Just found your channel. Junior development coach who has worked with half a dozen players who earned world ranking points. Your videos are the BEST I've ever found online. You analyze everything PERFECTLY. I would send my own children to you for coaching. Absolutely excellent!!
@@simon0yeung Someone coached Diane Parry not too long ago as a kid. It's more rare for sure, but it's still out there. Plus the OP was talking about the guys general coaching skills, not the one handed backhand specifically
Honestly probably the best video I have ever seen on the one hander. Very complete and you don’t waste any time. It seems a little long but it really isn’t. Because you have included exercises and how to train at home. I’m really excited to give this a try.
Thank you. I have been struggling all my life with my backhand and wanting desperately to improve until I saw this video. now I understand what I need to do , first indoors and hopefully transfer it to the court. Very grateful for this brilliant video instruction. Amazing !
Thank you so much!!! I have been struggling hitting one hand back hand,… I just don’t have enough time on the court to focus on it. Now I can do these drills at home. Appreciated.
Great analysis in the beginning from some of the best in the business! What makes this video superb is how the applied training drills/techniques target every aspect of the analysis of the OHBH in the beginning. Phenomenal work and execution. Can’t wait to start working on these drills!! Thank you!!
Great video! Yours is the first one I’ve watched to begin on loading the back foot. Most others start at turning your back to your opponent. I look forward to trying your drills. Thank you!
The second drill where you explain that the hips drive the shoulder and the shoulder drives the arm and the arm does NOT move independently into contact is excellent. Provides much more power and stability in the contact and shot.
Thank you very much for this video. This was super useful. I know you went out of your way to create the slomo and other graphics for the analysis. Thank you for that
I'm so amazed the way the forehand improving video worked on me. I did all the drills for 2 weeks and the results are PHENOMENAL. I'm sure the backhand drills are brilliant as well . Thank you so much for keeping us motivated, and for giving us the chance to have a proper technique. Your work is inspiring. Greetings from Ecuador!
Kevin, thank you for posting this video. I did the drills for the backhand for three days and I couldn’t believe the difference when I hit the court. I already watched the video for the forehand . Do you happen to have a similar video with home drills for serve? Thank you.
Guess what ... I was looking for a video like this and now it's available 🙂 ... You've been reading my mind? Thank you very much! I will train this to improve my one handed backhand.
I really like the clip of Thiem hitting at 8:14. This is a low backhand more representative of what most club players will experience. Take away 70% of the pace and move the ball into no mans land and it’s realistic. The hardest part is coordinating the footwork to position yourself properly and then have it the form you point out. Great video, it reset my backhand after watching, I slip back into chest facing forward and rotating my torso which produces a weak inconsistent ball.
These are great tips, and even though I am nowhere near what I want, I would suggest to everyone one more tip. Especially in backhand, pay attention to gravity and its effect on the incoming ball, and try to synchronize your timing (and your gravity) accordingly. This generally helps me with cleaner contacts in general.
Well done on other well-explained mechanics and execution of a one-handed backhand! Your work is a joy to watch and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your passion for the sport and your commitment to teaching others, cheers and the best of luck mate!!!
Merry Christmas to you and your family Kevin. Many thanks for your awesome instructions which are so valuable for me and no doubt so many players around the world. It makes the tennis journey so worth it with your guidance. Keep up the awesome work and hope to meet up one day.
These are amazing I’ve been developing costochondritis type sternum pain from all the body rotation etc so I’ve been looking for some exercises to do as well as improve technique. Just a suggestion for people at home get the oculus quest 2 with first person tennis and helloreal racket adapter.
I think the opening up the shoulder thing but keeping the chest sideways is where I have been messing up at. I was not opening that shoulder up causing me to hit the ball too far away from me making me arm the ball
I love the drills! Started at home and I can really feel the position I need to get into. Can you do a similar video for the forehand? I would love to practice at home with the rubber bands for the two shots in one session. Thanks Kevin!!
Your video is the single most helpful video on OHBH. Thank you for your insight. I tried your suggestions in VR tennis then IRL. It worked in both! Is there a VR tennis game you use or recommend for practice?
Very nice and interesting, as usual. Many thanks. Just a question: what about tightness of hand and wrist? Is it very low as in forehand it is? Thank you
Awesome drill. I also like to use a medicine ball to hone in on the footwork because it will very naturally demonstrate that you must load the hip first and then use the shoulders to get it started! More home drills please.
Interesting to note that the shoulder turn is a two piece action. There’s the initial unit turn and then a further turn that coincides with the racquet drop.
I use a single handed backhand and I love the tips on how these guys like Gasquet, Stan and Thiem all load their their hips--This is crucial! Now I have a request. I’d like to see a video on how to deal with the tennis ball where it jumps away when the back foot makes the touchdown to the ground.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you! BTW, what software program are you using to draw on. your tablet over the video clips? Thanks in advance for your reply.
This is what I need. I've been switching to a 1 hander, but my technique has been causing me to have back shoulder pain. I am ordering a cable so that I can practice the correct technique so that I don't feel pain after playing
Thanks, the mechanics are very similar. The power is going to come from loading the back leg and coiling. Then uncoiling with the legs and hips. Maybe I can make a video like this one for the 2 handed backhand.
Really nice tips, as usual. At the start, when you talk about digging into the ground and transferring power forward, isn’t that the same or similar to the classic advice that your body should be moving forward when contacting the ball? Assuming you had to do anything other than run fwd to get to the ball, you must have stopped by digging in with the back foot and drove forward. Tx!
Nice breakdown! Love your videos. However, I would drop the background music.....confusing. Sounds like I'm in a yoga class or sauna. But that's just me.
Coach Kevin, this is such an amazing and succinct physical training for the 1 hand backhand. Love it! Can you do same video on training the forehand? Or is the training similar to build up the forehand hip rotation?
It would also be useful if you can do same instructions for the body and hip power generation for home work out, not just for the one hander. Doesn't the same apply for the forehand and the two-handed backhand. Thanks
This is brilliant! Huge thanks to your videos and simplified explanations. I had few questions lingering for quite some time and you answered them. I do have one question though, just as Anthony has mentioned below. Once I have prepped and set my backhand (and planted my feet), if the ball deviates from the bounce, and worst if it deviates towards me, I struggle to make the clean contact. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Good job as world champions' trainor I agree. Of course it's only a small part of what can be done to get a great (best) shot (and still, shots are not all...) but I can't tell more about all the secrets of the game (only for my athletes)🦋 Keep doing you are good !
Just grab a frisbee and throw it back and forth with a partner. That's your single handed backhand. When you get on the court, keep it simple. Turn your back to the opponent, keep your knees bent and eyes on the ball, bring your racquet back and lower your racquet shoulder as if it's pointing at the ball, and then let it rip, as if you're throwing a frisbee. It's a simple stroke. It's mostly shoulder and some hip and legs. The arm and hand are there just to hold the racquet. By the way, the guy to model after is Stefan Edberg. I find Gasquet's and Federer's too wristy and Wawrinka uses too much muscle. Another guy to look at is Shapovalov.
Great analogy Jerry. I think all that's needed with the Frisbee example is the right grip on the racquet (some preference... But definitely enough guides out there for the vast majority of players)
@@bballah9969 It definitely is. If you don't get the feeling of throwing a frisbee when hitting your one handed backhand, you're not being efficient. Take a frisbee, stand sufficiently far back from your partner so as to require your body, not just your wrist, to throw it, and then throw it. That's the sensation you should feel when you're hitting your backhand with full force.
@@jerrycallows3906 This is totally wrong in so many ways. First of all when you hit a one hander the racquet head is higher than a grip level always! Don't believe me? Look at the best in the business hit a one hander Federer, Wawrinka, Gasquet, Hass, Robredo, Thiem, Tsitsipas, and tell me where there racquet head is positioned at the start of the stroke. When you throw a frisbee it's coming from an horizontal position not a vertical position like when you hit the one hander. Also who hits a one hander with an open stance like you explain? The stance is either sideways, or semi open stance. An open stance position is only used if you are rushed and can't get setup into position fast enough on the incoming shot and your jammed up. Once you said Federer's and Gasquet backhand is to wristy I said omg this is horrendous info your giving out and this is totally wrong! All touring pros do not wrist the ball to get spin on there shots. The wrist is a by product of the kinetic chain you wouldn't know anything about that cause you never played at a high level. Also Stefan Edberg has the old school backhand and forehand his strokes are not modern like the way it is in today's game.
@@bballah9969 Check out the frisbee throws here: th-cam.com/video/kXKAf4qYDHg/w-d-xo.html. Notice the similarities between these frisbee throws and the one handed backhand. If you can't, I don't know what else to tell you.
