This might be one of the most interesting and relevant dialogue I’ve seen in a long time. And it comes to mind Pinocchio’s Disney song… “when you wish upon a star” 👏👏👏

Is it man who assigns meaning, or is it something devine like the function of intuition that comes through us which is why there are universal symbols.

or a little bit of both :) meaning as an encounter :)

The object that receives the projection has to have similar qualities as the image which is being unconsciously projected. Points in space are also points in time. Jung here mentions importance of the quality of time which has meaning. Jung. p. 238 Alchemical Studies. According to Jung's theory of synchronicity, the hook for the projection can't just be any point in space, but it has to have meaning. Points in space are also time. "I am therefore using the general concept of synchronicity in the special sense of a coincidence of time of two or more casually unrelated events which have the same or a similar meaning." Jung. p. 441 Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche. According to Jung, we must access the psyche through images and of course they have meaning or ideas, archetypes. Images and ideas are not the whole of the archetype which is unknowable and transcendent. Jung wrote we view everything through the psyche which includes physical cosmology as well as psychological or archetypal cosmology. Its all part of that one world or unus mundus, the self archetype which it outside time but breaks through into space time in the instant moment. Jung is the only one who has come up with the theory of synchronicity which is not just the ancient idea of correspondence, harmony and sympathy. "Synchronicity is a differentiation of the obsolete concept of correspondence, harmony and sympathy. It is based not on philosophical assumptions, but empirical experience and experimentation." P. 531. ibid. I agree. It is also based on modern psychological principles discovered and theorized only recently in the 20th century by Jung.: Jung's theory of unconscious projection which was not yet understood or studied in antiquity. We can clearly see that Jung's theory of synchronicity is a psychological first principle and a physical principle only that there were always synchronicities as long as there were planets in our universe which is a lot older than our solar system. Synchronicity is every bit a first principles as Einstein's General relativity which is why Jung included space time in his cosmology quaternio on p. 514. ibid in his paper on synchronicity.

Excuse me for leaving out one word from Jung's paper on synchronicity. My comment was supposed to say: synchronicity is a "modern" differentiation of the obsolete concept of correspondence, harmony and sympathy etc.

Yes. Jung explicitly writes that he draws on such ancient notions for his concept of synchronicity. However, synchronicity is a secular understanding of them.

It is true astrology is sacred, but a physicist would think the same idea about synchronicity which uses the meaning of the moment of space time. Synchronicity uses the unconscious or unconscious projection so that we can say that it is completely non local on the large scales. Synchronicity in order to work in a physical way would have to use instantaneous action at a distance in which is an idea the is completely banished from physics by general relativity where there is not any non locality on the large scales. Non locality is only possible on the small scales as in quantum field theory. Jung's dinner conversations with Albert Einstein first got Jung interested in the relativity of space and time and their psychic conditionality. Jung 1953. Jung included space time and general relativity in his map of the psyche or psychological cosmology in his paper on synchronicity You could call it archetypal cosmology which has the same meaning, the self self archetype. My point was Jung, pronounced with a long U like yooong did include the physical in his worldview and paper on synchronicity is still ahead of today's general level of the collective consciousness. Consequently, synchronicity would include the sacred and the secular.

The point I am making here is that some people think Jung's idea of synchronicity was obsolete and today;'s eclectic combination of psychological approaches combined with astrology is updating Jung. I'm all for progress and mental inventiveness, but can anyone do that with Einstein's general relativity. I don't think so. This is important because we can't hyjack Jung's idea of synchronicity. He came up with it and not anyone else. The same is true about special and general relativity. Minkowski came up with a similar idea, but the math of general relativity was formulated by Einstein. Marcel Grossman showed Einstein how to do the type of geometry needed, but the calculations were all Albert Einstein. Like Jung he got ideas by looking at other peoples ideas, but one has to make the theory. Jung will get credit for synchronicity which is every bit a first principle, but of the psyche. It explains how all paranormal and parapsychological effects including precognition.
