For about 50 years, I have wondered why audio gear manufacturers cannot get this one simple thing right. It's INFRASONIC, not subsonic. Subsonic means "slower than the speed of sound." Infrasonic means "below the range of human hearing."

Another great review! I can't wait until I get a chance to upgrade my system. There will be so much wonderful and helpful information on this channel! I hope you are enjoying your summer!!
Teac cd players are becoming the talk of the town too. A company that's improved. I once heard a dramatic improvement from moving coil cartridge de-magnetizing at a store demonstration. Spatiality improvement was the most obvious thing. A.J. Van den hul, the famous moving coil cartridge maker says never to do that. Early benefits of demagnetization are outweighed by gradual degradation of your cartridge over time. That's his opinion. I'm the kind of guy that would do it anyway and if degradation eventually got noticeable, I'd get another cartridge. What a feature to have built in. I've been listening to a lot of Jazz Fusion lately. Here are some classic tracks you can hear on TH-cam and elsewhere. Nuclear Burn - Brand X.....(Phil Collins jazz group while he was still with Genesis). Slow Body Poppin' - Billy Cobham The Introduction - Steve Morse Lakeshore Drive - Art Porter Lone Jack - Pat Metheny Friends And Strangers - Dave Grusin Slinky - Chick Corea
I've been a fan of Steve Morse since his time with Deep Purple! Can't quite touch Ritchie Blackmore's tenure but still... Have you ever checked out Tommy Bolin - speaking of jazz fusion?
Mainly a session player I suppose, Tommy is best known for being the guitarist on the Fusion album Spectrum by Billy Cobham, which is considered a classic. I bought a used lp of it which looked good, but sounded worse and I think I only listened to it once. I hadn't listened to Stevie Ray Vaughn in years and I played a cassette of one of his best albums and it refreshed my memory of how good he is. Tape has such a continuity to the sound that it complements his type of playing. I don't recall his cds that I've heard being mastered that well. For years I played the cassette of The Allman Brothers greatest hits instead of the cd, as it was obviously more natural sounding and mastered better. I don't think Decade (one of the best & most generous greatest hits compa ever) will ever be released on lp, unless they relleaae it as a double lp. There are so many great unknown electric guitarists in jazz and jazz fusion, that made a cd (geat ones too), and that was it.
Some things I have to mention. 1 Price? It's not really budget priced so more geared to use with MC. So you really should test this with an MC. Difference between MM and MC input is usually quite big (hence you want the transformer). 2 demagnetizing is not advisable. Opinions are devided but not the least are advising against it (AJ vd Hul) 3 A rumble filter is silly in this price bracket. A decent TT bearing does not rumble. And whats the effect on phase coherence? I have the Gold Note PH10, same price but much more elegant. No mono or demag, but I dont use them anyway, I have a true mono MC on the second input.
I'd love to have tried this with an MC - simply unable to do so financially at the moment. Can you point me to the AJ & Hul reference (would like to learn more).
I was intrigued by this when I bought my TEAC TN-5BB turntable, but I didn't need an external phono pre-amp since my Yamaha A-S3200 integrated amp has a great one built in for MM & MC. But when I got my Willsenton R8 tube amp I needed one. With my TEAC table and Yamaha amp I could use balanced XLRs so I wanted that ability. The PE-505 was a little too big for where I have to fit it, so I went with a Pro-Ject DS3B instead. I can run the XLRs to the Yamaha and the RCAs to the Willsenton and switch between amps with the Pro-Ject, and I don't think you can do that with the TEAC. Besides that the DS3B is $800 compared to $2,100 so that helps. That said, I'd still like to have the TEAC.
So true, Chris! Although the Aric Audio phono stage is now a permanent fixture in my main room I am constantly running into great components like this.

I saw this review & wondered Teac & vinyl, what's going on? I had no idea they now had a turntable as well. Back in the day they were mainly known for tape decks. This unit looks very, very interesting, I currently have a Puffin phono preamplifier which I like because of some similar features to the Teac but, know thinking of trying this one out with my Technics & Nagaoka 200 cartridge. I am wondering on a different component subject than your channel if Teac is thinking on reentering the Reel to Reel market again since that is having a comeback & no one is selling new more affordable ones. I am glad I discovered your channel today, & will take a look at you other videos!
Hi Peter- glad you're here! I had a Tascam 4-track back in the late 90s (still have it). It would be great if TEAC got back into the reel-to-reel gear.

Obviously built in the same factory using the same parts as Monoprice and several no name entry level products. P.S. I bought the new Uturn Orbit with the upgraded OA3 arm instead. I’ll take USA made products everyday of the week, I want my money to buy quality I can count on.

@@Jeep_on_audio Everybody is entitled to an opinion. Many audio reviewers that l trust have seen it have a positive effect. It does not have to be done very often. There are different types of magnets.
Even moving coils have a magnet, but the magnet is not on the end of the cantilever. Seems like its not only myself who has seen that A.J. On the subect of high-output MC, I got one many years ago (an early gen Ultimo/Dynavector 10x), and I loved it. But I think that if you really want to fully get what MC is all about, you should go for a low-output one, as they have the lowest mass coils and should hopefully show MC resolution in the best light. (And yes, TRB are great!)
So I am wondering where you got the one you reviewed? I did a quick search online I found several on eBay but they all are in Japan, England or Italy. Moon Audio lists it as for sale but about $500 more than the eBay ones which seem mostly listed as used.
That was actually sent to me by TEAC to look at it. Had to ship it back this week. It's relatively new so I suspect we will soon see it in the usual retail spots since they are the ones who reached out for the review.
G Good video Rick. I've thought about moving coil cartridges, but am turned off by the cost and the fact that the stylus isn't user replaceable. From what I understand, you have to return the cartridge to the manufacturer to have the stylus replaced and that can cost as much as the cartridge. Did I hear wrong?.
A new stylus for an MM costs about 80% of a new cartridge. Also; there are a lot more retippers than the company itself. Often cheaper too. You can get really good MC's for $250 already. So none of that really holds up in court.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords the Hana line is very good, The EL is excellent for the price but when I upgraded to the SL it was a huge upgrade and sound for the money.
Some MC cartridges that go back to the 1980s had user replaceable stylus. Some of the highly regarded Satin MC cartridges you could just buy a reasonable priced stylus replacement for.So it can be done. And a cartridge I used for many years, the Audio Technica AT35E moving coil had a snap off user replaceable stylus. The 35E was their top of the line moving coil cartridge. It had a plastic body but it itwas shaped so it had all kind of slants and angles to avoid parallell sides, where internal vibration thrives. Not many years after that, serious top cartridges were being made out of metal which is less vibratory. I remember improving the 35E cartridges performance up about 70% which would have probably put it in the performance class of the best moving coils of the day. The top moving coil of that era was considered to be the Audioquest 7000 cartridge. I brought the AT cartridges performance up by damping the cartridges shell. It improved every aspect of the sound including tracking. Also right around that time cartridges without bodies like the Sumiko Blue Point came onto market. Degradation of sound by the cartridge shell resonances started being realized and examined. Van den Hul cartridges without the conventional shell probably superceded the Suniko Blue Point. Didn't like the Blue Point. I was a lucky young man, about equaling the performance of the $1700 Audioquest cartridge with my modified top of the line AT cartridge, which I got mail order for over 50% off...for $125 from Lyle cartridges. It was a great moving coil cartridge once its shell resonances were tamed
What are the differences to the Arid PS? -- Re demagnetization, I am a bit baffled. There are permanent magnets in moving magnet (!) or moving coil (=fixed magnets !) carts. Those should definitely NOT be demagnetized as otherwise there will be no more sound. The other metal in the cart is copper (maybe silver in expensive ones) in the coils. But neither copper nor silver can be permanently magnetized. Ditto for boron or diamond cantilever. So the question is, what except the intentional permanent magnets in the carts can get magnetized? I do use demag function on my scanning electron microscope (hysteresis removal) but there non-permanently magnetized iron cores are magnetized by electrical current, and after a while those iron cores can get slightly permanently magnetized, and that can have negative effects on the electron beam. So I wonder whether that TEAC demag is a solution in search of a non-existent problem.
