It really is the same. I was lucky to get to experience it and this man is on another level. He drove around big Willow so smooth but very quickly (easily going over 80 for most of the track) and talked with me like it was a Sunday drive.
The "turbine" car which Randy was talking about is the Howmet TX. It has a helicopter engine, and the highest revving engine ever fitted to a car, at a mind-bending 52,500 rpm! Anyway, such a good video, and big fan Randy!
The wiki says 57,000 rpm... That's like adding another kia to your number lol. Holy crap, thanks for the info, I'm going down a rabbit hole about this car. I knew someone who worked at Howmet and recognized the name. I would have never known about this car without your comment.
Max was 16 on his first Free Practice outing. And indeed about 10 or 11 years in karts before F3 that same season. He cought inevitable spins in that first car.
Randy, I don't have a Bugatti but if I did I wouldn't think twice about you driving it. And I honestly think people wouldn't mind at all. You're Professional driver, and very likeable. We need to know if our cars are loose
In very basic terms a jet is just a fire in a tube, and because it's in a tube, the force of the exhaust pushes out one end (and pulls air in the other), thus providing thrust. A gas turbine, is a fire inside half a Turbo, but instead of (or in addition to) using it to turn a compressor stage, it can be used to turn an output shaft to just about anything you want to spin, like a wheel, or a rotor blade, or a ducted fan. Now if you power a fan on the front, AND stick a fiery-tube/jet on the back, you have a turbo-fan with afterburner. The problem with them, is the don't rev up & down very quickly, so you get very poor throttle response for land vehicle applications.
Wow I know Mr Barry Silbert. I met him at a conference in carlifornia 2019 where he introduced us his business strategy, he helped me cover my student loans

Gee... Why would a press car with dozens of sloppy, negligent journalists driving it be 'looser' than a polished, perfectly-tuned, pristine, 500-miles-a-year million dollar customer car?
a "Randy tracks cars" YT channel gets my sub faster than a P1 goes to 100kmh. I mean, Randy doing laps in a Viper and telling us how it feels, delightful! An rx7 would be awesome. An xmas special with 10 different 911s from different eras. Like Doug DeMuro, but instead of quirks and features we get handles and feels.
Insert here the mandatory snippy comment about Sting not riding a worm in the 1984 travesty that was Dune. "Dude... he wasn't even a Fremen. You don't blah blah blah." Pobst has the best stories; glad to see him back on the channel.
All jet engines are turbines. However, the ones that are in race cars aren't direct thrust cars. Those are typically ONLY LSR vehicles, as the thrust required causes SEVERE damage to the track and nearby vehicles. The turbines (jets, really the same thing in the end) in race cars are turbo-prop style engines. As was found in Donald Campbell's LSR car with the 30" or larger wheels that he wrecked at Bonneville. And the one that you have pictured at about 2:20 in the video. If you need more explanation, I can add it. However, this should give you plenty to look up if are interested enough to google it.
I'd happily let Randy drive any one of my multiple Bugatti hypercars. I have every one if them that's in every Forza since motorsport 4. Just hit me up on xbox and we'll figure something out.
I gotta pit@@AeroGuy07! I don't think so, we're kind of busy right now, eating ice cream. Now you're welcome to come on and get one, but I don't think Nascar would take too kindly to you eating ice cream out there on the track. You're having enough trouble keeping it on the track as it is! Harry Hogge - 1990
Oddly, I've found every McLaren I've pushed hard tends to UNDERSTEER, and everyone agrees they'd prefer less of that. To combat that, getting away from Pirelli's helps, 15mm spacers helps a little, and wider tires clears up the rest. I haven't driven a Senna hard yet, so maybe I'll find otherwise with it when I'm able to.
600LT on Trofeo R’s is the best handling production vehicle I’ve driven on track right out of the box. Much, much less understeer than the 570S I had driven previously but yes, overall Mclaren’s do have some understeer mainly due to their relatively front narrow tires that are chose due to the better feedback they provide
Jet engines are "generally" the same idea. More a matter of afterburner. They don't make a ton of thrust without one, hook that to a gearbox and you have power at the wheels. Put an afterburner on one and you have big thrust numbers and no need for power to the wheels. I'm not an "expert" but that's how I've been taught the difference. Additional info is appreciated!
Re: turbines vs jets - they are more or less the same thing. A jet engine generates thrust by blasting combustion gasses directly out the back. A turbine spins something by blasting those gasses across an impeller/fan. It's not a huge difference mechanically, but what they're doing with the power is slightly different.
The difference between a turbine jet engine that would be in an aircraft and the turboshaft engine that would be in the car is the turbojet engine uses thrust coming out of the exhaust to propel the aircraft forward. The turbo shaft uses the turbine engine to turn a shaft that would be connected to a gearbox to drive the wheels.
Oops missed the EST start time for the interview by an hour. Time is so valuable and I feel horrible to waste their time. When one door shuts another opens and I will be working with a local dealer 3 miles from home!
I may or may not have seen the difference from a manufacturer supplied car to press and a car off of the lot. As a factory trained mechanic, it was easy to see.
Late to the party, but for Randy, difference between turbine power and Jet power... A Jet uses a turbine to expel high pressure/velocity air/water out a nozzle to create thrust. IE, the pressure you feel pushing back on you. The turbine part of the jet is actually a set of turbine fans on the front that compress the air to back. A turbo-jet vs turbo-prop is a turboprop uses a normal propeller thrust vs this air thrust. A turbine car? Well imagine a transmission where that propeller is. The turbine part? Well, that is behind these fan/trans/prop, where you have a compressor fan to ignites the fuel into the turbine fan... imagine a turbocharger where compressor impeller put air directly to the exhaust turbine blade and a fuel injector in between. It is why turbines got that cool start up sound. They need to get spinning to get that air compression. Only then can they give the fuel, else back surges.
I'm surprised Randy at the time hadn't driven any Bugatti yet Jason had enough experience with the original Veyron to know how much of a step change the SuperSport was at launch.
