Windlass Musketeer Rapier Review: An Inexpensive Rapier That Can Cut?

  • Inspired by some impressive rapier cutting videos by Monstrous Monk AKA Aikidoka, I took a chance on this as a rapier that might be capable of doing some cutting. And yes, it is, right out of the box. Also, I have to admit my fondness for the old Three and Four Musketeers films influenced my decision. Bonus, there's a matching Main Gauche that I'll post a review of soon.

    I started in the 80's, and most people thought I was a wee daft. Now in 2022, I'm amazed at how so many people are into swordsmansship. Nice to see like minded people. Personally I don't force the blade to adapt to me, I adapt to the blade. For me that's half the fun. Keep the videos coming sir, I enjoy listening to your point of view. Slan Go Foil. ☘

    Always wanted their Brandenburg one. I was super into the crappy Disney three musketeers as a kid. Definitely gotta add a rapier to my collection eventually. Was helpful to hear your opinion on this one. Really interesting cross section/geometry on that blade.

      Medieval Review wasn't as impressed with the Brandenburg, vastly preferring the Christus Imperat. I just got the Christus, and it's nice, but floppier and not as good a cutter as the Musketeer. I'll get that review out soon.

    Hello, I was just wondering if you ever removed the ricasso piece that rattled in the rapier and if was easy to reassemble. loved the video thank you :)

      I did. Used it for a while without. Then hammered the piece and filled it to fit tighter. It screws apart pretty easily (perhaps too easily).

      Definitely check out the Hanwei Torino and the Kingston Arms, similar price range, better blades, friendlier guards, much lighter in hand.

    Use a belt grinder that will put an edge on anything but only the true side and four inches on the false edge

    I'm considering this piece, because I love the design, but that flexion being closer to the tip and not evenly distributed across the entire blade is a bit of a red flag. I say so, not as some kind of savant, but following what I've read in Angelo et. al.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Between the issues I've had with the guard and the flex in the blade, I've actually been using the Christus more frequently lately. It does make an awesome pair with the matching Main Gauche though.

    • @brandonwells1175
      @brandonwells1175 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Angelo says, "The temper of the blade is to be tried by bending it against any thing, and it is a bad sign when the bending begins at the point; a good blade will generally form a half-circle, to within a foot of the shell, and spring straight again; if it should remain in any degree bent, it is a sign the temper of that blade is too soft: but though it is a fault, these blades seldom break. Those which are stubborn in the bending are badly tempered, often break, and very easily."

    Would you recommend the Cold Steel Hand and a half sword/Italian longsword OR the United Cutlery "Broadsword"?

    How does the musketeer compare to cavalier rapier in terms of fit, stiffness, and durablity
    Thanks

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Cavalier is quite stiff, much lighter and very well balanced. I love using it. Excellent thrusting sword, but no cutting ability. The Musketeer is heavier, more flexible, less comfortable with those square corners on the crossguard, but cuts surprisingly well. It's also a few inches longer. I use the Musketeer and Christus about equally as "heavy" training tools. The Cavalier in comparison is almost halfway to a smallsword.

  • @-Bile-
    @-Bile- ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's really nice, but the hilt is so big I have to imagine it feels awkward in the hand, all that extra room would make it feel very insecure imo.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've found it handles better using 2 fingers above the cross. I'd love it if the grip wasn't so thin to give me more control. I'd get around to doing a follow up.

  • @raphlvlogs271
    @raphlvlogs271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    why did it had 3 narrow fullers instead of 1 wide 1?

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As functional fullers serve to lighten a blade, and these are only a few inches long, pretty shallow and don't go up the blade, I'm guessing they're purely decorative.

  • @cashellerae3287

    How was in thrust as you said about flex did it do ok ? Great vid byway

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does pretty well (once I rounded those sharp spots on the cross so I didn't get bit). I've been test thrusting on several layers of corrugated cardboard and I have a "pell" that's basically a big sword box stuffed with stacked layers of thick paper from all the grocery bags I collected this past year. Not the stiffest blade, but it doesn't flex too much against that resisting target. I may do a comparison video.

  • @kevinmorrice
    @kevinmorrice 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    to me anything more than a 45 degree bend in the blade makes it a useless thruster and more a form practise or display piece, i like to practise thrusts into bottles and other things, so a floppy blade is useless, im so glad this has a sturdy enough blade to actually thrust with, as windlass doesnt have the best record of sturdy blades

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out my "Comparing Blade Flex in the Thrust" video to see how it compares against a stacked paper target.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely fine surgery, high risk and a major job. I've got the tools and the experience to reshape a through-hardened blade without killing the hardness, but I don't look forward to it.
