I hope to see you in one of the GROUP LESSONS at the end of this month. It's going to be sooooo fun!! Here's the link: lessonswithquincydavis.as.me/schedule/67f30ec3.
The really great thing about jazz playing with the emphasis on the hi hats and ride, is that you can stay in the groove while transitioning to and from the brushes. Make the change sound like it belongs there! I switched from rock to jazz in the late 60's and I'm still learning new "old" stuff. Quincy, you are the master of cool without an attitude. Your videos are the best!
OUTSTANDING lesson! Been working on this for years searching for a method that works best for me. I have studied Jeff Hamilton a lot, as he is a Master at switching back and forth smoothly.
This is the most comprehensive video I've seen on this important and often overlooked subject. Well done! Is there a particular reason you prefer snares off for brushes?
Thanks for the kind words! I prefer snares off because I like to hear the tone of the drum when I hit it. I sometimes use snares on when I need more volume.
Great tip!!! I have been switching between sticks and brushes for many years and really never thought about it too much. I pretty much do the same things with either the floor Tom or bass drum depending upon the song and tempo. I also utilize other things that may be sitting next to my floor tom, such as a drum case😊
Glad it was helpful and thanks for sharing your method. Btw, I hope you consider joining one or more of the group lessons in few weeks. Link in the description box.
On some Jimmy Cobb recordings he switches so perfectly I’m thinking it’s a punch in. lol just kidding of course. He was a master and one of my all time favorites. Also, Jack DeJohnette makes some incredible switches on Chris Potter’s Unspoken album. That album? Holy cow! Get it if you don’t have it. Switching from sticks to brushes also is nice for bass solos. Then I can keep the intensity with less volume. Great lesson! FP
Thanks man - I'm almost there, and do the same thing with sticks and brushes. But not so many years ago I made the "pause" while shifting from brushes to sticks. Practice works :D P.S: Love your humming - like a little Elvin.
@@drumqtips I will do later - maybe a solo lesson. Right now I have some playing and some holliday. I have fast internet, but not professionel camera/mics - so that could be a problem. :D
Thanks for the tip on switching . I’ve sometimes put either the sticks or brushes under my left , but that’s a little awkward. Your method seems a lot better. Hey, the RIJF just finished last week; 9 days (actually evenings) of great music and meeting people. It would be wonderful to meet you and hear you play in person. Thanks!
Great Q, I already experiment with the same tricks. But what if you set up the floor tom with a little bit of angle towards you? Then the brush moves a way. So you need to put your floor tom straight. Its tricky ;-)
@@drumqtips - Thanks for the info, Quincy! By the way, if you ever play a gig out here in Honolulu, I’d be happy to provide drums for you. I’ve loaned out my Gretsch Round Badge bebop kit to many players including Brian Blade and Marcus Gilmore in the past. Aloha!
@@drumqtips yes it certainly helped a lot, just to see you having a completely different approach to that thing. It‘s like, i don‘t even need to practice the way you‘re doing it, its more like, why the heck didn‘t i come up with that solution myself. So thank you and really appreciate your lessons, especially when they are about that stuff, that normal music college teachers tend to forget.

My main man! Thanks Boom💣
Thanks, Dr. Q! You’ve solved something that I’ve long thought of as a drumming mystery. Also… “gotta practice this or else you’re screwed.” 😂😂
Glad you enjoyed this one my man!
A fun little trick I like to use is to bend the loops at the end of the brushes to a 90 degree angle and hang them off the lugs of my floor tom!
Very cool little trick!
That’s a really good idea

Glad it was helpful T 🚗! Hammer is very slick with his stick changes.

Thank you for this lesson. I have often struggled with getting a smooth transition from sticks to brushes and vice versa. This lesson is a big help!

I’ve been playing drums for a long time and I never thought of resting the brushes on the floor tom rim. Genius! Simple and practical. Thanks, Quincy!
Happy this helped my man! Hope you consider joint one or more of the group lessons!
Quincy, that was pretty slick how you switched from sticks to brushes. I found a way myself, but I like the you did it better. Very cool .

I luv your brush playing so much man 🥁🔥🖌 the transitions are so smooth and legato 🙌 goosebumpy 🎉
I appreciate that my man!
the subject I've been waiting for without expecting it
Hey Quincy, from Ned in Spain. Thank you man for another great video lesson and the opportunity to see you doin it right.
All my pleasure brother Ned! Cheers!!

Perfect! Thanks Q. I've seen drummers place brushes on the snare similar to what you do on floor tom.
Oh yeah that could work too. Btw, I hope you consider joining one or more of the group lessons in few weeks.

Super handy practical gig info …thanks so much
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Quincy! I really needed this as I've always struggled with this exact thing.
So glad this helped my man!
Stealing that at :31, always inspiring!
Thanks Chris!
Gotta practice this... True story! Thx for the tips!
Have fun Jeremy!
I've always had a problem with brushes, so I peeped your technique, Q! There always seems to be so many brush patterns.
Have a look at the brush lessons I’ve put out if you haven’t yet. That may help you even more. Cheers my man!
Dig the PJJ setup ;) Sounding good as always!
Nice work...Do Jimmy Cobb so what in Miles davis, switch
Yes his switch in So What is great!
Solid . 💥💥💥

Definitely hope to meet you in person! Thanks for the watch as always my friend!
Great video man, do you think you can do a video on the 3-bar cycle?
I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by a 3-bar cycle. Could you please elaborate? Thanks for watching!
Great Q, I already experiment with the same tricks. But what if you set up the floor tom with a little bit of angle towards you? Then the brush moves a way. So you need to put your floor tom straight. Its tricky ;-)
Yeah the angle that the floor tom leans does make a huge difference if this method could work or not.
Great lesson! How do you do those hihat splashes?
I just tap the foot pedal without pussing all the way down. Glad you enjoyed the lesson.
2:16 your German pronunciation is great 😂 🇩🇪
Ha🤣. Danke!
How come you did not "splash" hi.hat with faster tempos???
I’m not sure I understand your question. Could you clarify?
@@drumqtips Dear Master, after six measures, using faster tempos, you stop using your hi_hat with a "splash" sound.
@@giadagiaguaroAt what point of the video?
Would you say that the majority of jazz drummers prefer playing brushes with the snares off?
Not at all! I think most play with snares of factually. But many of my personal faves play with the snares off.

Just here for the part were you go from the sticks back to the brushes, that‘s what i always think is much more difficult to manage
Yeah that certainly is very tricky Dennis! Hope this helped.
