I don't think that Charlie and others were able to articulate well enough what they meant. He is saying is that there are negative assumptions made, pre-judgements made, if you are an American. Brits hate Americans, so this makes sense. It also makes sense because yes, the US isn't a proper "footballing country". But the fact remains, as an individual, there is a stigma to having come from America and therefore you are almost certainly penalized in the minds of the fans, the media, and even coaches.

Then he added the point. Yes earn your respect. But American players are not starting from a level playing field. That comes from a history of producing talent. Something America has not done. Randomly playing loads of US players who are average level over average domestic players would hurt their national team. There's just no incentive to do that. If you excel, you play, it's as simple as that. US players don't get a lot of respect because barely any have excelled in leagues outside the MLS. You earn true respect in sport by winning, not by turning up. Plenty of English players never lived up to their potential and were trashed online and by the media. Not saying it's right, but I'm also not going to argue coaches should pick them if they're not good enough.

Back before the premier league began we had John Harkes in centre midfield, first American to play in a Wembley final and part of what is arguably our greatest side in living memory. Thierry is 100% right about how Arsene was treat btw, I’m old enough to remember the media reaction when he was announced.
I remember him! Arsenal fan here and sure you're referring to the 92-93 season when we played you THREE times at Wembley in two different finals, as the FA Cup was replayed that year. Pretty sure Harkes scored in one of them. And nobody in either team was ever looked at as not being good or valid enough to be there, especially based on background and nationality. To be fair, international players in the NBA were looked down upon for years until the 2000s when Dirk, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol and others proved they could not only hang but be stars and help teams win titles. Key is…in NBA…those players had guys like Don Nelson who ignored the noise and gave them the chance and stuck with them when they had dry spells. That’s the point…no one in England would ever give top level US talent the same opportunity as others. Respect to Clint. I don't think he was ever 'disrespected' and he is thought of pretty fondly by fans of the clubs he played for over here. However, he's probably correct, he might have had to 'show up' a little more than domestic players, but he doesn't shy away from that - there is a reason for that. Clint is honest about that but isn't using it with the same victim mentality Charlie is. You can't turn up from a place which doesn't really invest in the sport the same way the rest of the world does and expect people to immediately take you at face value, you have to prove yourself. The fact is, Clint DID show up, did prove himself, and he was a better player for it.

Henry is right on with the NBA comparison. Europeans gained respect over the years in the NBA and now they are proven. Same will go for football if America can keep sending players to Europe and have a handful of successful ones that win trophies. Then things will change.
As an American, we have not earned respect in football yet. However, we are moving in the right direction. More of our players are heading to Europe. We need to continue not just making the World Cup but performing well. Respect is earned, not given.

As an American, saying our players/ coaches are disrespected is an extreme exaggeration. Is there perhaps a bias towards Americans due to differences in sports culture in our countries? Sure. English football has had players come from every corner of the world to play there. They just want to see good football and win matches. If an American can do that job he will play.

As an Australian I can understand where he's coming from but at the end of the day respect has to be earnt. If you or your nation has no significant history within football relative to other countries than you can't expect people to take you as seriously as proven countries. Friedal was well regarded in England mate, Scouse no1 keeper and still playing in the PL beyond 40. Anyone who achieves that level of career for that long is a very good footballer full stop.
He was alright. Nothing amazing. Played a lot of games and did well at Blackburn. But he’s nowhere near “amazing”. He was never a top 10 keeper in the league if you consider his peak to be around 2000-2003; the best goalkeepers were: Schmeichel (villa & city), Seaman (Arsenal), Westerweld/Dudek (Liverpool), Given (Newcastle), James (Pompey/City), Sulllivan (Spurs), Jones (Saints), Van Der Sar (Fulham), Jaaskelainen (Bolton). Friedel was a decent keeper but he wasn’t at the level of these guys. He was in the next group down along with Sorresen (Sunderland), Poom (Derby), Sereni (Ipswich), an aging Flowers (Leicester), a young Bywater (West Ham), Taylor (B’ham), a very old Ogrizivic (Covvy), Kieley (Charlton).

In football/soccer we do. Which is a weird place to be as an american. But otoh that makes us underdogs as well, which is a positive place. In the olympics we tend to dominate more than any other single nation. Its nice to have a sport where we have to fight and be underdogs, but ofc it comes with a healthy taste of an inferiority complex.

I don't know about landon Donovan though...he ran back to the U.S. the first chance he got. and Tim Howard was good, but he was also a bit overhyped in the 2014 World Cup.

Ask an Everton fan what they think of Landon Donovan, and even after his short stint there they'll rave about him. Also if you watch his Everton games, like actually watch them not quickly google some goal stats, he was a menace to the opposition. He also proved himself on the international level. Even for a large part of Dempsey's prime (and I really love Dempsey) Donovan was the man most feared in national games. In 2002 he won the young player of the tournament award--which is shared by Michael Owen, Lukas Podolski, Thomas Muller, Paul Pobga, Mbappe, etc. He wasthe most respected American international star. I think Pulisic is overtaking him now as a more skilled player and I have my fingers crossed that some of these other young guys like McKennie and Weah who are starting to catch fire surpass him as well.
When Pep came to England, the media was on him like Vultures saying he will never succeed in his style of play in England and look at him now. He kept his head down and kept digging, look at him now. I agree with Henry, it doesnt matter where you from than what you are going to do or show.
@@JJSFC I don't know if you paid attention to the media, especially the commentators and the post conference matches, even the tabloids; they were doubting Pep's style of play and whether it would succeed in England because he wanted possession football which was not a style played in England. He didn't have a great start and the interviewers kept saying he will find it hard because this is the premier league and what not. Its on the internet if you need a refresher. And also when Pep came, the City squad he had was nowhere near any of the squads that came after. City in general was not a big club like it is now and he took it and made it into what it is now which is why they shut up. I don't know where you were in that period where he first came but Pep was highly criticised.

I think some of these people need to learn what disrespect actually means. As Clint said, respect should be earned and not given, and in any top league you need to earn your own respect. In football only two things can give you this, playing well and winning, whether you are the coach or a player. Not having earned that respect yet is not the same as being constantly disrespected. A prime example right now is Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League, he came in as a rather unkown quality. Australia is not particularly well known for it's football heritage, much like the USA, but has had some decent players in the prem over the years, much like the USA. Apart from few a couple good seasons with Celtic (a team that despite being good, has a massive advantage over every other team in Scotland just in terms of it's spending power and talent already available when he walked in the door), he did not have that many accolades before joining Spurs. When he first joined he had not earned the respect yet, and as soon as he started showing his worth and the team was performing well then the fans, media and players have all started showing him respect! There is no reason why an American coach couldn't do the same also with good results.

This is the exact example I was gonna bring up for the other side of the argument. Very very comparable presence in the PL compared to Americans. But when Ange came in, nobody even really mentioned him being Australian apart from him saying "mate" a lot. "American" becomes the identity of the coaches and to some extent the players too until proven otherwise. Ange wasn't "Australian" he was just a unproven manager; it wasn't "can an Australian really manage in the PL?" Ange also doesn't represent the idea of an Australian manager either. If he fails, I highly doubt the next time an Australian manager comes along, you'd hear "well we don't know if they can do it." Bob Bradley effectively set back American coaches just because he didn't work out and every other American manager is like a test case for the rest. Jesse Marsch went to Leeds and he was cast with the same doubts because Bob wasn't a success. The reality, yes everybody has to prove their worth but that's obvious and beside the point really. It's just as though American managers specifically have other things they're criticized for that others aren't. Not even saying that it's a huge thing to overcome but it's another thing on top of the main thing. And who knows, maybe they can't do it for one way or another. Be it fair, they're just not good enough, or unfair where they don't garner the same respect to lead the team who knows. But Brazil doesn't have any managers either and they're pretty fine lol. Sounded like "we weren't good enough to play in a world cup for 40 years, but I'm an entitled American and I want my respect". As an American, it’s not that our players are disrespected, it’s because our youth system favors the rich over talent. In America, If you can’t afford to pay thousands of dollars to play for an elite youth academy, then your dreams are over no matter how good you are. Look at Asian footballers, for a long time we’ve been “looked down on” now it’s getting more common to see Asian footballers in the top leagues.
The system in the US does not favor the rich. Poor American players play other sports. European systems pay for top youth players. The other less quality players pay to play. Pro soccer is relatively new in America and has only recently gotten to place to be able afford to pay to train Academy players.
you have a good point there are more reasons, but that pay to play system which obviously favors players whose parents have money is frowned upon globally, esp when in other countries theyll play with a stuffed sock or some deflated ball and end up being better than some rich kid. So of course an american would have to prove themselves. Charlie also proved his point of not being a student of the game.
As far as US punditry being disrespected, Americans don't help themselves with programs like Morning Footy and Fox's 2022 World Cup coverage- which are/were embarrassing. The most-watched US football media programs contain mostly British casts- CBS's CL coverage, NBC's PL coverage, and ESPN FC's daily show. This is not by chance.
I think the issue is those first you mentioned are trying to be broad like the others. There are other shows that talk about just the region or the US. Which I like myself. The latter ones you mentioned are great for a broad coverage.

Man, I got second-hand embarrassment from Davies for these comments. He's right that the US hasn't played in the World Cup for a long-time. But the reason for disrespect is due to a lack of development and quality in the players trying to make it in Europe, not because of some chip on the shoulder or lack of history.
The core of his point, as badly presented as it was, has some validity. The lack of history and reputation of the US at the time probably did mean that they got taken a little less seriously than a Brazilian would. If we want to take into account about your Concacaf players at United, there are players like Dwight Yorke and Javier Hernandez who may not be legends at United, but were loved and are still known for their time there. For a U.S coach, it will take one who is a big success in the EPL to break the stigma. Wenger did have that stigma when he arrived with fans and media, but his success opened the door for french and European managers.

To be fair I think there is a little bit of disrespect towards Americans. Or maybe not disrespect but it's hard to take Americans in football seriously. Football is the biggest sport in the world, the biggest sport in several countries. And the biggest sport culture in the world and in many countries. And Known globally as football. But that's not the case in America. You're pretty much the only country in the world who has their own independent sports culture. You have American football, Basketball, baseball and hockey. Which are huge in America but aren't as big elsewhere and I don't think they're truely global, atleast no where near the scale of other sports. And your league has a structure that is great from a commercial point of view but just doesn't fit in with the nature of football in general it's about promotion and relegation. So when an American player or manager turns up, talking about football and especially calling it "soccer" giving something the biggest sport on the planet known globally as football its own name. But I also think Americans have been a victim of their own sport culture. Football didn't properly catch on there until quite recently. But I think things are changing and America is for sure making a name for itself. Done of your greatest talent has come all at once and in the last few years. You have a good number of players playing in big European leagues and at top clubs. You're international team is alot better and can compete. Not sure what it's like in America itself but I definitely feel like football is getting bigger there.

The problem is in US that right talents are not promoted. Players who represent America are not the best talents. I have been experiencing this lats 3 years for my son. Coaches are too focus on physicality in early ages rather than technical skills, talented soccer IQ high players. Physical players cannot improve their technical skills and game IQ later (these are hard or impossible traits to improve if you do not have until 15 years old). Physicality can be improved easily later. Priorities of coaches do not help America to shine in soccer. If Messi was a boy in America I am sure that he would not selected by coaches U13 competition team. This explains why America does not have soccer stars whereas it dominates in all other sports. I am sorry about this and I am struggling for my 13 years old son last 3 years.

The football culture in the US is not the same as in Argentina, England, Germany, etc. Another thing is the style of Americans in football. in America football tends to be very physical rather than technical, most likely due to the fact of other sports, such as American football, where there’s a huge emphasis on physicality. The American youth is also just recently getting more into football I think because of people like speed who have increased the popularity of football among the youth. To end off, I think football is growing in the United States. It’ll take time to get to the level of European football. Regardless, the football mind of the American footballer needs to improve there needs to be more emphasis on the team, how the team connects passes, how to read the game, how to be more creative with the ball (like they do in Brazil) and the teams performance rather than individual physicality and individual performances. (sidenote, you won’t see MLS teams, nor United States national team play like Brazil plays where they anticipate movement where they defend with an idea to switch to offense, with an extra bit of flare. Rather, you’ll see the United States teams hit long balls just clear with no intention of getting anything out of it, Wild errors from defense. You won’t see pulisic like Leo, or Mbappé. It’s just that the American football IQ is just not up to par with other countries who have more knowledge of how to play the game) I think another thing that would help would be too model, the football league in the United States, i.e. the MLS, after the great leagues of Europe, with relegation and promotion. but like you said Americans are very prideful so I don’t think we’ll see these changes anytime soon if not ever

I’m an American who lived in London from 1992-1999. I remember when I was a paperboy after Arsene was appointed, the back of the papers (I think it was The Sun) had in big, bold letters: “ARSENE WHO?!” I also remember when Ian Wright said it too after scoring a hat trick against Shieffield Wednesday( or at least I think it was them lol!). Good times.
Steve Cherundolo played his entire career at Hannover here in Germany. He is widely regarded as a club legend, Dolo was adored by the Hannover fans because of his hard work, determination and service to the club, it had nothing to do with the fact that he was American. He also was assistant coach at Stuttgart and the German U15 national team, before leading LAFC to their first MLS title. This Davies attitude of blaming others for difficulties rather than taking responsibility for your own life is frankly pathetic. Not really a good role model for young American players coming through the ranks.
I think this is the case for most players or managers coming from countries who aren’t big names in football. Look at keylor navas for example, they had doubts about him performing in Real Madrid because he was from costa rica, but he turned out to be one of the best goalies in the past decade. What I've gotten from watching things like this and ESPNs coverage of football is that the US is desperate for that break out star and they take it so personally when their main national player (at the min Pulisic) doesn't take the world by storm in the big time and it's somehow our fault they can't be the best at something. Nationality doesn't matter look at Mo Salah how many famous Egyptian players were there before him? It hasn't hindered him in any way because it doesn't matter, fans, media, other players only care about what you do for the club.
Nah, it’s not that. Close though. Pulisic at Chelsea was a disaster towards the end, but Chelsea was a disaster the last few years, with lots of good players underperforming there. Look at his time before a Dortmund and now at Milan. He’s a much better player. Some of that is competition, some of that is scheme and some is just getting regular playing time and being fit. The issue is he was at a place where everyone was under performing. To the point that he comes from a non footballing nation he likely gets the “Americans are not good at football” instead of the benefit of the doubt like other players may get.

He is saying is that there are negative assumptions made, pre-judgements made, if you are an American. Brits hate Americans, so this makes sense. It also makes sense because yes, the US isn't a proper "footballing country". But the fact remains, as an individual, there is a stigma to having come from America and therefore you are almost certainly penalized in the minds of the fans, the media, and even coaches.

To be fair, international players in the NBA were looked down upon for years until the 2000s when Dirk, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol and others proved they could not only hang but be stars and help teams win titles. I agree 100%. I just think it’s honestly more of a social media “joke” where Americans are looked down upon lmao. Respect to Clint. I don't think he was ever 'disrespected' and he is thought of pretty fondly by fans of the clubs he played for over here. However, he's probably correct, he might have had to 'show up' a little more than domestic players, but he doesn't shy away from that - there is a reason for that. Clint is honest about that but isn't using it with the same victim mentality Charlie is. You can't turn up from a place which doesn't really invest in the sport the same way the rest of the world does and expect people to immediately take you at face value, you have to prove yourself. Henry is right on with the NBA comparison. Europeans gained respect over the years in the NBA and now they are proven. Same will go for football if America can keep sending players to Europe and have a handful of successful ones that win trophies. Then things will change.

Ask an Everton fan what they think of Landon Donovan, and even after his short stint there they'll rave about him. Also if you watch his Everton games, like actually watch them not quickly google some goal stats, he was a menace to the opposition. He also proved himself on the international level. Even for a large part of Dempsey's prime (and I really love Dempsey) Donovan was the man most feared in national games. In 2002 he won the young player of the tournament award--which is shared by Michael Owen, Lukas Podolski, Thomas Muller, Paul Pobga, Mbappe, etc. He wasthe most respected American international star. I think Pulisic is overtaking him now as a more skilled player and I have my fingers crossed that some of these other young guys like McKennie and Weah who are starting to catch fire surpass him as well.

He didn't have a great start and the interviewers kept saying he will find it hard because this is the premier league and what not. Its on the internet if you need a refresher. And also when Pep came, the City squad he had was nowhere near any of the squads that came after. City in general was not a big club like it is now and he took it and made it into what it is now which is why they shut up. I think some of these people need to learn what disrespect actually means. As Clint said, respect should be earned and not given, and in any top league you need to earn your own respect. In football only two things can give you this, playing well and winning, whether you are the coach or a player. Not having earned that respect yet is not the same as being constantly disrespected.
A prime example right now is Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League, he came in as a rather unkown quality. Australia is not particularly well known for it's football heritage, much like the USA, but has had some decent players in the prem over the years, much like the USA. Apart from few a couple good seasons with Celtic (a team that despite being good, has a massive advantage over every other team in Scotland just in terms of it's spending power and talent already available when he walked in the door), he did not have that many accolades before joining Spurs. When he first joined he had not earned the respect yet, and as soon as he started showing his worth and the team was performing well then the fans, media and players have all started showing him respect! There is no reason why an American coach couldn't do the same also with good results.

This is the exact example I was gonna bring up for the other side of the argument. Very very comparable presence in the PL compared to Americans. But when Ange came in, nobody even really mentioned him being Australian apart from him saying "mate" a lot. "American" becomes the identity of the coaches and to some extent the players too until proven otherwise. Ange wasn't "Australian" he was just a unproven manager; it wasn't "can an Australian really manage in the PL?"
Ange also doesn't represent the idea of an Australian manager either. If he fails, I highly doubt the next time an Australian manager comes along, you'd hear "well we don't know if they can do it." Bob Bradley effectively set back American coaches just because he didn't work out and every other American manager is like a test case for the rest. Jesse Marsch went to Leeds and he was cast with the same doubts because Bob wasn't a success.
The reality, yes everybody has to prove their worth but that's obvious and beside the point really. It's just as though American managers specifically have other things they're criticized for that others aren't. Not even saying that it's a huge thing to overcome but it's another thing on top of the main thing.
And who knows, maybe they can't do it for one way or another. Be it fair, they're just not good enough, or unfair where they don't garner the same respect to lead the team who knows. But Brazil doesn't have any managers either and they're pretty fine lol. Just an interesting topic imo

The system in the US does not favor the rich. Poor American players play other sports. European systems pay for top youth players. The other less quality players pay to play. Pro soccer is relatively new in America and has only recently gotten to place to be able afford to pay to train Academy players.

you have a good point there are more reasons, but that pay to play system which obviously favors players whose parents have money is frowned upon globally, esp when in other countries theyll play with a stuffed sock or some deflated ball and end up being better than some rich kid. As far as US punditry being disrespected, Americans don't help themselves with programs like Morning Footy and Fox's 2022 World Cup coverage- which are/were embarrassing. The most-watched US football media programs contain mostly British casts- CBS's CL coverage, NBC's PL coverage, and ESPN FC's daily show. This is not by chance.
I think the issue is those first you mentioned are trying to be broad like the others. There are other shows that talk about just the region or the US. Which I like myself. The latter ones you mentioned are great for a broad coverage.

To be fair I think there is a little bit of disrespect towards Americans. Or maybe not disrespect but it's hard to take Americans in football seriously.
Football is the biggest sport in the world, the biggest sport in several countries. And the biggest sport culture in the world and in many countries. And Known globally as football.
But that's not the case in America. You're pretty much the only country in the world who has their own independent sports culture. You have American football, Basketball, baseball and hockey. Which are huge in America but aren't as big elsewhere and I don't think they're truely global, atleast no where near the scale of other sports.
And your league has a structure that is great from a commercial point of view but just doesn't fit in with the nature of football in general it's about promotion and relegation.
So when an American player or manager turns up, talking about football and especially calling it "soccer" giving something the biggest sport on the planet known globally as football its own name. People myself included do roll their eyes. Maybe some people consider it arrogance to rename something and then call it that I'm not sure myself. But I mean if you're a true player or manager or fan you call it by its name, it's actual name, football.
I feel like we definitely don't take American managers and players seriously. But I also think Americans have been a victim of their own sport culture. Football didn't properly catch on there until quite recently.
But I think things are changing and America is for sure making a name for itself. Done of your greatest talent has come all at once and in the last few years. You have a good number of players playing in big European leagues and at top clubs. You're international team is alot better and can compete.
Not sure what it's like in America itself but I definitely feel like football is getting bigger there.

The bottom line is that respect is earned not given, and USA is far more respected nowadays in football than 10 years ago. That’s because the MLS standard is way higher, and you have produced a higher standard of players through your youth academies etc, and there’s some seriously exciting talent coming.
Football is also becoming the biggest sport amongst young Americans, so it’ll likely become your biggest sport years later.
The banter element will probably always be there because of history. But respect will come when Americans achieve something on the world stage, or have a superstar… that helps raise your status.

The problem is in US that right talents are not promoted. Players who represent America are not the best talents. I have been experiencing this lats 3 years for my son. Coaches are too focus on physicality in early ages rather than technical skills, talented soccer IQ high players. Physical players cannot improve their technical skills and game IQ later (these are hard or impossible traits to improve if you do not have until 15 years old). Physicality can be improved easily later. Priorities of coaches do not help America to shine in soccer. If Messi was a boy in America I am sure that he would not selected by coaches U13 competition team. This explains why America does not have soccer stars whereas it dominates in all other sports. I am sorry about this and I am struggling for my 13 years old son last 3 years.

The football culture in the US is not the same as in Argentina, England, Germany, etc. Another thing is the style of Americans in football. in America football tends to be very physical rather than technical, most likely due to the fact of other sports, such as American football, where there’s a huge emphasis on physicality.
The American youth is also just recently getting more into football I think because of people like speed who have increased the popularity of football among the youth.
To end off, I think football is growing in the United States. It’ll take time to get to the level of European football. Regardless, the football mind of the American footballer needs to improve there needs to be more emphasis on the team, how the team connects passes, how to read the game, how to be more creative with the ball (like they do in Brazil) and the teams performance rather than individual physicality and individual performances. (sidenote, you won’t see MLS teams, nor United States national team play like Brazil plays where they anticipate movement where they defend with an idea to switch to offense, with an extra bit of flare. Rather, you’ll see the United States teams hit long balls just clear with no intention of getting anything out of it, Wild errors from defense. You won’t see pulisic like Leo, or Mbappé. It’s just that the American football IQ is just not up to par with other countries who have more knowledge of how to play the game) I think another thing that would help would be too model, the football league in the United States, i.e. the MLS, after the great leagues of Europe, with relegation and promotion. but like you said Americans are very prideful so I don’t think we’ll see these changes anytime soon if not ever

I’m an American who lived in London from 1992-1999. I remember when I was a paperboy after Arsene was appointed, the back of the papers (I think it was The Sun) had in big, bold letters: “ARSENE WHO?!” I also remember when Ian Wright said it too after scoring a hat trick against Shieffield Wednesday( or at least I think it was them lol!). He is widely regarded as a club legend, Dolo was adored by the Hannover fans because of his hard work, determination and service to the club, it had nothing to do with the fact that he was American. He also was assistant coach at Stuttgart and the German U15 national team, before leading LAFC to their first MLS title. This Davies attitude of blaming others for difficulties rather than taking responsibility for your own life is frankly pathetic. Not really a good role model for young American players coming through the ranks.
I think this is the case for most players or managers coming from countries who aren’t big names in football. Look at keylor navas for example, they had doubts about him performing in Real Madrid because he was from costa rica, but he turned out to be one of the best goalies in the past decade. To say only Americans have this issue is just a narrow minded opinion in my opinion

I've played against players from other countries. Some were better than me and some were not. It's the player, not the county.
What I've gotten from watching things like this and ESPNs coverage of football is that the US is desperate for that break out star and they take it so personally when their main national player (at the min Pulisic) doesn't take the world by storm in the big time and it's somehow our fault they can't be the best at something. Nationality doesn't matter look at Mo Salah how many famous Egyptian players were there before him? It hasn't hindered him in any way because it doesn't matter, fans, media, other players only care about what you do for the club.
Nah, it’s not that. Close though. Pulisic at Chelsea was a disaster towards the end, but Chelsea was a disaster the last few years, with lots of good players underperforming there. Look at his time before a Dortmund and now at Milan. He’s a much better player. Some of that is competition, some of that is scheme and some is just getting regular playing time and being fit.
The issue is he was at a place where everyone was under performing. To the point that he comes from a non footballing nation he likely gets the “Americans are not good at football” instead of the benefit of the doubt like other players may get.

I think it's true that 2 equally skilled players, if one of them was American, they'd probably be the one on the bench. I don't think it's even English, if the US was against a Frenchman or a German player, they'd still be left out.
I think it's from the old mindset of football heritage, i.e the German, English or Frenchman has most probably played football all his life since he could walk, so that in the managers eyes will give them a very slight edge, or simply due to experiencing football in stronger leagues, would give you a more experienced approach to the game as opposed to someone with a wealth of MLS experience.
If the MLS was a good league (spoiler, it will never achieve this until the structure is changed) players coming from the MLS would be given more of a fair shake,

Beasley, Dempsey and Landon Donovan both grew up with footballs at their feet and playing street football 7 days a week before during and after school.
Thats why in a nation of 300 million and the most registered youth players. They were the three best of their generation.
