    Thanks for the real use demo. I play out 4 to 5 times a week. I was thinking of bagging my Apex AX-48 2-tier stand which has issues.
    1) Tightening the tiers,
    2) When packing up having legs folding misaligning or missing the stop clip and falling inside the casing.
    3) Bottom cross bar forces one use small square sustain pedals as the longer sustain pedals protude too far out. So...
    With the K&M, I see that the raised center base allows for a longer sustain pedal and the height adjustment is even and secure. But...
    1) You lose your kybd height settings every time you pack up the stand.
    2) As opposed to the Apex, which folds to an almost flat tube, this stand when closed has protuded legs and arms, no where near as flush and no handle to carry. But it is self contained as one connected unit.
    3) the mandatory 15 degree 2nd tier might not work for some, which buying another flat one adds to the already significantly higher price-point over the other stands.
    In conclusion, it's a tradeoff with significant flaws for the only 2 practical and portable 2 tier stands out there for the steadily working musician.

      Hi Bruce thanks for the comment. I still have my Apex AX-48 and use it mostly in my studio. When I used travel with the Apex, I liked that it had a carrying handle and that I didn't need a carrying bag. Although a bag would have been nice and would have prevented my Apex from getting scratched up. Having both the Apex and the K&M, I now use my K&M almost every time I play out and about 50% of the times I rehearse. That ends up being about 2~3 times/week when I'm not on tour. It's my primary stand when I tour.
      ====================================
      Concerning your issues with the APEX:
      for "1) Tightening the tiers" - I usually keep my keyboards at the same height. I just try to tighten the tiers with minimal force so that readjusting them isn't difficult.
      for "2) When packing..." - I turn the stand upside-down, make sure the base legs are completely vertical, and then let gravity drop them into their storage positions. I understand the stop clip issue, but I don't run into the problem myself
      for "3) Bottom cross bar..." - If I want to use a longer sustain pedal, I'll set it sideways
      ====================================
      Concerning the K&M issues:
      1) I use tape and mark it with a sharpie to show where to setup the keyboard height. I've even used that method on tour and my backline tech sets up the stand the same way every time.
      2) I agree with you there. I have no solution/improvement/suggestion concerning how it folds up. I do highly recommend the carrying bag for the K&M.
      3) I think Stay makes a pretty good 2 tier stand. It does require a bit of a setup and the distribution of the product is limited, but it's light (depending on the model), relatively sturdy, has continuously variable height, versatile with its configurations, and reasonably priced. I also like the On Stage deluxe heavy duty 2 tier stand. It's well distributed, it's very sturdy, it's indestructible, and it's on the less expensive side of 2 tier stands. The downsides are that it's heavy and clunky and it doesn't have continuously adjustable tiers.
      - Joe

    Ended up buying this stand and it's great (see my other comment below.) There's no problem with it leaning back. It's also very solid. I will also say that it's a very, very nice looking stand. The only stand I've ever seen that I thought looked better is that ultra futuristic tilted stand that Depeche Mode/Duran Duran used on their Rolands/EMU's back in the early 80's - which, I have no idea what that would have been. If you watch some of their live performance videos from back then, you'll see that stand (other times, they're just using those hideous "ironing board" stands.) For fun, if anyone knows what those angled stands were, I'd love to know. They looked VERY heavy.

    After a while, the arms can no longer be pulled out because the strain, the pressure from pressing the keys deforms the extension arms. It looks good, but it is Not reliable. Especially when you change keyboards of different weights.

    I have my Spider Pro for a little over 5 years and it is a little worn out, but all joints are working perfectly!
    Although mine is also the "PRO" version I noticed some details different from yours, in mine the "SPIDER PRO" logo is all painted, in its case only the edges of the word were drawn, probably mine was one of the first in the PRO version , yours is more updated!
    Congratulations on your beautiful purchase!
    It is the most beautiful keyboard support in the world!
    I have never tested the APEX AX-90 yet, it seems to be more robust .. do you know this one?

    • @joecosas
      @joecosas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m glad the Spider Pro is working out for you! That’s great to hear.
      The APEX AX-90 is definitely a solid stand. I almost got it several years back, but I opted not to because of it’s weight (40 lbs.), bulkiness, and awkwardness when carrying it. For me, those factors were just too significant of a trade off for its stability and look.

  • @backntime9654

    Jumbo Jones: I have the K & M spider pro stand. The buttons to adjust the are length on one of the arms do not work to finger tip touch, so I need to use a key or a Phillips screw driver to adjust the arm length, rather than just finger touch as shown on the video. Also the rubber tips on the top arms do not fit well on my stand in the metal column when folding the stand up, or taking it down. These problems in a relatively little used stand made it difficult for gig use, plus the weight of transport and time in putting it into the carrying bag are not easy. It is sturdy once you get it set up. I gave up on it for gigs, and retired it to my studio, where I can just set it up and leave it standing. If you get one, hope it works better than mine.

    • @joecosas
      @joecosas  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you. I sometimes use my pinky finger or fingernail to depress the button to adjust the arm length. I can see how it can be challenging if the button is too small or if they're not engaging properly.
      Yes, the top tier of my stand doesn't retract completely into the column body either. That's a design compromise since the angled arms need a way to keep keyboards from sliding off. If you change out the top tier arms with the arms that are flat (as opposed to the angled ones) they retract fully into the column body.
      I had an apex stand that I never used a case for. That eliminated the time and effort to place it in a bag (not really a big deal, but another step). I paint got pretty scratched up though.
      I love it as a studio stand! It leaves plenty of floor real estate and it's functional and versatile!

    One thing - it DOES appear to be tilting away. Is that just a matter of perspective, or is it actually tilting back? If so, that would drive me nuts. If anyone knows the answer I'd greatly appreciate hearing something, as I'm seriously considering this. Is the lower shelf actually level, or is it tilting away? Thanks! (Great review, by the way!!)

    • @joecosas

      Thanks for checking out the video!
      I’ve had the stand a while now and either it’s leveled out (through use) and/or I’ve gotten used to the angle. I now use a Nord Stage 3 on the K&M on a weekly basis and I haven’t noticed anything unusual about the angle. For comparison, I use a Roland RD-2000 on an Onstage stand, a Yamaha MOXF8 on a Proline stand, and a Yamaha P 85 & Moog Sub 37 on an Ultimate AX-48 on the weekly and nothing sticks out when I use the K&M. I also tour and do 1-offs on other rigs and the K&M angle is fine in comparison. My 1st month in using the K&M was fine. I just definitely noticed that slight angle when I first brought it out of the box.

    • @Berus7777
      @Berus7777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joecosas Thanks for getting back to me - sounds like maybe the K&M is manufactured with a tolerance to allow for just the right amount of settling to occur to make it level after initially being tilted back a bit. Again, it was a great review. Subscribed!

    • @larryfinke6133
      @larryfinke6133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s level. Sometimes if there are screws in the bottom of your keyboard, they can tilt it one way or the other if they rest on the arms. This is so far the best of about 10 stands I’ve owned ver the years for standing with 2 tiers. It’s just a bit on the heavy side.

    Please explain the locking screw mechanism. I gave up on Ultimate stands because the "grapple" that tightens the base block to the vertical frame can come loose. Had a keyboard fall down because of this.

    • @joecosas
      @joecosas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Dave. Sorry for the late response. Been busy. I believe the part of the arms that are inside the column, end up “wedging/securing” themselves when put in the horizontal position. I’ve played an entire gig without tightening the screw. I discovered I forgot that step at the end of the night. I always tighten the screw just in case now. I currently use a Nord Stage 3 (41.8 lbs.) and I’ve been known to be a relatively heavy handed player.

      @joecosas  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like B & H Photo Video is selling K & M Spider Pro stands (2-tier) with parallel arms. You should contact B & H to verify this. 866.264.7509 / 212.560.3239
      www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/290521-REG/K_M_18850_000_35_18850_Spider_Keyboard_Stand.html
      You can always purchase another set of arms if you need to change the angle. Changing the arms is easy, but takes time. You have to unscrew 5 screws off the top of the stand and switch out the arms. I think K & M went with this form factor to decrease setup time and to improve stability in the arms.

    • @joecosas
      @joecosas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe so. You can set the bottom tier pretty low. You'll of course need to order the extra stand arms for the 3rd tier. And just a head up, the stand will pack up funny with the extra arms. The body is designed to stow away arms for 2 tiers. You can always take off the extra arms, but it takes a couple minutes to do that.

      @@robwhaling633 It should work. The stand is the tallest column stand that I’m aware of. The stand doesn’t take into account the added height gained when the legs are in place. They add several inches to the height of the column.

      The stand works well for me and my purposes. It withstood 2 US tours and I used it for over 2 years touring in Florida pre-Covid-19 with no issues. The keyboards I use are relatively light (heaviest is 31 lbs.). I feel that double-braced X stands are the most stable/sturdy of all the stands I use, but I prefer the look, portability, cable management, and versatility of the Spider stand.

      @@joecosas I love your review.. You didnt hide anything.. All these reviews show how stable it is and the guy fake shaking it on purpose.. Your video show a stage guy on a hurry to set things up. And this is the most honest review I have seen. Stage guys do everything on a budget and in a very limited time, and that make accidents. In a studio this keybord stand have no right to fail.. In a stage situation. It is probably the best non table/desk based stand ever made. Still I dont trust them drunk sound/stage guys and roadies :D

    Do you find the Spider Pro more superior to the Apex 48?

    • @joecosas
      @joecosas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. The only features/advantages the Apex has over the Spider Pro is the ability to more easily accommodate 3 keyboards/devices and that it's lighter. Concerning everything else, I prefer the Spider. It has a better design, better look, less floor real estate, more versatility with heights, soft plastic clips that are less susceptible to breaking, etc. Also my friends and I have found the legs of the Apex not folding/packing and/or functioning well over time.

    • @RussTobin

      Joe Cosas thanks for clarifying that. Now I know to go with the Spider Pro. It is it much taller than the Apex?

      @@RussTobin Sorry for the delay there. Been busy! The Spider breaks down slightly shorter than the Apex. When the Spider is setup though, it's taller than the Apex. The legs fold out giving it more height.

    Does it wobble at all when you play? Would you say it's study enough confidently do a glissando on organ for example?

    • @joecosas
      @joecosas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. If you're a heavy player, have a heavy organ/keyboard, and are glissing at the ends of the keyboard it will probably be unstable as you would expect. For glisses, the arms are rubber/soft plastic on the top so your keyboard won't slide. As for me, when I play "heavy" when I perform and/or on tour, I'll sometimes just "perform" or be dramatic if the show calls for it and really just play mezzo-forte/forte - as a skilled rock guitarist would execute. Hopefully that makes sense. Hopefully this is helpful John!
