The opening lines of this song are the home run calls of Jack Brickhouse (WGN TV), Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau (both WGN Radio) respectively. We were so lucky to have had such great enthusiastic announcers back then when the team was rarely as good as in 69. Lloyd Pettit worked TV with Jack and was the voice of the Blackhawks. You Chicagoans are sure lucky! The 1986 Bears Superbowl….the 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98 Bulls championships, the 2005 White Sox world series…(if you Cubbies fans consider that lucky..lol) and the 2010, 13 and 15 Stanley Cups! Not to mention the 2016 World Series that the Cubbies won to break the 108 year curse! I now feel bad for my dad, who is a Canucks/Bills/Mariners fan….born in 1970. Oh well, this song is absolutely amazing and constantly gets stuck in my head.
I'm a Brewers fans, but I'm old enough to remember this from when I listened to Cubs games before the Brewers moved to Milwaukee. This song and "It's a beautiful day for a ballgame," are very happy memories from my childhood, even though the Cubs broke my heart in 69.
When Milwaukee had no baseball team from 1966 to 1969, residents of that city had Chicago closest distance wise for one to pull for a major league team, be it the Cubs or the White Sox.

As a Cubs fan, and I guy who doesn’t believe the Curse of the Billy Goat was even something that affected the Cubs, I think you can blame the fall of the Cubs in 69 on then-manager, Leo Durocher. He overused and overworked his best players, and they grew tired by the near-end of the season, from what I've heard.
