The rules are strict. The good news is that you can build a competitive car without selling your soul to pay for it. They are planning to add D gas and H gas cars that will be less expensive and still be a lot of fun. See the SEGA web site for rules.
It's heads up racing and they're only running 1/8 mile. The racing is close and most races are won or lost on the start. No automatic transmissions allowed so it's up to the skill of the driver to get the car to hook-up and make clean shifts. Look at some of the testing videos where they do show e.t. and speed. A-Gas cars are in the 125mph range.
Late 50s and early 60s didn't have electronic timers. A guy at end of track had a flag to signal right or left lane. Also had a flag man for takeoff. There weren't many big money sponsors and we built our own cars as we could afford and not many high performance parts so we used different parts that we could get to increase performance. It was a different time .

We had a thunder bolt It would eat chevy there are lots of junk out there still have the hood
