Dogs cannot steal. If something is dis guarded then they will believe that it is unwanted

Hi Jan, our family have always adopted your amichien bonding which has helped us so much in life. My mum’s latest golden doodle Jemima has developed a habit of stealing anything she can find in the house. When we see her trying to steal something from the sideboard or table, we tell her not to and she gets down but as soon as we are in another room, or away from her, she is always on the hunt for anything, not just food. She has chewed up glasses, ripped up documents and even stolen a knife. It’s getting dangerous and we are becoming neurotic trying to not leave anything she could possibly get. She gets lots of walks (at least 2 hours a day), regular play sessions and stimulation. We don’t understand why she is so insistent, other than she thinks it’s fun and what she finds is hers. She is a 3 year old medium sized golden doodle called Jemima. We’ve always had dogs but none who have developed this thieving habit. Any advice you have would be hugely appreciated. Thanks for all you do, Caroline

This usually happens when the dog takes on the role of leader and in its confusion and stress behaviours like this are common. I suggest that you go back to the beginning and work the process, as taking away the pressure will help relax the dog. This is because the more 'telling or making the dog' can only increase the stress for all.
