When I was 12 in 1968 my parents gave me the Cox Jim Hall Chapparal for my birthday. I have many fond memories of my dad and I running that car on a circular tether. The Chapparal had no pull starter rope. You had to spin the back wheels by hand to start it. I smelled like the gas car fuel all summer long. I miss those days, and my parents!
I know exactly how that feels! I remember when I was a kid behind the toysrus they had a dumpster I used to do the same thing and find all sorts of cool stuff too!! Thanks for watching.
I had a couple ,my friend was lucky and had the purple one,he also had the three wheeled chopper, and I also had a vaga funny car that ran on the string when it hit the end of the string the car hit a bead and the car released a parachute, ,the stuka plane was also in my collection, damn parents sold, gave them all away at a rummage sale, I was so ticked off,,you just can't find that stuff any more unless you pay through the nose, what a shame ,but thanks for the video, brought back some of the few good memories as a child
Beautiful Cox dune buggy, i had the Cox Shrike propeller powered car back in the 60s. i remember it was fast but took longer to gain full speed than the Cox cars with gears.
They never made a cooler boys toy than the COX 0.49s ⛽⚡🔥💨 🙉 🚗🚤✈🚙🇺🇸 🏃💨 there needs to be a big documentary and revival of all the styles and vehicles they made. Ill never forget the smell of the glow fuel. And the noise! The whole neighborhood knew when someone was running one. 🙉 I recall a couple electric cars COX made right before they shut down. I have a few 0.49s that look super cool on a shelf. If I could find a glow plug they'd run. And BTY my first car was a yellow dune buggy. Pedal power, circa 1970. I was 4 and loved it. Even when my brother pushed me 50 MPH. WHHEEEEEEEEE!!! I had to put my feet on the hood cause the pedals spun like the front of a snowblower! The Meyers Manx & VW Beetle. & COX Loved them all.
@@ShenRC A radio controlled COX 0.49 powered buggy would be Awsome. I always wondered how well it could be throttled. Othewise a belt tensioner type drive could stop & go.
Found two of these on the curb a few weeks ago. The people had a yard sale and getting ready to move. They put a lot of cool old stuff at the curb. Surprisingly one of the buggies is 100% complete and I don’t believe it ever saw fuel. They also tossed a dragster that needs to be restored but the body is not broken and everything is here. Fun toys from a great time to be a kid. Sad that video games and cellphones is pretty much the largest choice of entertainment for so many ..too many kids
That takes me back. Talked my dad into a few of them. The first i put tires of my tonka dump truck and it killed the motor quick. Never read about the tether part. I just let er go.
personally Ithink that that dune buggy was the sexiest 0.49 car cox ever made - ingenious and reliable - I put a 2 channel Futaba rc on mine then . Remember the Ford Pinto and the Vega too
I remember that piece of crap when I was growing up. I don't remember any tether though, just free running, slowly. Tires flatten if you set it on them. Body nice.
Still have mine, the pink/grape version... can't remember how many times I had to change that metal starting strap... starting that engine was a nightmare 😁😁
Lol! everyone has a story to tell about these cox cars when they where little! My brother started one in our living room on the rug when everyone was sleeping my father was pissed at him that day!
I crashed a stuka on its first flight to. I ran the engine several times. It was cool on a shelf. Should of left it there. The bomb drop thing looked fun so I flew it. I made 1 lap hitting the ground repeatedly so I pulled up high and dove almost straight down obliterating the plane and never tried the bomb.
How about actually cranking it up and running it? I had numerous examples back in the late 60's, the recoil was usually the first to go bust. That, and all the other Cox toys were of a quality the likes that you won't find now. I've still a few examples 50 years later!
You probably will have to clean up the engine if it's all sticky and hard to turn over and get some new parts like glow heads if they are bad or fuel line and the accessories to get it started.. keep in mind these are super slow like 5mph or slower so don't expect a speed demon. 😁
thank again... battery is a much better and clean... cox fuel-nitro is a too much greasey messy / noise / smoggy smoking... where to get the R/C buggy car from
I had the red one in the early 70s. A trick my father showed me was to flip it over when you stored it to keep the tires from going flat.
Cool! I put something under the chassis to hold the tires up off the ground.

I had one of those as a kid and wish I still had it. It was a cool little car. I liked the sponginess of the tires too.
yea there cool. Tires where like air filled.
looks brand new!
Growing up in Santa Ana I had the privilege of dumpster diving and Cox hobbies dumpster. We used to score tons a good stuff back in the day
I know exactly how that feels! I remember when I was a kid behind the toysrus they had a dumpster I used to do the same thing and find all sorts of cool stuff too!! Thanks for watching.
I had the orange buggy as a kid very cool so clean I'm not upset you didn't run it! Nice!
👍Cool! they don't make anything like these old toys anymore! Thanks for watching I have many more cox videos.

Awesome story!! They don't make stuff like this anymore!! Thanks
I wanted one of those so bad as a kid. They seemed so cool, before R/C was commonplace.
Yea , they are still cool they don't make stuff like this anymore these days. Thanks for watching I have many more cox car videos also.
Like new condition. Just a missing taillight. Brings back some memories. They were all purple around here.
