    Ok so here's my suggestions for the mosh pit to get more color. One remove the endler type males because they'll outcompete the fancy types to breed. Secondly the pure fancy strains i would keep the females pure strain & only collect the males offsprings and put them in mosh pit to breed with the mixed mutt females. This way you'll still have pure line & the added benefits of crossing them to the mutt females to satisfy your curiosity of the mixing genes. This way your mosh stock will keep more fancy form & color varieties.
    For the pure strain females once they're deliver. I'll put them with same Male counterparts to breed/ mate for 2 weeks then separate so the females can put energy towards growing/ incubating eggs/ fry than being stressed by hot Male..
    Hopefully this could help you or someone in future. Best of luck...👍👍👍👍

    Hey Stephen your channel rocks!! I don't often comment on videos but I need to on yours. Your videos have inspired me to start my own Mosh pit. It's also encouraged me to stop f*cking around with my tank so much and to let nature take its course. I can see results already. Your advice has saved me from hours of stress. The guppy rap was pure genius aswell. By the way is that a Jade plant clipping in the background floating around in the Mosh pit? Keep up the good work dude 👍👍👍

    I was under the impression that heavy culling for mutt tanks is essential if you at least want to maintain the color.
    Otherwise it reverts to wild phenotypes.
    This phenomenon can be seen in many types of fish.

    • @StephenP2003
      @StephenP2003  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they definitely will revert to wild phenotypes. I sort of sped up this process accidentally by introducing endler/guppy hybrids to the tank. I should have been culling them on first sight, but I let them go for a while. It's taken me a while to cull them all out, but now I'm on top of it! I really gotta do another update on this tank!

    • @StephenP2003
      @StephenP2003  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The great thing about guppies is that their appetites are endless, so they will search every crevice of the tank for anything to eat, whether it's uneaten food or bacteria cultures that form in algae and surfaces. That, plus the cherry shrimp and snails, makes for a pretty clean tank!

    • @StephenP2003
      @StephenP2003  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hydra was actually in the 10-gallon quarantine. The moshpit is actually a 40 breeder, my favorite tank size (at least for a 3ft or shorter tank)

    • @mirekt9521
      @mirekt9521 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes sense. I like 40b as well. My guppies are spread out in too many tanks and since they are all mutts, I am considering a pit of some kind as well. Probably won't sing about it though :)

  • @CrowntailHalfmoon

    Stephen becz the blue dragons are results from Asian blue crossed with red dragon so there's chance of getting reds. You'll need line breeding to ensure more blue dragons etc. Now since the females are contaminated with other strain sperm you'll need to keep that male with females for atleast 4 consecutive breedings before you can get some usable fry to continue forward to get more.. it's not guaranteed but if the Male is constantly with the female dragon especially when giving birth it potentially could improve your chances. I must mention that although the male impregnates the female she has ability to retain, discard or even mix sperm from her internal bank so broods could be sired from multiple fathers..

    • @StephenP2003
      @StephenP2003  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I know all the females are "contaminated" by the variety of males. I do know that if you just add in the males you want, they have the ability to override some of the retained sperm for the next drop, so that's the plan for sure. Of course, preserving "pure" strains is far from the goal here! 😆

    • @CrowntailHalfmoon
      @CrowntailHalfmoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StephenP2003
      Yes i understand but you mentioned that you want to try getting more blue dragons. From my experience depending on age of Male. Its usually by 4th consecutive spawn I'll select fry in hopes of getting offsprings from the chosen Male. Again females do control which breeding material for next brood so that's why I select from 4th onwards for breeding stock..

    The new additions look gorgeous! Might be worth doing occasional culling of adult males from the mosh pit. Pull the males you don't prefer, leaving more of the males you do prefer to breed with more of the females. 2-3 times a year should be enough to keep more of the diversity. 😊 That's how I manage my guppy colonies for diversity. I pull any males I don't want more of or I don't want as many of. Gives my preferred males more of a chance to breed with the females.

    • @StephenP2003
      @StephenP2003  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, that's what I've been doing lately. Unfortunately I waited way too long to start doing that, so it's been slow going to get rid of them all (I don't like to just discard/euthanize healthy fish, and I don't have much space for storing them, so I've been giving them away).

    • @ReneesZooTube
      @ReneesZooTube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StephenP2003 Maybe pull almost all the Endler type males out and put them in the tank you currently have the new guppies in, basically switching them out with the new guppies going into the mosh pit? Could be a temporary fix.

    • @StephenP2003
      @StephenP2003  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ReneesZooTube I'm getting ready to set up another 40 breeder for a plant farm, so I think problem will soon be solved!!

  • @CrowntailHalfmoon
    @CrowntailHalfmoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Beautiful guppies Sir..😍😍 The moss pit is amazing... unfortunately we try to tame & control nature/genetics but eventually without proper selective breeding they revert back to the wild varieties. It has happened to me & even Segrest farms. Now everyone has there own methods & yours is working best for you but if i could recommend something that would be able to give you more color variants. Now imo the first mistake was to quarantine both sexes together. Now the pure strains have been contaminated with different sperm packets becz lets face it these guppy males have only one thing on their agender. Especially for pure strains especially if the females have distinguishable features from each other i would quarantine females separately from males. This way they remain pure & breed true to strain. If females similar i do that species with males together. You could do 2 separate tanks or have them in marina breeder boxes separated from group or have males in box with females in larger tank area. This way you control breeding.
