@@royventura2650 The song asks you to consider the thought that God could just be anyone that we see in everyday life, not some shining being that signals it's presence - hence asking what his name would be as he would not ''obviously'' be God to onlookers. If God was among us, but we didn't know who he was, then how would you treat him, or talk to him ? You wouldn't treat him as God, because he gives no clue to this, but you should treat everyone equally so in theory you would treat God no better or worse than any other being if you are a good and fair person. This is an interesting premise and is far from mocking or blaming God but seeks to put a human slant on the possibilities. I am an atheist, but have no axe to grind with believers and I find this song strangely beguiling and comforting in it's childlike questioning. Organised religion sometime seems to take the simplicity and vulnerability away from the masses and leaves them with a corporate manifesto. Maybe it is time to get back to the basics ? LYRICS: If God had a name what would it be? And would you call it to his face? If you were faced with Him in all His glory What would you ask if you had just one question? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? If God had a face what would it look like? And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints And all the prophets? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? Just tryin' to make his way home Back up to heaven all alone Nobody callin' on the phone 'Cept for the Pope, maybe in Rome And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? Just tryin' to make his way home Like a holy rolling stone? Back up to heaven all alone Just tryin' to make his way home Nobody callin' on the phone 'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
Yes, I agree, and not to b redundant (if you already heard me say this), but when the song came out, the Catholic Church got their golden feathers in a tizzy, as they did not get the meaning behind the song. They felt offended for Jesus, as the words said, "What if God was one of us, just a slob like one of us, just a stranger on the bus tryin' to make his way home....." Of course, Joan (or whoever) didn't mean God was a slob. It meant the biggest belief in Catholism is to "love one another " as He loves us, slob or not. And what would we do if our Holy Father WAS a slob would we turn away from him or when we pass a homeless person on the subway, looking like a real slob, do we pass him by and deem him not deserving of a couple coins?
As an atheist, I still like that song. Personal differentiation may not exist. Space/Time is a persistent illusion as is, likely, free will. So what are we, slobs on the bus?

One of my favourite songs of the 90s. Just rediscovered it and introduced myself to more songs of Joans
Sigue tan hermosa como el día que la vi por TV cuando yo era tan solo un niño, hace unos 25 años atrás aproximadamente
She sounds better than ever. So underrated. You can search back through some of her performances the past few years..... just awesome.
No, she sounds horrible.
May I ask
Is this song about mocking or blaming God about?
Thanks for replying
I'm curious on the lyrics

Studio version is a masterpiece. Even if she didn't write it.
And what's the need to say she didn't write it. I thought she did, and Alaniss copied two year's later. Who CARES WHO WROTE IT.

You have no soul.
She’s adding expression to a song she has sang a million times. She’s a lot older as well. He voice is deeper now.
This is terrible. She's got no voice left and have extremely bad timing. Ouch
What wisdom.
