” and more a bittersweet, “They’ve always been living among us, all this time”. I’ve always wished this film dealt more into that.
You mistook the ending..the birds that you see at the end are actual dinosaurs..they are flying Pterodactyl not merely birds.

Hammond was played by The late Richard Attenborough, brother of Sir David Attenborough, easily the greatest naturalist in history. His nature documentaries are amazing, and he just released a five-part miniseries on Apple TV+, “Planet Dinosaur”. An incredible look at dinosaurs and their behavior. For a new perspective at the opposite end of the spectrum I highly recommend it!

One of the most incredible movie theater experiences in my entire life. I grew up loving dinosaurs and prehistoric planetary life. Seeing this on the big screen was magical.
This is my absolute favorite movie in the entire world, I can watch it over and over. I know every scene and every line. I own it on VHS, DVD, BLU-RAY, DIGITAL, DVRd it, and I have the book. I was 6 when it came out and I remember sitting in the theater with my cousins and uncles and just mesmerized by this movie. I became a network security analyst because of this movie because of Lex. I love this movie so much.

After Dr. Grant grabbed the dead fence and turned around and smiled, my wife said, "what a butthead!" Everyone in the theater laughed at her line so loud they missed what the kids said. 😂😂

@@thegladve I was going to mention that one too! I was at Disney World when they had the WFRR ride and the Dick Tracy tie in. All the costumes from the movie were there...makes you realize how short the actors are, lol! I had my picture taken in a Roger Rabbit car with him, so funny!
@@charlottemccaig578 Speaking of the unexpectedly small stature of some actors, I had a similar (but slightly different) experience at the Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. When checking out all the famous handprints, feetprints, and signatures in the cement outside the theater, I saw what appeared to be the prints of a tiny pair of ladies' high heel shoes. Then I read the name: John Wayne. They were his bootprints.
Although John Wayne was 6'4"-ish (though Robert Mitchum claimed he wore 4-inch lifts in his boots), he apparently wore men's size 6 shoes. Katherine Hepburn described him as having "a pair of small, sensitive feet, carrying his huge frame as though it were a feather."
Another time, on the Universal Studios tour, we got to see the "western town" facades and street where they filmed a number of westerns. On one side of the street, they built the doorways larger and, on the other side of the street, they built the doorways smaller. For certain shots, they filmed the ladies in the larger doorways so they looked smaller and more petite and they filmed the guys in the smaller doorways so they looked larger and more heroic.

I was a senior in high school when this movie came out and, since it stayed in the "dollar theater" about a year, saw it about 15 times. My favorite thing was taking people who hadn't seen it yet. Listening to you two react while I made dinner was like reliving those experiences lol. And I really wish I could have told Amber early on that the kids were going to be okay.
A bit late but fun fact, the kids' screams during the T-Rex attack were so good because it was very real. That glass roof wasn't supposed to break or give so that was VERY real panic and terror.
Kinda but no, not really. It was 100% supposed to go through the glass but there was a malfunction that made it go through a bit harder than planned.

Have you seen "Tuning in"'s video about the Jurassic Park score? It's fantastic, and actually invokes that first time viewing feeling.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all-time. I won 2 free tickets to see it when it opened in Denmark, and since I was 16 I could take my brother (who was 11 then) along to see it without one of our parents coming too. We both love dinosaurs, even today, so this was a great afternoon at the movies for us.
My friend and I went to see this when it first came out. Right around the time that Laura Dern goes to turn the power back on we both had to pee so incredibly bad. But neither of us were willing to get up and miss any of the movie. We suffered through to the end and all the tension and scares, about to burst. When it was finally over we ran to the bathrooms but no one else was going to get up and go either during the movie so the line was all the way down the hall. We ended up running to her car and breaking about 20 different traffic laws to get to a KFC down the street. Good times. :)
Since you like the 60s, I thought this movie "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" might be something you might like. It's an adventure/comedy starring Mike Meyers who is the voice of Shrek. He plays 2 different roles in this movie. There are 2 other movies that come after it as well. Amber, you are gonna LOVE the clothes in this movie!!

The final scene, the pelicans flying over the ocean, actually has a deeper connotation. The current theory that birds are direct descendants from theropods, two-legged dinosaurs, means our fearless friends have not completely escaped..... good starting point for a sequel, eh? The CGI, animatronics, and puppetry of "Jurassic Park" has held up very well over the lact several decades.
It's not a theory though, they are.
Sauropods and other large dinosaurs could not live in today's environment with a thinner, less oxygen saturated atmosphere.
Dinosaurs also are hyped by Hollywood.
The fossils only comprise a smaller fraction of total animal fossils.
The average size of a dinosaur was also the size of a sheep.
There is also scant evidence to show birds (warm blooded animals with completely different physiology) are in any way related to reptiles.
The current evidence shows this, despite what the uninformed think about the "archaeopteryx" fossil.
There is also evidence both from recent 1990s and forward and centuries to 1000 years old that there has been relatively recent deaths of certain species of dinosaurs (soft tissue, blood vessels from Montana /Utah/Dakotas; pictographs from Egypt, North America of things appearing to be sauropods - long necks, think bodies, long thick tails, with one showing what appears to be men controlling/riding/training them).
A temple in Cambodia has a carving 700 yrs old with what appears to be a stegasaurus.
An image in the UK several centuries old at the tomb of a bishop shows what looks like sauropods.

I was there in 1993, a wide eyed 13 year old in New Jersey. My parents took me to see Jurassic Park and my life would never be the same again !
They were showing the birds at the end because they mentioned during the movie that they are the closest relatives to dinosaurs that we still have genetically speaking.

I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out. It stood out because in the midst of the scariest scenes someone in our theater had a heart attack. They stopped the movie and we were told to stay in our seats until paramedics arrived and could tend to the person. We were then told we could stay and continue to watch or receive a free pass to watch another showing.
There were a lot of stories like that.
I think it was the surround-sound, more than the visuals.

This was a great reaction! This movie's special effects were so groundbreaking for the time. Seeing it when it came out in theaters as a 9-year-old dinosaur-loving kid is still my favorite movie-going experience ever. Nobody had ever seen anything like this before and the whole theater was gasping, screaming, and cheering throughout. Just a warning if you're going to watch the whole franchise though, NONE of the sequels come close to being as good as this, though some of them are still pretty fun. Spielberg gave us some real movie magic with this one that IMO none of the subsequent movies ever quite managed to recapture. Since you guys have already done "Jaws" and this one, you should keep going through early Spielberg. The "Indiana Jones" movies and "E.T." would be some great follow ups

This film came out when I was 10 and I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I can’t even articulate how amazing it was seeing them on the big screen and looking so realistic. My 4th grade class went to see it in the theatre and it blew everyone away. A masterpiece.

The sound company DTS was created by Spielberg for this movie. Some of the scenes of the storm was an actual hurricane that hit Hawaii while they were filming.
The feeling of relief that you guys expressed about seeing the pelicans at the end of the film made me laugh a little. Birds are now widely accepted as genetic descendents of dinosaurs. Like how you pointed out that the gallimimus running resembled ostriches. Many therapods such as t-rex, deinonychus and velociraptors have skeletal structures much like birds. One other note about Jurassic Park - they exaggerated the velociraptor. They were actually closer to the size of the dilophosaurus (the frilled therapod that gets Dennis Nedry in the Jeep) and dilophosaurus were actually a bit larger than the velociraptors in the movie, but smaller than t-rex. As a dinosaur nerd kid this film blew me away. It came out when I was 12 and I have always loved it.
the Velociraptors in this are basically bald Deinonychus

The Dinosaur lying on its side that you asked the name of is Triceratops (Tri Cera Tops = Three Horn(ed) Face).
Only the Lawyer from the guests got eaten, but most of the main staff did too.
The point of showing the birds at the end wasn't to show 'regular' wildlife lol, it was to show that Dinosaurs were ALREADY still amongst us, that's what birds are, dinosaur descendents, specifically relatives of the Raptors.
After watching this movie as a kid, it led my sister and I down the dinosaur movie rabbit hole. After 30 years, it still stands the test of time. Great reaction, after we saw this we saw Carnosaur and other movies. Still have a documentary on them as well
The few minutes of tension and fear in the dark rain soaked T Rex paddock, is especially amongst the best movie moments you will see anywhere. No soundtrack needed either you'll notice for those scenes.

Imagine if you will, a world without amazing CGI in every movie and seeing your first realistic dinosaur on the big screen. It's a great movie, but I really wish you could have the Gen-X experience of movies. Terminator 2 came out in '91 and that blew our minds too. This is up there with the Star Wars opening in the 70s
I remember seeing Star Wars in the theater and the simple effect of streaking the stars when jumping to lightspeed blew my mind. Creativity wins, whether large or small.
⬆ I had tears the same way Dr. Sattler did, because I felt like I was seeing a real dinosaur. Of course, the swelling music and "Welcome...to Jurassic Park" from Lord Richard freakin' Attenborough probably helped. 😂 But we'd never seen anything so fantastical look so real. It was a bit overwhelming.
Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park really started the CGI revolution. Those films are up there with Star Wars, movies that changed everything. These films are iconic legendary masterpieces. I saw Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park at the cinema, and I realised that I was seeing a revolution in cinema unfold before my eyes.
Just Gen-X? Hello! Baby boomer fascinated with dinosaurs from age 8. Jurassic Park has some cringe worthy moments, but the dinosaur effects were goose-bumps.
Star Wars. I was a college freshman in LA that year. I went home for Xmas break when there were still lines around the block for it. In Richmond VA they let me and my friend Scott sit through it twice in a row. They weren't even clearing the theater between showings. :0 LOL!

An incredible theatre experience that I will never forget. The ending as they fly away from the island on the helicopter and they see the pelicans gliding along with them is meant to show the connection between the non-avian dinosaurs and their modern counterparts.

I annoyed the hell out of my parents back in the day with my dinosaur obsession... then this movie came out, my parents took me and my friend to the theater as a surprise - it was a great day :)

The CGI when this came out was jawdropping. I still think this movie has stood up to time and the effects still just as good.

seeing this in the theater was a SURREAL experience. i was in high school and i think it was my first time in a fully packed auditorium, everybody screaming and yelling and jumping at all the right moments. totally fantastic.
I know the effects look somewhat dated, but keep in mind, this movie was near the beginning of CGI effects, and it blew people's minds when it debuted.
If I can give you some feedback...I would encourage you to have more commentary after the movie. Maybe take a few minutes to talk about elements such as the story, characters, acting, even things like effects or environments and costumes. Definitely talk about how the movie made you feel or react in certain scenes. I think people want to hear your thoughts. Even before the movie it might be interesting to hear what you know or think you are getting into, then after you can revisit how right or wrong you were.

I’d say the effects aren’t that dated, they hold up better than Star Wars episode one (for example) and that came out several years later.
It was mind blowing back in 1993 when it was in theaters. It was the perfect blend of physical animatronic props for the dinos and CGI. I personally would take physical props over CGI any day because no matter how good you are CGI doesnt age as well as physical props do.

@@matthewsuchomski2593 Yeah, a lot of the "Jurassic Park" FX still look great because Spielberg learned the value of obscuring the limitations of an effect from his experience on "Jaws." And, of course, as always, he surrounded himself with people who are really smart and REALLY good at what they do.
In the early part of the movie, though, when the sun is still up and everything's in relatively bright light, the effects are, by modern standards, a little rough. This is at least partially because ambient occlusion wasn't a thing at the time and, without it, the contrast on the dinos is pretty flat, especially when compared to the light and contrast of the people and things around them.
Once the sun goes down, though, the filmmakers start using a lot of intense directional lighting, edge lighting, rain, lightning strikes, etc. to confuse the eye and obscure the flatness of the old CG. It's really well thought out and well done and this is why, e.g., the T-Rex CG still looks so awesome, even this many years later. Corridor Crew actually did a really great video on it.
As far as The Phantom Menace goes, I haven't watched it since it came out and I saw it in the theater. I'll take your word for it that the FX don't hold up as well because, honestly, I have no desire to revisit that movie. Jar-Jar me once, shame on you... Jar-Jar me twice, shame on me.
Great reactions to this film. My son was 7 when this came out and he begged us to take him to see it. We finally did and while I was jumping out of my seat scared to death, he was having a ball. Loved dinosaurs then and now as an adult. I agree with Meredith that Princess Bride would be a great movie to see. My heart needs a rest after this one.

Fun fact when the t-rex dove in through the moon roof of the jeep, the animatronic accidentally went through and the kids' reactions were in genuine fright and Spielberg decided to keep the take lol.

You two should react to the original Red Dawn. It's my favorite movie, with a huge all star cast. Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey, C. Thomas Howell, etc.
Also, do not forget Powers Boothe is in Red Dawn, too. The remake was a disappointment, but the original is a great flick

Pure magic. My favorite movie of all time. Saw it when I was 8 years old. CGI wasn’t really a thing yet. The only way you saw dinosaurs up until JP was books or toys. I had always dreamed of seeing one in real life, somehow. When that Brachiosaurus appeared on the screen, my dream came true. Like it did for millions. I saw the movie 5 more times in the theater. One of the greatest experiences of my life.

This movie helped me decide what I wanted to do for a living (animation) and it's also the movie I've seen the most times in a theater (about 8 or 9). :) Nowadays there are CG creatures everywhere you look but when this first came out, nobody had ever seen animation that realistic. My friends and I were in art school in '93 when this came out and were blown away by the fact that for the first time dinosaurs looked real. Not like some lizards with prosthetics glued to them or other nonsense no one believed. We were in Florida and after leaving the theater we kept looking over the tops of the trees and were suddenly very jumpy at the geckos darting in between the bushes. But the we went back and saw it 7 more times because the T-Rex scene was incredible on the silver screen. And 3o years later, I still love this film.

I'd recommend checking out Galaxy Quest (comedy with Sigourney Weaver from Ghostbusters) & A Hard Day's Night - which is a Beatles movie (literally, it's the Fab Four in a fun romp where they essentially play through the entire album, like a feature length music video with a simple plot & you get to see their hilarious sense of humor & relationship with each other)

I saw this as a kid in the movies. Was so scary with the surround sound and everything. I was obsessed even dressed like Dr. Grant for a little bit haha. Still love this movie at 40 years old lol. I still get chills every time that scene of T-Rex roaring at Grant waving he flare. Great reaction.

Perfect timing with the new "Jurassic World" movie coming out this Friday! I hope that you'll find the time to watch the rest of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World series. This movie right here is my favorite out of the whole series. And I'm really looking forward to going to see "Jurassic World: Dominion" soon.

"Somebody grab the gun!" I've seen this movie many times since it came out, but I don't think I've ever seen it without someone yelling that during the control room scene!
This movie should be seen in the theatre. I was there opening night so many years ago and the reactions were amazing back then. After this, movies were never the same!!!!!
