  • The Blackbird Simulations Cessna 310R in Microsoft Flight Simulator has received a service pack that fixes all manner of small bugs in the aircraft. I take it for a quick flight to see if it's still as good as I remember (it is!).

    Good video. Since I live in the USA, I do most of my sim flying there. My favorite states for scenery are Utah, Alaska and Hawaii. A nice tour of Utah is KGJT--KSGU--KEKO--KSLC--KPUC. In Alaska, most of the spectacular mountains and glaciers are within 100 miles of PANC. If you like volcanic mountains, then a good trip is flying from one island to the next from PANC all the way out the Aleutians to PATU.

    I 'flew' this in FSX, P3D and now in MSFS. Such a fabulous aircraft to fly. I'm currently parked up at Delhi Airport VIDP on an Eastwards trip down to 'see' some friends in Rotorua NZRO from Elstree EGTR. I just wish that Microsoft/Asobo would get their finger out and get the update available in the Marketplace!
    Edit: The following day, I opened MSFS, checked my Profile and sure enough there was SP1. Great stuff. Well done MS/Asobo - and Blackbird as well of course!

    Yes, this a great plane. It's one of my main rides in FSE (the other being a TBM). The C310R can carry full seats with full fuel and, leaned out using that wonderful fuel flow gauge, I can get 1100-1200nm from MTOW cruising at about 195kn groundspeed +/- the wind and burning about 10gph/side. Good thing the engines sound so nice as such trips are 5-6 hours :D.
    I have a few quibbles about technique here. From the manual, the cowl flaps vary automatically with speed so should be pushed in before engine start and left that way the whole flight. There's really no reason ever to close them because they're internal, behind the louvred panels on the nacelles, so mice can't get in there anyway. The flaps are split so really function only as airbrakes. Don't use them for takeoff at all (even at MTOW on a fairly short and reasonably high field). The 1st notch is to let you ride down the glideslope at 95 IAS while maintaining 15" MP (bottom of the green). Only use full flaps if as temporary extra braking if you're too high. And keep all 15" MP until the flare. You can't land with much nose-up or you'll hit the low-hanging boarding ladder, which goes up and down with the gear. So ride the power all the way down, start the (very small) flare, THEN reduce throttle at an altitude measured in inches. The mains should hit about 1/4 second before the nosewheel, which is the only way to land smoothly. The gear struts are very stiff due to the low-hanging boarding ladder so you must make contact almost level, just a hair nose-up, basically painting it on.
    Anyway, I don't know anything about MilViz becoming Blackbird, and SP1 isn't yet available on MSFS Marketplace, which is where I got my C310R. But this is one of my favorite planes either way.

    If you want to add some realism to your fligt:
    After startup you check oil press, vacuum, alternator load.
    You never start leaning the engine with full throttle at such low altitude.
    Generally when reducing power you start from throttle first then props and mixture last.
    When increasing you do mixture rich first.

      I say in quite a lot of my videos that I don't do the procedural checks *because it's a simulator* (and because Carenado aircraft don't model ANY of that). The black square aircraft on the other hand... lol

    I have both the 310 and 414. Both excellent. I guess I have to wait for the update as I purchased the 310 in the Marketplace. This plane does sink like a stone upon landing and I wonder if that is realistic... but what you said, I guess it is. I like flying this plane with the dual GTN 750 in the panels and a third from the dropdown menu. The 310 has in-cockpit WWT (Working Title Technology) to manage autopilot with the 750s. Now, Jonathan, if I can't fly this plane with three GTN 750s, I better hang it up! LOL. Of note though, I like the recent update on the 530 where it was telling you when it was going to turn.

      @TheBullethead ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IRL, the C310 cannot maintain altitude on 1 engine with the gear down so, yeah, even with both engines, she's verging on brick mode all through the approach. Landing this plane smoothly takes some practice and also some paranoia because of how tight the envelope is in this phase. I did a BUNCH of autopilot ILS and then nonprecision RNAV approaches on clear days before I dared try landing totally by hand. This was to learn proper speed and power management, how and when to flare, and to get my eye calibrated for the glideslope angle and approach speed. But once you get used to it, landing the C310 is no harder than anything else. It's just different. And you need to know and have as non-thinking reflex what to do if you lose an engine at various key points along the approach, because you don't have time to think things through.

    ...a good presentation indeed of this magnificent light twin. I particularly like the graphics, the realistic sounds of the engines and the working systems. However I noted with interest that when you pulled back on prop and mixture levers for port engine it didn't stop; is that something that could be fixed to enable somebody practice asymmetric flight?

    Hi Jonathan, I've watched quite a few of your videos now and I do find them informative and very useful (little Navmap being one such example, I'd not heard of it before watching your videos, but boy does it help with the emersive experience!).
    I'm a life long fan of MSFS, but never really taken the whole thing particularly seriously, but recently I have been inclined to do that and do things right. Can you give some tips as to what is the best way to get started with the sim, I don't mean how to take off, fly and land, I mean what are the best planes to start out with, what routes should I practice (short, medium etc.). Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I'm sure, won't just help me.
    There is so much in a flight sim that it can be quite overwhelming for the beginner, once out of the training (there is no real guidance after that). Also, what assistance options settings do you recommend (or use yourself).
    Cheers and do keep up the good work.

    • @jeremyrotalsky8969
      @jeremyrotalsky8969 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A feathered prop shouldn’t stop windmilling. The point of feathering is to reduce drag. A prop that is stopped is not feathered and is inducing drag. It takes more than just looking at a prop to confirm the engine has failed. You cannot even rely on manifold pressure since there is still air moving through the cylinders.

      @@jonbeckett because what other yardstick exists against which to measure the value? I accept it is purely subjective whether you feel the price is reasonable, but do you, as a prolific youtuber, get the same value from owning the game as you do from owning that one aircraft? For me, the value proposition is very different because I've only just bought the game and have yet to experience flying anything other than a basic Cessna. But despite the difference, I would find it hard to justify £40 for something that has no intrinsic value, nor any value at all outside the game. I think this is a discussion for in the pub. If only I had time for the pub now I own the sim!

    I'm not a huge fan of this aircraft. A lot of the buttons are hard to use with the mouse. The heading bug isn't very visible on the HSI. And worst of all, the flight dynamics need a lot of work. In an actual 310, when I roll off the throttle to land, I still have elevator authority and I am able to raise the nose and flare. With this model, the aircraft turns into a brick as soon as the power is reduced. This effects stalls and single-engine operations as well as landings. And that's a deal breaker for me. Sure, the graphics and sounds are nice. But I bought the plane to fly it. And now since the update, the engines will not stay running for me after startup. So over all, I'm not impressed. And that's too bad because I was really looking forward to it.
