Avoiding The Path to Sin | Nouman Ali Khan (Urdu Q&A 6 - Pakistan)

  • A common thought amongst those who live in Muslims countries is that if they were to move to a non-Muslim country, e.g. for work or studies, that they'd be more exposed to temptations and therefore fall into sins. As minorities, it'd be too hard to preserve one's practice of the deen.
Is this the case? Should that option be avoided? A student asks this very question to Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan during a Q&A session at the Akhri Moujza (Divine Speech Urdu) event in Pakistan.

I completely disagree with this notion. There are plenty of things that are good in predominantly countries that you can’t find in non muslim countries. Just the adhan, availability of halal, number of mosques available, and the comfort for muslim women to walk proudly in their hijab. Lying and bribery are everywhere, maybe bribery is more common in the east but the current conditions of western societies are much much worse than 10-15 years ago, with the rise of the far left and support for a variety of unislamic issues. So no it’s not the same. I completely support Muslims to live in the west as long as they can practice their deen proudly, benefit from education and work, especially if you’re born and raised in the western country but for someone to move as the girl is saying, only out of necessity and you should weigh the pros and cons.

I live in America and have thought of moving to a Muslim country. But with that being said, I know you get rewarded on your effort so if it's easy to practice Islam in a Muslim country, wouldn't you have to do much more good deeds to equal being a "normal" Muslim in America? Also, being born in America I sometimes think maybe I'm part of Allahs' plan to spread Islam to the west. I mean other Muslims converted me so shouldn't I be here to help convert others? I think we sometimes just want life to be easy but then we wouldn't be being tested now would we? Sometimes I get angry at all the evil around me but I also get to see the effect it has on people and why it's so good to be Muslim in the first place. I don't know. Food for thought.

There is a big difference between kafir country and muslim country, kafir countries have laws against islamic practices, this is the reason why scholars like assim al Hakim have said moving to a kafir country where you cannot freely practice your deen is prohibited.

one thing we forget that..call it "muslim country" or "kafir country'' , now capitalism system is the main power in the world where Allah has said every single thing has to be done followed by sharia..we're too busy in following islam just in some cases of our life, but the most important thing khilafa is absent. None of worried about this..without we can't follow 100% Islam anywhere in the world.

It is clearly mentioned in surah an nisaa ayat 97 to 100 that those who immigrate to non Muslim countries have angels questioning them at death that why they chose to stay or immigrate to a disbelieving nation and when they reply they were oppressed the angels will say it’s a lie and earth was spacious enough to settle anywhere else. ( since most immigratie for worldly reasons)
Pls refer to explanation in ibn katheer.
The prophets were sent to a minority but Allah made the last prophet pbuh change the minority into a majority Muslim nation. If minority was sufficient then there was no need to challenge and give ultimatums to mushriks( ref surah taubah ayat 1 to 5) to either embrace Islam or leave the place.
The fitna is there in Muslim nations too but the fitna is not of kufr or practice Islam at least. And sorry mosques arent empty everywhere. Ppl pray on roads and in malls.. practice hijab without the interference of government in Muslim nations.
One must live in a Muslim nation to know the difference and wisdom of enjoying freedom
To practice deen even if our worldly life is constrained.

    A vague reply ,
It’s obviously better for a believer to be at a place which has a religious code of conduct predominantly , or Muslims (even if by name ) are in majority , the call of Allah (azaan) is being heard, even if there’s wrongdoing it’s hidden and not celebrated. The difference is sky and earth. Why to put ourselves at test voluntarily. It feels like a justification for those who aren’t bothered by modernity

Well said, but I understand whom She was referring to Dr. Zakir Naik. Recently Dr. Naik posted a video on this topic and gave details about why a Muslim shouldn’t migrate to a non-muslim country. Nouman Ali Khan's explanation is okay. But to support your idea you should give Islamic reference. Dr. Naik gave point-to-point references to that talk, even though he broke down your explanations. So, just because you grew up in the USA and of course, you need a positive face to the government and also the educated Muslim people want to hear this type of explanation, please don’t lose your deen. That's a serious issue. Most probably, you are not taking it seriously. It is directly connected to your deen. You are deviating a huge number of people. I request you discuss this topic with mainstream scholars rather than Western scholars

Ustad, you are right in one respect, But I think calling non Muslim and Muslim societies equal/similar is still wrong because collective culture in Muslim societies are still better ( though degeneration is happening and that's what we have to fight against) there are less hurdles and more opportunities in Muslim societies if you are on the right path . I think we need to tell the people that truth instead of keeping them in a mindset that West's degeneration won't harm them in a long term. West has gone into totally different path there's why some scholars are taking this stand now that it's almost must to leave.
I hope we all individually try to analyze the situations as well. May Allah help us all . Ameen

With all due respect, I strongly disagree with Usdat Noman on this matter. It's not that simple but rather needs a deep understanding sociopolitical spectrum of the current world order. Let me break it down into pieces to dismantle the Logical Fallacy (of him assuming that it's equally difficult for someone to practice its deen in a Muslim majority country & a non-muslim country) of Ustad.
1- Individual freedoms (that include religious freedom as well) are in continuous decline in the western world, for example, the majority of Western countries have banned homeschooling, which means that your children will be taught whatever these liberal secular governments deem appropriate to teach them.
2- Woke culture, its lifestyle and ideology are being pushed by the state which can be observed in the form of exposing children to LGBTQ content in the schools, the WhiteHouse turning into a Rainbow and many more.
Conclusion: I agree with him on the point that one will find haram stuff (gambling, bribery etc) everywhere in the world but my point is that there is a great difference between some people's haram acts and the state pushing the quam lot agenda onto my child. I agree that in 1st case there are chances of our kids getting influenced by the individual haram acts but the probability of our kids being brainwashed by the liberal secular education system in the Western countries is sure (something that has a probability of 1).

There is no Qaum e Lūt agenda. The very notion of such an agenda is an old homophobic trope. Muslims don’t like it when Islamophobic tropes are directed at them. Don’t dish it if you can’t take it

@@heartfeltteaching it's the least that I can expect from somebody, "𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺". Instead of addressing the points that I have raised you started labelling me with these identity based nouns. The crux of my entire post is that it's better for the Muslims to stay in their indigenous Muslim-majority homelands as compare to migrating into western states. The reason I gave for this is that because the liberal and secular governments of the west are imposing their definitions(DEEN) onto others (Of which some of the sources I have mentioned in my earlier comment). And you labeled me as a homophobe, how dare you?

@@mustafamarvat863 Bruv what are you on about? I never labeled you anything in the four sentences I wrote. There is no ad hominem attack at all. I was focusing on the homophobic aspect of all the moral panic in your comment. LGBT people anywhere are not trying to turn children gay or tell them to switch genders. Also, there is no such thing as the West just as there is no such thing as the East.

*Our Prophet (ﷺ) had tears in his eyes when listening this verse of Qur'an*
    Narrated `Abdullah (bin Mas`ud):
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said (to me), "Recite the Qur'an to me." I said, "Shall I recite (it) to you while it has been revealed to you?"
He said, "I like to hear it from another person." So I recited Surat An-Nisa (The Women) till I reached the Verse:
    فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةٍۭ بِشَهِيدٍۢ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَىٰ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ شَهِيدًۭا
"How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people.'"
    Qur'an (4.41)
Then he said to me, "Stop!" Thereupon I saw his eyes overflowing with tears.

He appears to dismiss the entire concept of Islamic Hijrah here. There are significant differences between life in a Muslim country and a non-Muslim country, with some arguing that life in a Muslim country is much better. He is suggesting that in America, there is gambling, zina, and alcohol, while in a Muslim country, there is lying, bribing, and so on. Thus, he implies that both are somewhat similar or using his example apparently, America is better as it seems to have no lies or bribes. The question raised is whether someone would be better off living in a society where open vices like zina, alcohol, and gambling are prevalent or in one where some people secretly commit sins like lies and bribes. Consider where you want your children to be, in a society with both open and secret sins or in one with only secret or fewer open sins. SubhanAllah.
