Those clouds were so dark that day, as I remember feeling my heart beating like crazy just hearing it going off. I thought I was going freeze like a statue.
@@gian3248 yes the tone is smooth. The wind down is the same actually as that modulator is on an MC controller and ATI controllers have the same wind down peak but they stop once they reached the lowest peak and wind up again to 850Hz peak
My mom friend told me the tornado hit on the eastside of Naperville Woodridge and Darien IL destroy the houses and the towns. Her house wasn't destroy.

What your referring to is the alternate wail tone. Chicagos Federal Signal Modulator sirens used to do that for tornado warnings. I think they changed it because it may have been to creepy, and last time they used that sound during a tornado warning, some people were confused on what it was because they don’t do that creepy sound during tests, so yes I think that’s why they changed it for tornado warnings

@@jaymesmerritt5145 i know why they stopped most likely, and the reason they can't do fast wail on the 2001s anymore is because if they send tones out for the 2001s to perform in fast wail the modulator's would unfortunately go off in alternate wail as they are programmed to do that if the 2001s go off in fast wail instead of attack. so now it's all wail/attack for that reason.

I was there a few months ago and saw it a bit north (water to the right side) of this shot kinda near the northwest corner of that short building in the distance just east of where the bean sculpture would be, directly in front of the super tall white office tower, which I figured out is called the Aon center. I bet that’s the 2001 that’s audible in this video.

No, that’s what hurricanes are… very large storms with an eye at the center and are hundreds of miles across. Tornados are usually less than a mile wide and carve a path up to a mile or two long if they touch down to the ground. These today were apparently a funnel cloud at altitude. On the ground, it was likely a very severe thunderstorm with winds strong enough to down trees or power lines. For a sense of scale, last week one touched down in the suburbs and destroyed about 25 houses.

Just like when you unplug a train, the funnel doesn’t always go all the way down, but a warning is triggered as soon as that funnel forms as it could be moments away from touching down. Watches are lower level warnings that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. I think we got luck and didn’t get touchdown.

@Dylan Johnson yeah agreed, but still if there was an actual tornado warning then the sirens would be scary, but if it was a test then not so much. But I believe in this video there was a tornado warning but I don’t think one touched down. I think they saw rotation in the clouds or something.
