    From what I have been reading on Mariah Healey's Reptifile posts, and researching the flora and fauna of the southwestern region of Madagascar, this Rosy Boa BioActive setup you've done here would be very similar to one I would need to house a Dumeril's Boa (though much larger, of course), down to the same choice of substrate. I wonder if there is a less prolific type of isopod to use, as I don't want to have to cull out this particular species you chose? Thanks for promoting BioActive environments! and ty for these amazing videos too!

      Clown armadallidium Kluggi Isopods are less prolific and can handle the dryer climates but they NEED a hydration stations. They can get this but a really mossy spot near the water dish. If given more moisture they will start breeding more.

    I’ve been researching rosy boa’s as I’m preparing for one, and all the videos and websites I’ve seen said absolutely NO moisture as they are prone to respiratory infection, and humidity can induce that. Would this soil still be safe since some do tend to burrow?
    Edit: when I say no moisture i mean humidity of around 30-40%

    From my experience, they usually prefer only a small spot of their enclosure humid once a blue moon, but they prefer much dryer than almost all other boas (maybe Kenyan sand boas are the exception.) I never tried to make a bioactive enclosure for my 3 Rosy but may give it a try. I think isopods would require too much humidity and could cause respiratory problems for a rosy. I live close their actual region so I think temperature and humidity isn’t as much of a concern for the snake itself. One of rosy who is almost 30 and still going strong shes my grandma snake 😆. Overall I think The vivarium design is a very awesome. May do one for one of mine some day!

      @@onyx9917 @onyx9917 I've only ever owned them along with a corn snake though I've had a rosy boa for all my life.
      I did loose a smaller rosy boa when I was little, she sadly drowned in her dish. But my adults I've have little to no issues, hunger strikes or picky eaters. Babies of any snakes can be difficult to feed some require force feeding which is dangerous especially for newcomers. So I suggest a juvi or a adult.
      2 of my Rosie's are very docile thoigh one cannot be held because he has a strong feeding response.

    I set up a bioactive enclosure based on this guide. I am having trouble watering my succulents using the soak and dry method that most succulent keepers use. This is the first time I'm using terra sahara and I find that it is hydrophobic. When I try to water my plants, the water is slow to seep in and run off to where I don't want water to go. I am seeing signs that my plants are shriveling up from lack of water, especially those right under the lights. How have you been watering your plants?

      Hey Connor! please Reach out with photos of the plants and the enclosure to the Bio dude Facebook page- facebook.com/ThatBioDude or customercare@thebiodude.com so we can get you fixed up! I would start with watering them individually, each plant has their own specific watering needs and with direct lighting, they can be drying out faster, but there could be a few things and i would like to make sure we get this situated for you. Hope this helps! please let us know if we can answer any other questions for you!

    I'm thinking of trying to go bioactive with my 2 adult Rosy Boas. Both are albino one being Albino Matrix ( of Limburg lineage ) and the other is Albino Coastal Snow Limburg.
    I've done a few bioactive builds for my forest/tropical/subtropical scorpions so I understand the build. What I am concerned with is 1. Albinos light sensitivity and whether going full spectrum lighting will adversely affect my Boas. 2. What type of substrate isn't going to cause impaction. The last thing I want to do is harm my breeding adults. 3. Rosy boas requires humidity under 60, so how can you go bioactive and maintain healthy humidity. My scorpions enclosure is in the 80s using organic soil, leaf litter and spaghum moss with a drainage lair. Any advice?

    • @TheBioDudeJoshHalter
      @TheBioDudeJoshHalter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! Answering in order- Gorgeous morphs you have! For the UVB it should be very low and there should be as much coverage as possible in the enclosure since Albino animals can be extremely sensitive to UVB even though they still need it. I would recommend the Arcadia Shadedweller which I will copy the link to below.
      12" Arcadia Shadedweller UVB with Fixture: www.thebiodude.com/collections/reptile-and-amphibian-uvb/products/arcadia-shade-dweller-d3-7-uvb-t5-bulb-fixture-12
      Impaction i wouldnt worry about so long as the husbandry requirements are met and monitored on a regular basis, the heat they need will help them thermoregulate things passing through their body - www.thebiodude.com/blogs/bio-activity-with-your-pets-how-does-it-work-with-mine/does-substrates-cause-impaction-in-reptiles
      The Dude has designed several substrates to pair with the different biomes bioactivity can have, For rosy boas we recommend the Terra Sahara, and this Blog will help explain the processes - www.thebiodude.com/blogs/how-do-i-create-a-bioactive-vivarium/yes-you-can-have-an-arid-bioactive-setup

    Followed this to a "T" and honestly I dont know how he has a "bioactive" enclosure after about 6 weeks as depending on size of enclosure you will start to battle finding a medium for your humidity for clean up crew and dryness for snake. The snake is a desert snake. Still I tried. I tried keep one side the humid side. What happens is because of the high temps rosy need, even when having deep layers of substrate to lock down moisture, it will dry out quickly. Best case for a few weeks in the small portion of the humid side i could keep wet the clean up crew survived a little longer however expecting those springtails and canyons to travel across the desert that is the rest of the enclosure to eat waste is not reasonable because they dont and when they do they die. There is no clean up crew that survive with little to no water. I purchased all of biodudes at onset of mine even creating a culture in separate container. the springtails and canyons. which apparently there is a debate of how "arid" any springtail actually is and its assumed most sellers just sell springtails. they need water. After several batches of clean up crew eventually died due to dry system i met with an entomologist at a repticon and i brought up the situation and mentioned biodude and he laughed. dont get me wrong i learned a lot from this video and my enclosure is beautiful however to keep enough moisture in the soil to keep clean up crew alive you will raise the humidity in system potentially to unsafe levels jeapordizing snake. So, I have a system set up as bioactive but nothing to clean up.

    This is a bad idea and is spreading false information. Every enclosure doesn’t need to be "bioactive” only tropical and woodland species should have bioactive enclosures. Rosy boas are from the arid southwest where humidity is 10-25% and they don’t live on soil, they mainly live in granite and sand, it’s ok to have a small hide with 40-50% humidity but not the entire enclosure. This guy is not an expert and is just trying to market "bioactive”, which was invented for dart frogs to clean up after a very small animal and to provide an extra food source, it was not intended for desert species

    • @layne2112
      @layne2112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And uvb and a basking spot is not what these snakes prefer, they are nocturnal snakes and need underbelly heat like heat tape or a heat pad, bright lights and uvb are harmful to their eyes, and when they are rarely active at dawn or dusk the uvb levels are very low usually 4% or 7% uvb so having a bright uvb lamp is unnecessary and potentially harmful. It’s really disappointing to see such a terrible enclosure be advertised as good care which it isn’t

      Advice to any perpective rosyboa keepers: keep it simple, and use a thermostat. Rosies are not woodland snakes. Yes they do stay in burrows most of the time, where humidity tends to be rather stable but not at all high (except if it rains.) Burrows prevent the snake from losing moisture and allow the snake to avoid temperature extremes.
      I use aspen chips or else an aspen-pine mix, and then some sheets of packing paper as hides. The snakes seem to like the weight of the paper (even if negligible) on them as they hide under it. I use undercage heat for reasons stated. As Layne said, it is best to avoid bright lights. Yes, the snake can hide to avoid them, but if avoiding them, then why have them.

      dumbest thing I ever heard. Pretty sure boas, and any living thing...LIVE OUTSIDE. Their environment is made of your fucking whack paper and aspen. Also please name me one natural source of heat that comes from under ground. The point of lamps is to heat the ground/rock/cork to the needed temperature. The light isnt for giving overhead heat. Learn something

      Tell that to my bio active Leo enclosure, the belly heat is made by heating the rocks, not all reptiles live in geothermal areas
