Great Stuff, Mike! I love that Jed interviewed Alex before he thought it possible to FS El Cap. Of course we know now (as of 6.2.2017) Honnald has accomplished it. Must have mastered that down climb. You're the best, Mike.

Good source material. Could use more focused editing to stay on topic but very entertaining and informative. Glad to see that Aram got a starring role.

To add a little more to John Lawrence : The Gold Coast trail eventually was called Rockjock and its entire length would have taken hikers from Wisemans View to Dobson Knob Road Intersection -- all on the wsestern cliffedge of the Gorge. Most of this trail was destroyed by fire and not reestablished. The central section was reestablished by petitioning the Forest Service and the Rockjock became an official trail. It has one variation along a ledge called LOST --Lower Original Scramblers Trail. This is the section John hiked.
Mashburn's Pinnacle became known as 'The Sphinx. ( it looks like a Sphinx .! )
As an aside, a photographer in 1880, Rufus Morgan documented the NC Wall area in stereo (!) But his work was forgotten and his place names did not stick.

Can anyone explain the megalithic stone block wall between Pine Gap and Babel? It's off trail a ways. You'd know where if you know about it.

Thanks Mike and particularly John Lawrence for posting this. Rockjock was extended. John hiked about 1/3 of it. The extentions were destroyed by fire and never reestablished.
In addition, 48 other trails were created in Linville. Some of them are:
    Lower NC Wall
    Upper NC Wall
    Shortoff Cliff Base
    Henson Creek
    Sulfur Fungus ledge
    Hells Ridge / Avatars
    Westface
    Fantasy Creek
    Marion Wright
    Leadmine.
    The Grand Loop
    LOST
    ...
    ...
Of these, only the central part of Rockjock became Official.
And tho it might seem like overkill, quite a few other new trails could be added to open new scenery and to replace trails that will erode with increasing use.
The USFS expresses casual interest but they dont ask the questions they need answers for.
Anyway , i really appreciate Johns comments!

Now I know where all those 1970s Pabst blue ribbon cans came from.
