It's the amount of obnoxious Red Shells they like to spam at you!

the only way they would be truly impossible is if they had better “brains” (lines, shortcuts, item usage, etc.) but that sounds hard af to code
i was thinking about this too, i think one doable way to make them better at item usage at least would be getting them to all deliberately target the player with reds- if they're near enough to the player, then they try to follow/hone in on them to catch them with the revolving shells, and if they're ahead of the player with reds, backspam, etc. i was also thinking that hardcoding at least some of the major easy shortcuts like the grumble volcano respawn cut might not be too hard, especially since you don't really need items. if custom track creators can get cpus to follow their tracks, then it can't be too hard to get the cpus to follow those kinds of hard coded paths
Or just make the CPU’s neural networks so that they learn overtime and adapt to tracks to come up with the best theoretical lines after enough times playing.
So basically, race against AI that improve over time so it gets progressively more challenging

Man, it's been so long watching your channel (5 or 6 years now) and I randomly had the thought of how incredibly natural you are commentating. It is a genuine talent to be able to make a 40 minute offline video against cpus interesting and engaging. Just think there's no way you'll get the appreciation you deserve for that, so I thought I'd comment. Keep up the work bro

This is the most fun I’ve had watching someone race CPU’s. This also looks like what racing in MKWii felt like back in 2008.

Impossible mode: what's its like to be the CPU that always is in the back
You know it’s bad when bullet pulls are cast aside with a ‘meh’
If this is how mkwii would be originally, I don’t think many people would get this game and it wouldn’t become popular like today.
I've never been so excited at him beating CPUs.

I think that this True Impossibile CPUs Mode is really good, but I also think that it should have other characteristics:
-All CPU players use Bullet Bikes, Mach Bikes and Flame Runners only
-CPU players take better lines and can do shortcuts they wouldn't normally do (Single cut on DK Summit, Grumble Volcano respawn glitch, etc...)
-CPU players charge a stand-still mini turbo after they get hit by a shell and stop.
-CPU players take the bonus speed after falling of the track (which human players can do by pressing A on the controller as your vehicle touches the ground)
Next: Mario kart Wii but cpus learned how to do any shortcut
MK8 Hard CPUs are really easy to deal with because they don't rubber band. These modified for MKWii really keep you on your toes, and it's pretty entertaining to watch
Oh, that wacky King Boo. Does well the first half, throws it all away in the middle, and picks it up again at the end when it is too late to do anything about it.
I wish I didn't relate to that so well...

Grumble volcano was great. Lap 2 reminded me of the infinite blue shell mod just with both red and blue shells. You were still able to come back and win the race.

Also: This mod is pretty insane and very cool! The absurdly fast CPUs, the onslaught of blue and red shells... Very fun to watch for the entire time, probably absolutely gruesome to play at times! So yes, please do the retros as well!

I'm pretty sure it's not pull any item in any spot. It's more like:
Red Shell: 70%
Blue Shell: 20%
Power Items: 5%
Shock, Blooper, POW, Thundercloud: 0%
Other: 5%
The CPUS look intensely brutal when I saw Troy puts his video title IMPOSSIBLE MODE!!!! Lmmfao now that was a throwback mode right there folks 😂😂😂

I think there are so many reds because the CPUs are allowed to pull triple reds unlike normal where it's impossible. There was probably a reason Nintendo implemented that restriction lol.

This was such a great and nerve wracking video to watch. The most fun and challenging CPU mode to watch and (i'm assuming) play!

The last lap of Grumble Volcano was basically the Mario Kart equivalent of my final two semesters in college.
That constant warning noise at the end of grumble volcano gave me anxiety.
This would make an interesting Flounderfest episode. Maybe spice it up with some item rain too.

I was so used to online that:
-I thougt that bumping the CPUs didn't make them fall on their screens
-Red shells lagged
-10 and 11th place was last place due to disconnections
-Mega ThunderClouds were a thing
-Player lag affected the CPUs
