So far, you have been the only one that really goes into depth concerning each plant. So helpful for beginning gardeners and advent gardeners to become successful. I have a border of Franklin's gem boxwood that I need to add one more but they are hard to find, can you suggest another one that might work in its place? What type of boxwood is a Franklin's Gem? Also, can one tell by the leaves which type they are, Japanese, English or American?
I just planted some boxwoods. They told me the first couple of weeks keep them moist. So I should only water them after they dry out after that? Maybe once a week? I interested in any help
Thanks for the video. I follow Linda Vater and she always talks about Baby Gems and I was trying to see what the difference is btwn the two. I subscribed and am looking forward to your other videos. I am a boxwood lover and have had only suffruticosas for years, but I have my first case of box blight. I have learned a lot and realize that I have been buying the most susceptible all this time! Wish me luck.
I purchased two in the spring and never got them placed in the ground. I'm around zone 5 and they are in plastic tubs. I wonder if they will survive our cold in Canada.
So our winter gem boxwood came with a tag that said make a water basin. I also put red mulch on top of it and had trouble with the clay it came with trying to expose the roots. I thought they would be long but you said they are not. Which makes sense. I'm not sure if I should dig it up and break the clay lose or leave it. This is my first plant ever. Thanks
Hi Jim! I got some Sprinter boxwoods for a hedge and need to fill in some empty spaces. Alas! Sprinter boxwood is trademarked and expensive $$$$. Do you think I can get away with Winter Gem as a Sprinter decoy in my hedge?
I live in northern Illinois. Last winter the sun/cold combination was just right to burn out many of the branches on my winter green box woods. Is there anything I can do to regenerate quickly green growth on the now straw color branches.
Great video. Was hoping you'd shed some light on my confusion with planting shrubs. I bought Boj Winter Gem boxwoods today, tag says mature size is 3-4' H x 3-4' W, spacing 3-4'. I get confused on figuring out the distance in between the 3 I bought. I ended up spacing them 28" apart, not sure how that will look will mature. My mind tells me that when the mature width is reached, that you allow for say 3-4', meaning 1.5-2' on "each" side =3-4'. Hope that makes sense. Love for your opinion about this. Thanks again, loved the video, just need specific info on spacing...
Jim, Thank you for your very well detailed gardening / landscaping videos! I’ve always appreciated them and can’t wait to see how your yard turns out. I reside in a zone 7B (New York) and I’m looking to plant Baby Gem and or Winter Gem Boxwoods in the yard. What’s your take on them in comparison to Sprinter Boxwoods? Thanks!
Does anyone know if these, or any type of boxwood is especially resistent to boxwood blight? I want a evergreen hedge that would require about 12 of them and I'm scared to invest. I'd do Holly, Arborvitae, or Yew, but I know from EXPERIENCE what the deer do to those. Thanx in advance! 😃
I love love boxwood, but I am in zone 3 and we always have a harsh and long winter. .. My question is can I grow boxwood in my area cause it seems like every time I have one it died.. please help..or need some advice.. appreciate it..Thank you
THANKS FOR GOING INTO SO MUCH DEPTH. I AM AN OLDER LADY THAT MAY NOT BE SO AGILE ANYMORE BUT WITH YOUR EASY TO UNDERSTAND INSTRUCTIONS AND TIPS, WELL I 'CAN DO THIS'. HAVE A POSSIBLE EASEMENT IN THE MAKING FROM A NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR WHO IS STARTING TO USE PART OF MY DRIVEWAY TO HIS HOUSE AND THERE IS NO DIVIDER IN BETWEEN. AFTER 5 YEARS OF DOING THAT., HE CAN DOCUMENT AN EASEMENT OF MY PROPERTY. NO NO NO WAY. HE MAY NOT REALIZE IT NOW, BUT WHEN THESE BOXWOODS GET BIGGER LIKE 5 FEET LOL, HE WILL REALIZE WHY I HAD TO DO IT. THANKS JIM FOR YOUR SUPER DUPER VIDEO. MAKE MORE PLEASE. I ALSO BOUGHT 4 ITALIAN CYPRESS FOR MY YARD TO BLOCK OUT THIS NEIGHBORS EXTENDED YARD FORM VIEW IN A SPOT OPEN TO SEE HIS FROM MINE. HE HAS LOADS OF PINE TREES MAYBE THE CYPRESS,S WILL KEEP THE PINE NEEDLES ON HIS SIDE.......
We just bought new boxwoods this weekend (globe mountain green boxwoods 6.9 gal). We planned to get them in the ground this week but the temperature will drop on Wednesday in Raleigh. Is it ok to go ahead and plant them and if so, do we need to cover to protect from frost? I've read a lot of conflicting information on how big these get and if they truly stay green or turn a bronze color. Are these ok to use as foundation shrubs? Thanks for your time- your videos have been really helpful!
Boxwoods like a more neutral pH than most broadleaf evergreen shrubs so some people dont recommend using holly tone for that reason. Plant tone is fine. The sulfur probably isn't changing the pH very much anyway.
@@JimPutnam thank you for clearing up whether to use holly tone or plant tone. I'm getting ready to plant two large Green Velvet boxwoods and I needed to know what to add to back fill dirt besides pine soil conditioner. Your above comment helped inform me.
Jim. I am choosing boxwood for decorative edge, plant on prune them to cubes I hate the kind with loose branches but like the dense kind and stay green in winter, I heard Sprinter boxwood is great for that. What do you think? I bought some Newport Blue Boxwood. They are okay. What else you recommend?
Question: are the green gem boxwood different care then winter gem? I’m planting my first couple of boxwood and needed to do things right. Oh and I’m putting some in containers here in 7b. What are the best pots to plant these in? Thank you I know I’m wordy. Lol
In Nevada cold is really not the issue.Burning heat in July or August is the problem. Ragged desert shrubs are not as attractive as things like camelias gardenias, azaleas ect.
Hi Jim. My winter gem boxweed is beautiful but it has grown to 4 feet and I would like to cut it back to 3 feet. Is there any problem with cutting it back to 3 feet and is there anything I need to be aware of? Thank you.
Just found your super informative video, Thank you. I have a question which box wood is a fast grower to put between my neighbor and myself ..? Thank you again.
i have evergreen superfuitose boxwoods dwarf what would i fertilize with i guess there english boxwoods i have them as a hedge around my driveway also what causes branches to go brown like there dead
Hi Jim, This video very thorough and helpful. I am in South Carolina zone 8, clay soil. I am creating a new hedge which I eventually will train to low shape approx 2' tall and 3' wide at base. The 26 Winter Gems were planted February 2017, healthy 3 gallon plants, but on the upright side as opposed to being wide mushroom-ish. Planted fairly close together, approx 20" on center, and the existing branches were not quite touching. They seem to have established well, not so very much growth on top, but I'm assuming growth below! QUESTIONS re pruning. First, to encourage wide and low growth, in what manner shall I prune? Would bringing height down to interior of plant, loosely overall, force out growth to the side? Second, timing? Shall I prune now (just before growth starts), after flush of spring growth, or give them a year to grow more before I start shaping? Now I'll go check out other videos of yours!
+Amy Henderson Yes it is time to prune them before the new growth. Just even them up and then you can do it a few more times this year after flushes of growth.
Jim .. I wish I would have watched this video last year. I planted them in the full sun (zone 9b) and they are slow growing. Help me . . . is there something that I could mix with them? Something that would look similar but be faster growing? Thx. My nursery is Willow Tree and they are pretty extensive.
Boxwood beauty is my favorite! Little white flowers similar to jasmine and greenish white almond shaped berries that turn red...my favorite! I just wish I New how to grow them successfully in Phoenix.
Jim is the best planting teacher out there

GREAT video!!!
Is it a good idea to plant a winter gem boxwood in a pot?
Question: Did he say boxwood love acid fertilizer at 6.50? Thought boxwood would do well with regular/all purpose fertz?
Do these boxwoods smell?
Very nice and informative video. I have a question which box wood can grow in very hardy zone 3 canada
How well does the winter gem boxwood grow with river pebble rock instead of mulch?
Really helpful video
Can anyone tell me if this variation can be brought inside for the winter, or does it need dormancy? If it can go to zone 9, I would assume so, right?
In a Heated House it will get Spider Mites
Great video very helpful! You said to use holly tone with the boxwood but I’ve also read not to use it. Would someone be able to elaborate on this?

Un Real I agree, I’ve also been told not to use Hollytone but Plantone instead.

I really like my Baby Gem and Green Mountain.
Hi,i have customera that want me to do a landscaping job,but they want a low maintenance plant,, what plants or bushes would you recomend.. thanks.
Can I leave them in the planter ? I have a low patio wall and I bought a couple to give me a little more privacy.

Does the Winter Gem have an unpleasant smell?

Does anyone know: Is winter gem the same as green gem boxwoods ? Thanks!

Watch the video, where he explains this.
Awesome video! Very informative! Great channel here Jim! 👌🏽
My yard is invaded by deer. Got any suggestions on what to plant that they will not eat.
I don't know what area of the country you live in so that is hard to say. Boxwoods are a very choice for most people.
Thank you Jim for your response. I live in Georgia. I actually tried to transplant some boxwood, however, they are not doing very well.
Excuse me I tried transplanting Holly
Just found your super informative video, Thank you. I have a question which box wood is a fast grower to put between my neighbor and myself ..? Thank you again.
These would be a good choice. Any Japanese or Korean boxwood
@@JimPutnam Thanks so much. I was actually thinking of the privets but I love box woods.
Hi Jim, can these be planted as a hedge row? If so, how close would you plant them together initially?
+Chad Papineau They are frequently used that way. You could put them as close as 2 feet if you could water in the future.. Probably 3 feet is better.
HortTube with Jim Putnam O have just planted boxwoods for a hedge. Any more tips? I am in the Panhandle of Texas
Great information thanks so much! Just discovered your channel and I love it ! 😍
Thank you.
Hi, what would cause yellowing of the leaves and poor growth? We have a hedge and some plants are having those troubles but others not. Thankyou
Yellowing of the new growth could be to much water or some sort of nutrient issue related to soil pH.
Oh no this isn’t the new growth, it will be the entire plant all of a sudden will yellow and become sparse
i have evergreen superfuitose boxwoods dwarf what would i fertilize with i guess there english boxwoods i have them as a hedge around my driveway also what causes branches to go brown like there dead
I would just use an organic fertilizer like plant tone. That would work great. Some people will use cottonseed meal on boxwoods
What size pot is the boxwood you are holding in this video in?
3 gallon.

Thanks Jim. Will get out there next sunny day. Is there any particular pruning strategy to promote WIDE growth?
This is great do you recommend any fast growing hedge plants for south Texas?
Texas Sage or Cenizo . They are an ashy green and give small purple flowers. They are great in the Valley.
How far apart would you plant these to make a hedge? I’ve seen conflicting information.
I would say three feet. You could go a little closer if you were impatient. A little further if you don't care how long it takes
Thanks Jim! This video was very helpful. And even at 3’ they will (eventually) form into a compacted hedge?
Do winter gems do ok in full sun on a southern exposure in zone 6b?
I'm in zone 6B. Mine do well with that exposure.
Thank you
How to buy this seeds. I'm from Malaysia
Very helpful
I just transplanted my boxwoods. Now the top baby leaves are wilting. Help!
Just prune them back a little so they aren't trying to grow and reroot at the same time
Thank you. Will try that and update!
Thank you for making this video.0
I was looking for a boxwood that could be grown for it's branches at Christmas (boxwood trees). I live in central new york.
+Paula Thompson This one would work, but English boxwood is more typical for that application
@PaulaThompson : Green Mountain. Green Tower.
Oh no, I planted mine level with the ground and not above, will this be a problem?? 😭

are they acid lovers
Boxwoods are super adaptable to pH. Not very picky in that regard
Are these prickly?
No
Not an acid loving plant
