No, we haven´t. Society has progressed a lot throughout the last 70 years and we´re MUCH better off today than we were decades ago. And the 50´s were just shitty, especially in regard to women-rights, workers-rights, medical insurance, overall quality of life, progress in all sorts of sciences. Politics has lost its decency in public nowadays, as it appears to us, but believe me, behind closed doors, all well-educated and seemingly friendly politicians in the 50´s were even more brutal and ruthless than today. In conclusion, were the 50´s better? Yes and No. Better than in the years before the 50´s, but certainly not better than today. That would just be self-deception. It just LOOKED fancier, but behind the curtain there was a lot of misery for the avarage people. The struggle for daily income was much more severe than it is the case today.

I am always struck by how color was such a large part of our architecture and modern features in our everyday lives. And, how clean the cities were kept. No trash is seen on the street in any city across the country.

I agree. I don't know if you physically go to an office, but I have had two on-site jobs in the US, and the office spaces couldn't be more depressing. White walls and glass everywhere, not a wiff of color and aesthetics, neither on the inside nor on the outside. Employees used to decorate their walls with family photos, but being from a different culture, I hesitated in doing that. And, of course, you couldn't hang a painting in a small cubicle!

Cresent Junction Utah. I traveled with my dad all the time in the summer. He worked for Hughes Tool Co. Selling rock bits to drilling rigs. We lived in Grand Jct Co and would stop at Cresent Jct. for fuel and lunch or just a nice piece of apple pie. What a wonderful memory. Im 67 now.
I feel blessed for being born in in 1951. The perfect age for the next three decades. A kid in the 50's, teen in the 60's and a young adult in the 70's.
One thing I can say for certain is that, people back in those days dressed very nicely when they're out in streets. I cannot say the same about today, 2023!
It's not necessarily a good thing. If you want to dress fancy when you go out today, you still can. But back then social convention would simply prohibit you from dressing casually outside without being judged. Imagine the constant pressure of maintaining 'appearances' in your neighbourhood? Great video. I will watch more from this channel. The early 50s through early '60s marked the peak of American (and likely World) civilization. People dressed respectively, were respectful to others, hard working, honest and God fearing. Those that worked hard had what they needed and then some more left over for fun. And make no mistake, younger adults in the '50s had a lot of fun. I would have loved to have lived in those days. Thanks to the presenter for giving me a glimpse of it.

The 1950s were the best era in US history: - rapid development - then the highways crossing the USA and most of the single-family housing estates were built - low unemployment - cheap fuel - everyone could afford a house and a car - there was a demographic boom - great youth - beautiful, natural women - traditional, Christian and patriotic values prevailed - there was a low crime rate - in the suburbs and in the province no one locked houses and cars - rock and roll reigned supreme! 😉

For all us 1950s boomers, it was a terrific time to be a kid. Everything in the US was expanding - new schools, new roads, new manufacturing, new styles for cars, houses, clothing. Just everything was improving. There was a lot of optimistism. Parents knew their kids would do better than they did. No, it wasn't perfect especially for minorities. But things were changing for the better. I was taught respect for adults - all adults! Whether it was a teacher or a neighbor, or someone in a lower station in life. I said yes ma'am and yes sir to every one of them. Or suffer a thump on the head from Daddy!
I’m black, and my grandparents raised me. I remember they always used to tell me about how good the 50s-60s were even in Texas. This was back in the 90s early 2000s. I don’t know how they would react to how the world is now in 2024.

This upload of American during the golden-50's made excellent viewing. While I live in another part of the world, I would give just about anything to have been a part of the 50's era in America. The gas stations, diners, shopping arcades, the churches - everything looked so clean, so lively and so inviting. My heart skipped a beat when you gave us a view of the book and paper stands that sold stuff in 1953, the year my top fave, Lisa Gaye signed with Universal International. How I would love to get my hands on those books and papers of that particular year. What also caught my eagle eye were shots of young boys [delinquents] smoking on the street and gambling on the side-walks. They couldn't have been more than 14 years of age. Livening up the eye were very shapely girls in short-shorts [reminded me of Debra Paget & Lisa Gaye on bicycles] and those in two-piece swimsuits. One of the diner shots featured a very young Sal Mineo, who must have been looking for a movie-break discovery. There was also a brief shot of a street-busker. All in all, a wonderful stroll down memory lane with one wish "Time should have stood still"
What a wonderful era. It must have been great having lived then, perhaps especially as a teenager. I get wistful seeing those photos or films although I was born several years later. Thank you for your channel which I found accidentally but subscribed.
Seeing stuff from the 50s makes me realize why I love my city so much -- it's because most of it still looks like it's from the 50s. Some of the old buildings from then have been rebuilt and modernized, but most of the original buildings & signs with that wonderful 40s/50s aesthetic remain, and it looks exactly like the photos shared in this video. ♥
San Francisco hasn't changed all that much. A few taller building now, but a lot of the old neighborhoods still look the same. Violent crime is much lower today, too.
If you were White. I miss some things (my youth, for one) but not the ubiquitous tobacco smoke, girdles, nylon stockings and comfortable lounges in the student union reserved for males. It was a less crowded country, though. About half the population

In those days of the nuclear family, we grew up with values and traditions reinforced by family(ies), neighbors, community, Boy/Girl Scouts/4-H youth groups, Church(es), schools, ... all the way up to the Media outlets (TV, magazines, radio, Wolfman Jack, Dick Clark, Alan Freed, ...) which were reinforcing traditional American family values. Despite having our own "hormone storms" as teenagers, most of us did respect girls and young women. I studied in NYC in the late sixties - that is the way it was. husband speaking age 81.10 - WOW such good memories - I remember 10 cents shows on Sat. afternoon, Black and White movies, the News Real, a Bug Bunny cartoon. Full service gas stations ( with my folks ) I started driving at age 17, and I think gas was 30 cents a gallon. Playing outside with the neighbor kids, no TV cell phones or computers to mar the fun. The kids today I bet can't imagine living like we did and our older folks would love for our grandkids to enjoy our way of fun.

Cresent Junction Utah. I traveled with my dad all the time in the summer. He worked for Hughes Tool Co. Selling rock bits to drilling rigs. We lived in Grand Jct Co and would stop at Cresent Jct. for fuel and lunch or just a nice piece of apple pie. What a wonderful memory. Im 67 now.

I feel blessed for being born in in 1951. The perfect age for the next three decades. A kid in the 50's, teen in the 60's and a young adult in the 70's.

One thing I can say for certain is that, people back in those days dressed very nicely when they're out in streets. I cannot say the same about today, 2023!

It's not necessarily a good thing. If you want to dress fancy when you go out today, you still can.
But back then social convention would simply prohibit you from dressing casually outside without being judged. Imagine the constant pressure of maintaining 'appearances' in your neighbourhood? Doesn't sound fun to me.

Great video. I will watch more from this channel. The early 50s through early '60s marked the peak of American (and likely World) civilization. People dressed respectively, were respectful to others, hard working, honest and God fearing. Those that worked hard had what they needed and then some more left over for fun. And make no mistake, younger adults in the '50s had a lot of fun. I would have loved to have lived in those days. Thanks to the presenter for giving me a glimpse of it.

- rapid development - then the highways crossing the USA and most of the single-family housing estates were built
- low unemployment
- cheap fuel
- everyone could afford a house and a car
- there was a demographic boom
- great youth
- beautiful, natural women
- traditional, Christian and patriotic values prevailed
- there was a low crime rate - in the suburbs and in the province no one locked houses and cars
- rock and roll reigned supreme! 😉

Wish it was still like this today. Beautiful and the people were stylish and more. Happier days. Sad to see what happened to our country since. They would be so shocked and upset with what happened to us too. You can see it with most of the people over 75 today who remember those days. They say a few things are better today but most of it today it not as nice as then. I grew up in the 70s 80s early 90s. I see changes too. I was hoping it would get better than the 80s and 90s but it got worse especially in our cities.

For all us 1950s boomers, it was a terrific time to be a kid. Everything in the US was expanding - new schools, new roads, new manufacturing, new styles for cars, houses, clothing. Just everything was improving. There was a lot of optimistism. Parents knew their kids would do better than they did. No, it wasn't perfect especially for minorities. But things were changing for the better. I was taught respect for adults - all adults! Whether it was a teacher or a neighbor, or someone in a lower station in life. I said yes ma'am and yes sir to every one of them. Or suffer a thump on the head from Daddy!
I’m black, and my grandparents raised me. I remember they always used to tell me about how good the 50s-60s were even in Texas. This was back in the 90s early 2000s. I don’t know how they would react to how the world is now in 2024.
@Stangy04 Things were changing for minorities in the 60s and 70s - for a better and more just world. And for women and gay people too. It was a time of forward progress, not like today when the GOP is actually moving us backward! I love reminiscing about the past, but obviously, it was not perfect.

And car companies that resisted all safety measures because they might reduce the glamor that encouraged buying.

This upload of American during the golden-50's made excellent viewing. While I live in another part of the world, I would give just about anything to have been a part of the 50's era in America. The gas stations, diners, shopping arcades, the churches - everything looked so clean, so lively and so inviting. My heart skipped a beat when you gave us a view of the book and paper stands that sold stuff in 1953, the year my top fave, Lisa Gaye signed with Universal International. How I would love to get my hands on those books and papers of that particular year. What also caught my eagle eye were shots of young boys [delinquents] smoking on the street and gambling on the side-walks. They couldn't have been more than 14 years of age. Livening up the eye were very shapely girls in short-shorts [reminded me of Debra Paget & Lisa Gaye on bicycles] and those in two-piece swimsuits. One of the diner shots featured a very young Sal Mineo, who must have been looking for a movie-break discovery. There was also a brief shot of a street-busker. All in all, a wonderful stroll down memory lane with one wish "Time should have stood still"
What a wonderful era. It must have been great having lived then, perhaps especially as a teenager. I get wistful seeing those photos or films although I was born several years later.

Seeing stuff from the 50s makes me realize why I love my city so much -- it's because most of it still looks like it's from the 50s. Some of the old buildings from then have been rebuilt and modernized, but most of the original buildings & signs with that wonderful 40s/50s aesthetic remain, and it looks exactly like the photos shared in this video. ♥

San Francisco hasn't changed all that much. A few taller building now, but a lot of the old neighborhoods still look the same. Violent crime is much lower today, too.

Hi, Vintage Treasures Videos, thank you for the memories! Born in 1950, I lived my "American Graffiti" years. I remember the sock hops, the dresses, the uniforms... In those days of the nuclear family, we grew up with values and traditions reinforced by family(ies), neighbors, community, Boy/Girl Scouts/4-H youth groups, Church(es), schools, ... all the way up to the Media outlets (TV, magazines, radio, Wolfman Jack, Dick Clark, Alan Freed, ...) which were reinforcing traditional American family values. Despite having our own "hormone storms" as teenagers, most of us did respect girls and young women. I studied in NYC in the late sixties - that is the way it was. Thank you for bringing me back to a time of innocence, optimism and freedom (before the war, that is). May Peace be with you, Ciao, L (Veteran).

I was born when Harry Truman was president. For some reason, ever since I can recall, I was aware of the cars, the architecture, fashion, my surroundings, magazines, and public transportation, and eateries like Horn & Hardarts. I never drove, but was always asked to be 'shotgun' as I had a strong sense of direction. In late 60s and early 70s I hitch hiked across the US, parts of Canada and Mexico. Your channel means the world to me. Thanks.

husband speaking age 81.10 - WOW such good memories - I remember 10 cents shows on Sat. afternoon, Black and White movies, the News Real, a Bug Bunny
cartoon. Full service gas stations ( with my folks ) I started driving at age 17, and I think gas was 30 cents a gallon. Playing outside with the neighbor kids, no TV
cell phones or computers to mar the fun. The kids today I bet can't imagine living like we did and our older folks would love for our grandkids to enjoy our way of fun.
When it was believed that opening our doors to others was a good thing. You see where that got us.
