    Regarding B12 absorption, it is a good habit to NOT drink liquids with your meals. Hydrate in between meals and not with your meals(stop 30 minutes before and wait 1 hour after). Drinking with meals greatly hinders digestion and lowers/dilutes your hydrochloric acid therefore it lowers the intrinsic factor need for B12 absorption.

      OMG...you took the words right out of my mouth!!!! What I've been telling people for YEARS!!! in fact, I had to check and see if I didn't write this comment myself 😅
      I had heartburn for over 20 years. It had gotten so bad, I was taking nexium. Visited a TCM Doctor (Dr. Dong) she told me, stop drinking 30 Minutes before a meal, and wait 60 Minutes after a meal to start drinking.
      In a matter of DAYS....heartburn gone, and that was 10 years ago.
      Saves money in restaurants too! 🤣

    A little off topic, but I would love a show on Aflatoxins. I live in a country where food safety is pretty good (CH), but when I look at the sheer amount of grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, spices, and everything else on the shelves of a single big health food store here, I can't possibly imagine how they monitor all of the food coming in to this country, imported, or grown here. I have a hard time believing that it's all safe. I don't eat high aflatoxin foods - only, and occasional brown rice and non GMO organic soy - I'm on a vegan Okinawa diet - but I am still concerned for friends and family. A show on this topic would be great. Excellent show. Thank you.

    Thank you for mentioning the damage done to arteries and the brain by saturated fat and how calorific a gram of fat is versus a gram of carbohydrates.. A work colleague thinks his saturated fat-rich diet can be mitigated by how active he is throughout the day at work so I will explain these facts to him and hopefully get him to cut down on animal products.
    I am so very grateful that all the research on how healthy and vital unprocessed plant-based diets are for human health and well-being is patiently explained in a way that we can all understand, and for free. This is truly philanthropic work.
    I work in a hospital and cycle for 2 hours every day to go to and from work and then am on my feet for hours. People wonder how I do it. The only way I can do it is because I am on a wholefood, plant-based diet. I don't miss the highly processed vegan foods I was eating before. Now I have lost weight, and people are amazed that I am nearly fifty and doing what I do day in and day out. Of course I also maintain adequate hydration which is also very important. Thank you to all at #examroomlive for looking out for our health.

      Thank you @Baby Cakes for the comment. From my experience working in England, people are working horrible hours and not getting time to cook from scratch and being tempted to eat unhealthy food at work. They are tired and so will have low resistance to anything on offer. Some smoke and drink alcohol to relieve stress. I cook on my days off and freeze or refrigerate food or simply open a can of unsalted beans and take to work with raw vegetables and fruit. I also like eating a handful of nuts with a few dates as an energy boost.

    Great QA . Well metamucil aka made from psyllium husk is not as such a fiber compared to fruits and vegetables (which have vitamins) as it's an empty fibre more of a therapeutic plant based gelatin, used mainly to relieve constipation. In ayurvedic sciences, its said to soothe the dryness in the intestines, balance the level of air water and heat inside the body. Similarly coconut oil has been used in almost every dish and curry(1 tsp per curry made for whole family) from India's southern side, it's not bad at all because they are not drinking it as such in gallons as an MCT oil or what!

    Any information regarding collagen supplementing?

    • @hannahrl
      @hannahrl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You 100% should not. Collagen is just a protein, formed of amino acids, broken down upon digestion and reassembled as needed in the body - or passed via the kidneys, as is all excess protein over about 10% calories. It absolutelybis not carried as a whole molecule yo your own connective tissues and just installed, as supplement companies would have you believe. A reasonably varied diet of whole plants provides all the protein the human animal needs, easily employed as collagen where needed in the body.

    Dr. Barnard, I have read the areas that are colder, with longer winter, northern, have been found to have elevated cases of skin cancer because the Sun reflects off the snow, giving more Sun exposure, and damage. So even though we are getting more Sun exposure, we are told to wear sunblock on our face, ears, hands if we're in those areas and we spend time outside in the winter months. Is this accurate? It was reported, Florida had less in comparison. This is in reference to the Vit D conversation.

    About algae, I regularly eat wakame or dulse, but I don't understand how they should be consumed properly...I mean, I have been told I should soak it in water for a while, but doing that, doesn't iodine leak out in the water (together with other minerals) ? I'm confused...

    • @m.taylor
      @m.taylor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know the degree of minerals that leak out while soaking seaweed, but dulse needs no soaking.
      Wakame only needs 5 minutes of soaking in water (but no soaking if adding to wet dishes such as soup) and the soaking water can be used except for any grit that settles to the bottom. Most packaged wakame is precooked so it can even be snacked on as is.

      Lemon juice will add flavor, but will not help with absorbing the fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A and vitamin K. You need fat from things such as olive oil, avocado, tahini, etc. It's not that the salad needs dressing, it's that it needs some source of fat in it.

    20:50 frozen berries (and most other fruit) are better than fresh. Frozen veggies (like broccoli) are pasteurized which destroys the enzyme that combines with glucoraphinin to make the cancer-fighting sulforaphane. Get your veggies fresh. I like to buy collards, kale, and broccoli fresh and chop them up at home and freeze them for later cooking or smoothies.

      That is complete nonsense. I eat 400-800 grams of carbohydrates a day and I don't workout and I am 5'8" and 120 pounds or 55kg. Carbs with a lot oil or animal fat mixed in may make you fat. Not carbs alone

    • @MindVersusMisery
      @MindVersusMisery 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The science does not support that notion. And I find it troublesome that highly educated people - like doctors - fail to differentiate between processed/refined sugars and carbs from whole foods.
      But... Let me make three points about this topic
      1) Excess calories make you fat, and carbs are 4 calories per gram and fats are 9 calories per gram. This is of course only one component of the equation, but if you just look at caloric content you will see that fatty foods makes you more prone to overshoot your caloric needs.
      2) When you eat carbohydrate rich foods in their whole form, you also consume a lot of water and fibre in these foods which doesn't contain calories, but fills you up nonetheless. So it makes you full but doesn't provide a lot of calories.
      3) Societies that eat more plants, i.e. more carbs, have less problems with obesity than societies that eat more animal products. One scientific example of this is the Adventist health study 2 where they compared health conscious meat eaters to health conscious semivegetarians, pescetarians, lactoovovegetarians and vegans. In that study you can see a stepwise drop in BMI with each step toward a more plant based diet. The vegans where the only diet group in that study that didn't fall in the range of overweight.

      What links or resources do the "trusted" drs have?

    • @broddr
      @broddr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Calories make you fat. De novo lipogenesis, the process of turning carbs into fats in your body, is very inefficient. And your body prefers to run on carbohydrates. So if you eat too much carbs, your body will store every bit of fat from your diet into fat, muscle, and liver cells.
      So the goal should be to eat enough carbs to fuel your body and only enough fats to help absorb fat soluble vitamins. And make sure that a large portion of those fats are the essential fatty acids: omega 3 and omega 6. Those are plentiful in plants, especially nuts and seeds. But even green vegetables have fats, e.g. broccoli is 0.4% fat, almost all with the health promoting omega 3 fatty acid ALA.

The dentist had to wait until her Covid quarantine was clear, so it delayed treatment. She is having trouble putting weight back on. • @MindVersusMisery
      @MindVersusMisery 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your moms goal is to put on weight then nut butters are a better option than whole nuts, because the body absorbs more of the calories. The same goes for ground up seeds compared to whole seeds.

      Were you eating a large amount of raw food? Sometimes lots of raw food can make someone feel cooler. I don't know about the smaller veins, but did you feel like it was a bad thing? The only way to tell of you are deficit is to get lab work done...Best to get tested now and then after a few months on the new diet to see how things are changing; if you only do once and some lab result is too high or low, you might blame the vegan diet without considering that the lab result could have been above/below healthy levels prior to the diet change. It's a learning process, most any deficiency can be corrected through a whole food plant based diet (only exception is you should take B-12, which is also---by the way--a supplement given to agricultural animals...which is why meat has B-12).
