      They’re definitely all great books! I personally prefer the complexities of the bigger cast of characters of the main series, especially the earlier books, but you can’t go wrong with AKOTSK either way!

    on a first read through, I think I liked ASOS the most, but on a second read, I think AFfC is my favorite. It is the most expansive, imo, and it opens the world up in a way that really fleshes it out and makes it come alive. I can understand the criticisms for it, that it doesn't include some of the favorite characters, and introduces a ton of new POV chapters, and some people even seem to think it's the worst of them, but I would give that to ACoK, purely because the Sansa chapters were so hard to get through for me personally. I don't think any of them are particularly bad, but AFfC just does so much heavy lifting when it comes to world building and characterization. Just a personal preference, I could see arguments for and against AFfC. ADwD was a bit anti-climactic, but a solid follow-up.
    I read the first in the series when I was like 13 years old, when it was still in that shit blue cover, and I got it at a scholastic book fair. I wouldn't come back to the series until after seeing the first season of the show. It was priceless to watch the Red Wedding with my brother, whose favorite character was Robb Stark, and seeing him react in real time not knowing what was coming…priceless.
    The Myreen plot seems to be GRRM doing his literary version of Vietnam? I dunno, I enjoyed ADwD but I think it could be the worse, excepting the Sansa chapters in ACoK. I really enjoyed the Cersei chapters in AFfC, as she gradually gets more and more insane … she is not nice to her handmaidens. And by not nice, I mean she very much abuses them, in every sense of the word.
    5) ADwD
    4) ACoK
    3) AGoT
    2) ASoS
    -- would put Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in here somewhere. I really love the Dunc and Egg stories. Tight, focused, really fun. The trial by combat at the end of the first Dunc and Egg (?) with the Laughing Storm is just mwah, chef's kiss.
    1) AFfC - just my opinion people, put down the pitchforks! XD

      I appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughtful take on why you prefer some books over the others! In curious what about Sansa in ACOK is not your cup of tea though? Is it her personality or just that she doesn’t have much sway in Kings Landing?

    Storm of swords is my number one as well and a feast for crows is probably my least favorite in the a song of ice and fire series. I’d also say the a knight of the seven kingdoms I love it’s very touching and lighthearted in comparison. If you haven’t read the companion book the world of ice and fire it’s worth it, yes fire and blood slightly changed a couple things but there’s other information that connects to the main series and places mentioned. Also if you haven’t read Robin Hobbs the farseer trilogy i wonder your opinions on that and if you can see some inspiration for Jon snows character and ghost and that series character fitzchivalry.

    • @booktubeadvocate
      @booktubeadvocate  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’ll have to check out the Farseer trilogy as I’ve heard great things about it. I’m still hesitant about TWOIAF. I know there’s lore changes with what happened in Fire & Blood but does the book also expand on events that happen after Fire & Blood?

    • @kaylat060889
      @kaylat060889 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@booktubeadvocate Yes for sure, I think you may enjoy it. As for TWOIAF new editions have corrected some things. However, it’s worth noting that most errors for the book I believe are printing errors or possibly can go into the unreliable narrator trope. The things that link to fire and blood go into his novellas before fire and blood was written. I also think it’s interesting to see the changes and speculate why some things were changed. However, yes it does expand on some things after fire and blood.

    You and I clearly have EXTREMELY different preferences as Dance is in my top three, while Thrones is in my bottom two. I think it comes down to the fact that you seem to prefer extremely concise and well-plotted narratives, whereas I place a much higher value on richness of world and characters.
    Thrones is very tightly-plotted, but it's also clear that you cannot have the richness of later books because of that and it's also clear to me that George did not fully understand his world or characters yet at this point. And that comes through and that means Thrones leaves me, honestly, a little bit cold compared to the rest. I enjoy it, but when I choose to reread specific things I almost never go back to it.
    Dance, on the other hand, definitely suffers from some meandering and some bloating. It is not as well-paced or tightly plotted. But it is an extremely rich story with a deep sense of character, history and the world. The writing for each POV is very distinct and extremely lively as well. And I do enjoy the politics too.
    This also makes it unsurprising that despite our very different preferences, Storm is the favourite of both of us. As Storm is almost as tightly plotted as "A Game of Thrones" but adds a richness and depth that is almost as good as "Dance." So it pleases us both.

    I think fire and blood gets a bad wrap because it's so different than the rest. Yes, it's a history retelling, but it doesn't feel dry. Or rather, it's a calm and more linear read compared to the complex POV style you get from the rest.

    I'm at number 6 right now, but before I watch any further I'm just going to give my own ranking.
    7. A Clash of Kings
    6. A Game of Thrones
    5. Fire & Blood
    4. A Feast for Crows
    3. A Dance with Dragons
    2. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
    1. A Storm of Swords
    I will say, about "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" it's probably the read I enjoyed most, even more than Storm. However, it does also lack the depth and richness of the main series, especially Storm, so for that I give Storm the victory.
    It is true that Dance can be a little bit meandering, same for Feast, but I actually don't mind that as much as many others seem to. I like the characters actually ruling, I mean that's theoretically what the series is about, after all. And I like the richness of Dance especially, where we see so much of this wonderful world. Dance just has a richness to it that I think is great, even if the pacing could be improved.
    I liked Clash and Thrones, but I have to say they're definitely the books that speak to me least. Basically the only thing I found truly memorable about Clash was the Blackwater and Tyrion's chapters. Everything else kind of fades into the background for me. And with Thrones it's so obvious to me that George didn't yet fully understand his world and his characters. A Tyrion chapter in Thrones and a Ned chapter in Thrones don't sound that different, but a Tyrion chapter in Dance and a Daenerys chapter in Dance sound just radically different. The world is also clearly so much richer later on, as is the character work and the story telling which are both extremely spartan and pragmatic in the first book.
    I tend to prefer rich narratives over tightly plotted ones, even though I prefer a bit of both. Which is also why Storm is my favourite. It manages to combine almost the same richness as Dance, and almost the same tightness of plotting and pacing as Thrones.
